I thought Id share a cheap trick for the guys building there own axles. If you are removing the rossette welds on your axle dont be fooled or frustrated all you need is a masonary drill bit , it will drill through that quick where high dollar drill bits want start cause the carbide tipped. <IMG SRC="smilies/roxy.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/roxy.gif" border="0">

I am pretty sure most everyone torches them out but if you don't own a torch and do own a drill you'll be in business.

Thinking about it some more... have you actually USED this trick??

Masonary bits are designed for masonary, while the may be carbide tipped, there design in not inclusive to steel. Ever hit a piece or rebar??? Same thing.

just wondering if you have done it this way, or are just thinking out loud.

what techguru posted is correct..... the only problem is that you have to sharpen the masonry bits ( using a silicon carbide grinding wheel.... Green ...) the way they come out of the package they are wayyyy too dull to even make an attempt....... once they are sharp though, they make a fairly good altenative to mucho expensive solid micrograin carbide drill bits ..... as long as you're not too concerned about producing a hole to a specific size........

Why not just aneall the weld before you try to drill it. Just take a torch with a rose bud tip and heat up the weld to cherry red, hold it at that heat for a while and then over a minute or two gradually back the torch off. After that you'll be able to use any drill to take the weld out.

I've done this a lot on cast pieces that I had to weld up and redrill holes on (repairing threads, moving bolt patterns...)
