: Racheting sound in tranny (ax-15)
CG94YJ 06-27-2002, 10:59 AM Been going on for a couple of months now, and now that everything else is fixed, turned to this problem.
Basically it happens when coasting. Clutch in or out, doesn't matter. So I'm assuming it is tranny.
Also, I can alter the sound when in neutral (clutch out) by applying pressure on the stick to the shift pattern, not a gear, but the sides if that makes sense.
Any ideas?
Jakesteramalamajama 06-27-2002, 11:48 AM Input bearing?
TexasBlake 06-27-2002, 11:54 AM Hey, i get that too. I get it when I lift up on the accelerator when I'm going 40+mph, and when I'm cruising it does it slightly. Only I have an auto in my YJ.
If you find out what it is, lemme know.
4Bangler 06-27-2002, 11:58 AM Uh, you got an extra AX-15 laying around? You may want to consider finding one. My AX-5 was doing that for about six months, I kept checking the fluid, but it was okay, I had chalked it up to my 5.38's spinning everything faster than norm, or ring an pinion noise on the coast side (5.38's are known for that) traveling up the driveshaft and sounding like the trans. Then it happened, I was crusing home on the highway, about 65 in fifth, when she started banging and clanging like nobody's bidnez. I thought I blew my new motor, but as soon as I put the clutch in it stopped. I figured that 5th blew out so I dropped to 4th and it was fine. When I got to town I found out that 4th was the only gear left (makes sense, it's straight through 1:1) Even with 5.38's and 33's taking off in 4th is tough, ended up taking off in 4th 4low, then shifting to 4hi. Anyway, the idler was all blowed to shiznit, so's I swapped in my SM420, it was cheaper to swap than to rebuild, even with my spare parts trans.
4Bangler 06-27-2002, 11:59 AM The auto trans problem sounds like rear-end or t-case noise.

Yeah, I think i damaged a shaft or a seal or somthing. When I did my stupid jump, my rear driveshaft came apart, but when I landed the driveshaft came together but not fully, so my axle pushed my driveshaft hard into the shaft because there was no slip. Kinda hard to explain what happened, but it's just one of those things to add to the never ending list of stuff to fix
$5 says input bearing. Have fun changing it!
cm "been there, done that" k
4Bangler 06-27-2002, 02:16 PM Does it do it at idle out of gear? Wouldn't a throwout bearing knock like that?
CG94YJ 06-27-2002, 09:46 PM Nope, doesn't do it at idle, only when rolling and at speeds of 35 or more (sometimes slower, but have to have been above 35 at some point).
I guess whatever it is, I'll be pulling the tranny soon. :(
CG94YJ 06-28-2002, 06:45 AM I thought throwout bearing initially, but would it be rattling with regardless of the position of the clutch (in/out)?
GaJeep94YJ 06-28-2002, 08:42 AM I am getting the same sound and I initially thought it was the throw out bearing. a friend rode with me who knows alittle more about trannies then I do and said it was the input bearing.
someone up above said good luck changing it, well can you expand on that a little. is it really that hard? I have never torn into a tranny but I don't mind doing it if I know it can be done by me.
anyone have any more info on how to change it?
4Bangler 06-28-2002, 08:50 AM I'm not sure on the AX-15, I'll have to go look at my old AX-5 to be sure, but on my SM420 it's just a matter of pulling the input bearing retainer and carefully pulling the bearing without pulling out the input shaft, if the input shaft come out, all the needle bearings drop into the bottom of the case. The AX trannies may have a caged bearing, or they may require a complete teardown. Reguardless most of the PITA is dropping and reinstalling the trans and t-case.

well if that is the only thing I can do this in 45 minutes. and that is with a bear break.
any one know from experince?
Drop the case.
Pull the tranny.
Split the tranny apart.
Remove the intermediate plate with all the shafts and such. If you don't know how to do this, get a FSM. There are some detent balls that need to be removed first.
Pull the input bearing from the input shaft (read: puller and/or press).
Press a new bearing on. The input bearing is a sealed ball bearing, not needles, not tapered roller bearing, etc.
Reassemble the tranny and fit it back in.
Like I said, have fun.
cm "that damn bearing ain't cheap either" k
Jakesteramalamajama 06-28-2002, 01:02 PM My buddy's 91 YJ 4.0/AX-15 was doing the same exact thing you describe. It was the input bearing. Bitch to get at and change. You'll be able to tell for sure when you get the tranny out as there will probably be play in the input shaft.
Like CMK said, have fun.
Jake
GaJeep94YJ 06-29-2002, 05:47 PM Great sounds like fun, assuming the stealership has the bearing I will do that this sunday.
Oh yea, Doh! I have the FSM on CD and abut 20 minutes after posting that it occured to me I should check the FSM. shows in pretty good detail how to do it.
but I like your description better.
I just hate working on trannies.
