I sure hope the SOB is hurtin pretty good after a hit like that.. cop figures it was 30-35mph.
I heard a BANG followed by tires squealing. First thought - someone hit my truck. Second thought - probably just fireworks.. and with the tire squeal, the vehicle would've been gone before I was back out of bed (I'd just come in from the shop..)

See the stain near the "AM" in the above pic? That's from my leaking power steering box.. which would indicate where the truck *WAS* parked before some asshole fawked it up.
I hope the cops manage to find this guy.. and that he actually has insurance, a job, or SOMETHING since it's still against the law to beat on someone until you feel you've gotten your money's worth.
FAWK.
I USED to own ONE NICE TRUCK..

Yep, it goes on.. I wasn't hurt.. but it sure does set back everything a good bit.
Took a few years to find a truck this nice.. perfect grille and front bumper, nary a dent or ding in the whole body.. it was my ONE nice looking rig.. the rest are a bunch of POSs.. but nooo, the Travelall didn't get hit.. the truck did. :(
I bought THIS truck because I didn't have to do any body work on it. Jokes on me..
It will have been "home" for exactly one year on Thursday - the 4th.
*sigh*

I hope ya get it goin soon
Thanks, Tim. Dunno how soon I'll get it back on the road.. I was really looking forward to "tinkering" and not "fixing/working".. getting the stereo installed before RMIHR was my priority.. swapping a perfectly good and rust-free front clip out was NOT in my plan.
On the positive side, I think there's enough good sheetmetal in the local boneyard to make a good front clip - but I'll have to paint the whole cab to make anything match now. Not sure about a good grille for it, or a good 74/75 hood in the yard, but I've made a note of a few good fenders n' such on my trips for parts.
If I stay home and skip RMIHR, I'll have the $$ to put it back together..
shrug.

I was working on my trailer last week in the driveway, and thought I heard someone throwing rocks at me and the truck.. I was going to go to bed early that night, instead found myself sitting with my gun and all the lights off crouched down next to the truck (in the driveway, where it should've been last night, too..) waiting to see if someone was gonna try it again.. :)
JoshC 06-27-2002, 12:44 PM Wow, sorry to hear that Tom. Did he/she leave any paint? I'd spend the day driving around looking for a fawked up car/truck.
Looks like the damage would be on the driver side of the vehicle and if you had some paint, you could hunt down that color.
Also, I'd take a trip to the nearest bar this evening and just have a beer or two and keep my ears open. It happened on a weeknight. The dude probably was drunk to swerve that far over to the left. If it's a weeknight, it's a habbit, and he'll probably be back at the bar tonight. And he'll probably have a story to tell after he throws back a few.

Yeah, but of all of 'em, the T'all is the one slated for sale or parting out.. downside is it's the one that runs and has been the most reliable.. just the ugliest one, and Michelle despises it. :D
I wasn't too happy when I had it up on the RTI ramp and went to climb back in and jumped up into the driver's seat only to fall through the floor, either.. even if it was kinda funny.

BTW, club member is selling me a running 345 to put in my T-all. I'll work on getting it home after Roundup...

Wow, sorry to hear that Tom. Did he/she leave any paint? I'd spend the day driving around looking for a fawked up car/truck.
I cruised the trailer park across the street (in the direction the vehicle was headed) before the cops even showed up - I had to get walking and moving and DOING.. it's been a long time since I was so pissed I was shaking..
My sister's been cruising the neighborhood looking for a wrecked pickup, too.. along with her friends.
One of her friends was walking to the corner store when it happened and saw a truck rollin' smoke come around the corner and went down a dead-end street in the trailer park.. truck's nowhere to be found this morning, of course.. I probably should've gotten back up at 2:30.. I probably could've found the fawk then.
Looks like the damage would be on the driver side of the vehicle and if you had some paint, you could hunt down that color.
Red paint chips. According to my sister, with a lot of other colors on the backside - vehicle must've been painted a few times.
Bonus - person left a jug of NAPA antifreeze in the street for me.. must've flew out of the truck when they hit, or when they took off after the impact. Has red paint rubbed onto one side of it.
I wonder if it was a recent paintjob.. hrmm..

