I have a 82 chevy fullsize. The motor in it is out of a 77 impala. Its a 305 with a 2 barrel. When I got it it had been sitting for a while it ran really bad, sometimes not at all. I could drive it but only if I only gave it a little throttle. I rebuilt the carb. This is the first car carb I rebuilt. I have rebuilt many bike carbs. Now it idles well. when I give it gas in park it rev's good. when I put it in gear it stays running but when i give it gas it sputers then stalls, sometimes it back fires out the carb. I don't know if the accelerator pump is set right. Its close I know. I'm gonna check the timing tommarrow. I also don't know if all the vacum lines are hooked up in the right spot either. I think they are right but not shure. Any ideas as to what the problem might be.

I have the same motor setup, just out of a 78, in my Impala. Mine does something similar when its cold (have to feather or ease into any throttle, mashing it will stall it), once it's up to temp it's alright. I'm personally going to TBI, i'm tired of fucking with carbs.

same crap on my 73 400 with the 2bbl. was fine the last few years but this year it has been a real dick. you cant even drive it till its warmed up.
i dont think its the carb, i had it rebuilt. unless the choke or floats are out of adjustment

Well check this out. I have the timming close maybe a little over advanced. It idles, rev's good in park. If I put it in gear and I am real real real easy with the throttle, it will accelerate. Once I get the rpms up I can hit the gas hard, not full throttle but hard. If I don anything else anywhere in the process it cuts out, sometimes stalls, or goes POW!!! and backfires out the carb. I'm thinking maybee the accelerator pump is not working. I'm gonna take it apart and put the old accelerator pump back in. I'm also gonna check and see if the bowl vent is clear. I'f that doesn't work I just may shoot it. Any ideas would be helpfull.

sounds like accel pump to me too.
check make sure choke is working properly and the butterfly is opening all the way.
Two barrels are a great carb to use. Typically, they just run....

I've rebuilt mine twice in the past 2 years plus I had the throttle re-bushed on the first rebuild. I only did it the second time because after a year all the screws had vibrated loose (note to self: use locktite). My jetting is probably a little off because I am using different manifolds and cam than what came stock on the original 305, but aside from that I don't know. I personally think it's that stupid choke system (the one with the 2 tubes that run into the intake). All I know is come spring, she's going TBI.

Well it was the accelerator pump. Not really the pump it's self but the line that runs from the pump to the air horn. It was clogged. Apparently it didn't get cleaned good enough. So apparently I was thinking to hard about what was wrong. On my choke set up I have a rich/ lean adjustment. I found it real handy for tunning for these cold ohio mornings. It was 15f when i left for work. Anyways problem solved thanks for all advice. I think I'm switching to efi next summer any ways.
