: need some help with my chevy convertion
grant89chevy 12-12-2007, 08:20 PM i have a 89 chevy half ton 4x4 and im looking to do a straght axle convertion. i know that i can do this with a ford dana 44. but what i am intrested in doing is to change out the transfer case so that it dumps out the passenger side and i can run a chevy front axle with the pumpcin on the passenger side. so can this be done. and be easy im new at this
mudslinger65 12-12-2007, 08:59 PM yep it can be done and its easy
Donahue 12-12-2007, 09:21 PM its just like you say, get a t-case from a straight axle truck (208 or 241). you will most likely have to do some exhaust work.
solidk1500 12-12-2007, 09:48 PM all you will have to do is change over the linkage, we used a np208 in a truck with a standard chevy diff. puts the shifter over on the left side on the trans tunnel. Not that big of a deal. just puts the shifter farther from your reach. i have no trouble with exhaust at all. I have done tow of these trucks. prefer the ford diffs, less hassle...
grant89chevy 12-12-2007, 10:36 PM thanks for the info. the reason that i am looking in to changing out t case is that from what i have been told is that the one that is in my truck will limit the travel that i can have is this true? and its not very easy to find a ford high pinion dana 44
Donahue 12-12-2007, 11:33 PM thanks for the info. the reason that i am looking in to changing out t case is that from what i have been told is that the one that is in my truck will limit the travel that i can have is this true? and its not very easy to find a ford high pinion dana 44
first off, that statement is bogus. the only thing i can think of is since the pinion is higher on a hp axle, it could potentially have more clearance issues, but generally this is not true. as for the ford axles, they are dime a dozen in my area, at least the 1/2t ones. i would guess you want leafs in the front, and therefore are probably looking for an 79-79 f250 axle?
solidk1500 12-13-2007, 07:25 AM well you have a np241 one of the better chain driven transfer cases (IMO). I scored my high pinion housing for like $50.00. Just keep looking. As for limiting flex hell no...i have had my truck on top of a 3 1/2 ramp with all four tires still on the ground. truck performs flawlessly everytime and was the best thing i could have done was keeping it stock transfer case. If you swap t cases, plan on making a new crossmember to to clear the front driveshaft. Good luck if you need any info PM ill be glad to help you out!! :mr-t:
KWTMECH 12-13-2007, 09:13 AM It is not the transfercase that limits the driveline flex, it was the driveshaft itself that was used with the ifs suspension. The EASIEST way would be to locate a ford axle assy.
solidk1500 12-13-2007, 09:18 AM yea you definitely need to run a double cardan style driveshaft. That is for sure!!!:D
grant89chevy 12-13-2007, 10:21 PM i just dont know what way i should go yet. so far all of every one i have talk to that might be able to find one is saying that its going to cost 1,500 to 2,000 for the ford dana 44. and for that price i know i could buy a chevy axle t-case and some new tire. but then again i have never seen this convertion done with the chevy axle ethier so what do you guys think the right way would be ???
Grumpy_old_fart 12-13-2007, 10:50 PM 1500 would get you a dana 60hp front. sheesh
i had 2 hp dana 44s given to me. GIVEN... as in FAWKIN FREE!
look for a 77 model axle, with the thick tubes, welded on radius arm mounts, which you can remove to install leaf mounts if you MUST have leafs on the front. i like the coils for flex, and freedom to build.
Donahue 12-14-2007, 12:19 AM agreed, i paid $100 for my ford 44. the people you are talking to dont know shit. but when you buy a ford 44, buy two and sell one to them. then you can do your sas for free!
greengrass 12-14-2007, 12:39 PM grant if you don't mind driving 2 hours north I could probably get you one for anywhere from free to 75 bucks... I wouldn't even pay 1500-2000 for a SET of 1 ton axles.
grant89chevy 12-14-2007, 01:24 PM if you could do that i would pay you 100. buck on top of what it costs. and i have made that drive million times. i just bought my camper from a couple in templeton
bggrnchvy 12-14-2007, 04:26 PM Unless you modify your tranny x-member for a dropped t-case output, you're resigned to having the t-case clocked up into the frame rails (not a bad place to be really). The issue is when you combine that plus a low pinion front axle and lots of lift.
I've got a Chevy p-drop 241 clocked up with a chevy 60 up front and with about 8"s of lift and 8"s of droop travel and I get within a couple degree's of binding a clearanced 1350CV. I built a wrap bar to for the front to control wrap and pinion angle as a result to keep from hurting it. I blew up 2 1310/1330 CV's and cracked a t-case from binding the driveshaft under torque previous to that, the driveshafts spun freely at droop without power however.
grant89chevy 12-14-2007, 10:22 PM ok well now that i have been looking around the web site. i think maybe i might be looking for the wrong axle. i plan on running 37-40 in tires. will the dana 44 hold up
Grumpy_old_fart 12-14-2007, 10:26 PM now you ask...
wasnt there a thread over in newbie about this?
oh, yeah, there was.. its still up on the front page:
http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=583570
greengrass 12-15-2007, 12:18 AM let me look around, they are pretty common, I have a ford front dana 60 or front dana 44 but they are the shitty closed knuckles drum break ones. you can have either one if you want..... but I will look around for a ford hp d44
chevy05 12-15-2007, 04:47 PM Don't mean to steal the thread put are there any bolt up passenger side t-case that bolts up to a NV3500 in a 92 1500 4x4???