Funny, my sister was thinking the same - she was just going to case the local bars, not go inside.. but that's a good idea, too.
Could I be lucky enough that he'd come back down my street again at 2:30 tonight in a wrecked pickup? Now THAT would make for an interesting evening...
I'll have to take some time and cruise around the bars..
And I was worried about putting the new t'case adapter on and getting the Dana 20 swapped in so I could get the driveshaft cut down tomorrow.
Oh, if that was my only worry..
HarleyM 06-27-2002, 01:22 PM A friend of mine had his pick-up parked off the street one night and it got nailed too. We did some alley driving and back fence checking and did find it.
Good luck on finding the SOB, I'm going to check with a couple of guys that used to work with me that are from Helena and try to find out if they have heard anything .
The best place to check that I can think of is that country bar. I believe it was in the Kmart area but can't remember now If you know which one I'm talking about check to see if Shawn is still bouncing there and ask him about it. He always seemed to know what was going on around that town.

Yeah, no kidding. It couldn't have been the rusty Travelall I'm looking to unload.. or the trashed trail Scout that is begging for a new tub.. or just any part of the Scout, since I have a half dozen others..
Nooo.. the straight truck.. the nice respectable truck.. :(
Michelle came over and took some pictures with the digi cam tonight.
We then cruised the neighborhood, the local bars, etc.. no luck.
However, before I left work I got a call from some wheelin' friends.. spotted a red Ford with front end damage at the parts store.. gave the cops the plate #..
Stopped at my parts store, Champion, and caught up with the guys there - they'd been on the prowl all day, too.
Handed me the same plate #. Said they'd seen blue paint on it.. and the manager at Checker says he's a regular customer, truck was fine yesterday, and he's a regular partier.
Called the cops back.. sounded annoyed with me, then said they stopped the truck I'd phoned in earlier, and it was old damage (his word or their investigation I wonder..)
Dunno. Maybe the officer handling my case will have more to say in the morning when he gets back on duty.
Here ya go, in Digital Color.. uhh.. Glory..

NotQuiteSane 06-28-2002, 01:32 AM Geez tom, that blows.
sorry I don't have spare parts to offer you.
as top dealing with the :rainbow: fawker, you mix equal parts of & . melt over a low flame to make a powder. either add plaster of parris to make blocks, or use in powder form.
since thermite is a class D fire (7000+ degrees) agent, you'll need a magnesium strip or something similar to start it.
I'd say about 2 pounds in powder form, about 1" wide down the center line of the offending vehicle should do the trick.
I've seen about a quarter ouce burn through an engine and leave a hole in the ground.

HarleyM 06-28-2002, 07:05 AM NotQuiteSane, I do like you idea but it would cause more problems than it is worth. Unfortunatly with the way things are done with the system now, if Tom took revenge of any kind he would be the one to get nailed to the wall. He would have to do it with no marks and no witnesses. I don't like the system either when the criminal has more rights then the rest of us.
Tom if they continue to say that the damage is old get as many statements for people that heve seen the pickup and give it to the cops. That may push them a bit to check into it further and do an actual investigation on this. Try and get a sample of the red paint off of yours and put it into a bag so you have it in case they actually try to prove he did it. Get some pictures if possible of his pickup and maybe find out where he lives. It shouldn't be far from your place, unless he uses that as a short cut to the main road.
If not I know of this coulee behind Holter lake........................

Joe V 06-29-2002, 10:02 AM Tom,
You have my sincerest condolences. That is enough to make a grown man cry.
Harvester of Sorrow 06-29-2002, 02:34 PM Bummer deal man...
I was T-Boned in our Montero by a drunk driver a couple of years ago in Yakima, WA. No fun, so as was already mentioned, at least you did not get hurt!
What are your plans for the 200? Gonna fix it or leave it on the curb as a grim reminder to the fuck? Cause you know that it is someone around that area. Why else would they have been thorough faring your neighborhood at that hour?
tsm1mt 06-30-2002, 11:32 PM Travelette Update
Well, it's been a heckuva 5 days or so..
I've been cruising around town hoping to see a red pickup with damage. I gave the Helena Police information on a good suspect, but they have yet to return any of my phone calls.
After much moping and head scratching and a LOT of cussing.. a somewhat humorous suggestion by Kip Eagles (chain it to a tree, back up, and go for the sympathy votes) and a short conversation with John Comer.. I've finally come up with a course of action.
Today I went to my friend's place where I store a couple Binders. In particular, my '74 100 4x4 single-cab long-box.
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/6_30_2002/smDCP_0001.JPG
Too bad the driver's fender has a dent in it, the hood has a couple dents, the grille has been cut and spliced with a 78 Ford part, and the blue paint is too light and peeling badly. However, the front clip is in much better shape than my current one.
I remember Dan Phariss among others mentioning that the front clips on these trucks come off rather easily. Fortunately, he was right. :)
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/6_30_2002/smDCP_0006.JPG
I spent about 2 hours in the tall grass sneezing my head off with hand-tools and managed to pull the front clip, though I required Michelle's assistance to load it up into the bed of my mom's '68 Chevy 1/2T.
It's a rather simple affair. Two or three bolts at the bottom of the fender on the inside, two bolts into the firewall from the fender, 2 along the inside vertical edge of the inner fender, 3 across the horizontal part, one bolt to undo the strut support, two bolts under the littel metal covers on the cowl, and one bolt that's accessed via a plugged hole just above the door hinge.
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/6_30_2002/smDCP_0011.JPG
Repeat for the other side, of course, and then I had to remove various fuel items from the overflow tank in the inner fender, unbolt the center body mount up front, unplug the wiring harness from the firewall for the front clip.
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/6_30_2002/smDCP_0012.JPG
In any case, 2 hours plus another 1/2 hr to fetch the pickup and some help to load.. and I had the dented hood, complete front clip, radiator, and front bumper (big, chrome double-tube bumper..) all home, sitting in the shop.
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/6_30_2002/smDCP_0014.JPG
With any luck, I'll be able to get the mangled front clip off of the Travelette Monday night after work - and I'll be using air-tools this time (no air in the field, and my onboard air is on the truck, trapped under the munched hood).
So my plan is to put the '74 100 4x4 front clip onto the Travelette, have the 100's radiator cleaned and checked, and then put everything together to make the Travelette operational again.
No where near as pretty as it once was, but it'll be driveable.
With the Travelette operational, I hope to still drive it to RMIHR and NWBRU. Along the way, I hope to take advantage of a few of the many gracious offers of some clean sheetmetal for the Travelette (I'll be in touch with those that offered soon to figure out just who has what that I need..).
Sometime after returning from the shows, I'll finish building my IC392 for the Travelette, then pull the front clip off of the Travelette and return it to the 100 4x4, where it belongs, and then take some time to clean up, paint, and otherwise "prep" the new front clip for installation after the engine goes in.
Probably go for a nice new 4-row radiator while I'm at it, too.
On the plus side, I spent two hours at one junkyard on Friday, and probably another 2 hours at another on Saturday. Over 100 pictures at each one, so I now have a nice catalog of all the good sheetmetal and other items in Helena - plus some pics of "rare" Binder parts others may be interested in.
I got a closer look inside the engine bay today. The waterpump looks like it'll even turn out good, though a few fan blades may be bent. Power steering pump looks fine. Everything else should be unharmed. I'll know more tomorrow.
I've had plenty of offers of sheetmetal, plus I found some at the local yards that would suffice (making sure I have a plan B - there's good metal to be purchased in Helena if I can't manage to transport stuff in the Travelette).
I'm pretty sure I can make 69-73 sheetmetal work with the '74 cab - at least, outer, inner, and core support. The 74/75 specific items I'm having a harder time tracking down are the grille, hood, and lower valance/grille. I found two so-so hoods in the local yards, nothing but bent lower valances, and one very trashed grille.
Mark Korsten was kind enough to locate at least one hood/grille combo in Grant, CO and set it aside for me. I haven't gotten details on exact condition yet, but I'm sure they'll do.
I could use a second '74 grille - though I wouldn't be nearly as picky on the second one. I'd like to replace the Ford tubular grille mounted w/ cable-clamps on my '74 100.. so a tweaked or well used grille would still be an improvement.
My thanks to everyone for all of their help and support. I have a game-plan now, and I'm acting it out - I feel better having something to do to move towards making things right. I'm still very bummed that I won't have the great specimen of an unrestored original to "show" that I once did.. but I bought it for a work truck anyhow.. and at least everyone's come to expect me to pull up in a battered, bashed, forlorn looking vehicle anyhow..
Hmm.. still doesn't look any better..

Well, it's been there a few days for anyone to see.. and I've been patrolling the neighborhood hoping to find the fawk.. no luck yet.
It's going to get fixed.. at first not "restored to it's previous condition" but at least fixed to be useable.
Damage to my trail rig is expected.. but I figured this truck was immune from that, being 2wd, 166" WB.. I figured I'd never take it wheelin', and it could stay pretty.. maybe I'm just bad luck to Binders.. :)
That sucks

Chatted up both of the big wreckers and they're on the prowl now. :D Parts stores are on the prowl. National Guard is on the look-out. The 4x4 club is on the lookout..
I sure hope SOMEONE finds 'im.. and the Helena PD actually does something about it..

Yep. Funny you should say that.. I'm not going racing this weekend. :( Didn't get the racer put back together yet, and have enough to do with the tow-rig repairs anyhow...
So this weekend I really really hope to finally get the fawkin' stereo installed.
Head unit's come down in price about $40 since I bought it. :)
Took the time to put a new FM antenna into the fender before I mounted it up.
I'm tired of singing to myself on 200+ mile drives.. Michelle might be starting (hah!) to wonder about me a bit..
AM/FM/CD/MP3, 4 Pioneer 6.5 3-ways to go into the doors.. steering wheel remote (oooh.. ahhhh...)
I'll worry about tweeters and a sub later.. 4 speakers will be a huge step-up in itself.
Heck, maybe I can get the CB installed, too..

I think that thing is sooooo long and claims so much land anywhere it parks that you should have been able to ask for national emergency funds for repairs....they give it to just about anyone these days!
Good luck with the rest of the repairs and such.

Yeah, somehow I always seem to keep my humor. This one just required a day or three of :mad3: and a little depression first. :D
Every time I bust up my racer, or pinball my trail rig off a tree I'm out there laughing and having a good time.
Sh*t happens.. but USUALLY it's my own dumb fault. This time it wasn't.. that makes it worse. :)
At least the repairs are going quicker and smoother than I expected.. only lost a week to this mess. :(

LOL.. I've got a new head unit and two speakers still in box, in the back of my tow rig for almost THREE years now.

like the roar of the 345 @ 3200 isn't sweet music
:D
Hammerlock 07-03-2002, 01:09 PM Couldn't you find a front clip of the same color? :flipoff2: J/K when are you going to paint it? I would like to see at least one mandera vehicle look'n good.

It's not the roar of the motor, it's the ticking of the lifters that bothers me. :D
I can't hold 3200rpm continous at the moment, or the lifters tick.. still "cleaning out" the neglected 345.
That'll change after the summer race season is over and I finish the "406" for it. :D Picking up the rest of the parts at RMIHR - RPT motor mounts, headers, cam, lifters, BBC valve springs, clutch..
The door panels will help, too, to cut down on the noise.
NOTHING on the floor of the truck.. and with the 4-door cab and no door panels, it's a big metal reverb box.. :D
The clutched fan helped a bunch, IMO..

Ouch.
I HAD a ONE good looking rig in my fleet, and I was *sooo* looking forward to taking it to RMIHR and NWBRU and having something "respectable" to show..
.. if I ever get my hands wrapped around the fawker that fouled up my blissful fantasy of winning something other than Ugliest Truck...
I'd like to say it'll be painted by next year, but who knows. I've NEVER done body work before - closest was when I hit a pole in my Scout, and pulled the fender off, put it down in the grass, and beat on it with a hammer until the dent wasn't a big caved in spot, but just a big flat spot on the curved top/side of the fender.
I plan on acquiring a nicer front clip at RMIHR, along with a 74/75 hood, grille, and lower valance for the Travelette.
Then I can put this clear-coat peeling battered light-blue front clip back on the 1/2T pickup I borrowed it from.. and finish building my "around town/ light wheelin" '74 1/2T 4x4 single-cab pickup.
In the meantime, an Ugly tow rig is better than No tow rig. :-(

I used some stuff called "Dynomat" spelling? on one of my rigs. Comes in rolls or round globs. Stick it on the inside if the doors or any other large sheet metal areas. The stuff is amazing sound deadener;)

I was thinking of using the (cheaper) generic knock-off of Dynamat.
For the doors and inner door panels, I was just going to hose 'em down with some undercoating. I already POR-15'd the bottom 1/3 of the door insides, and the whole backside of the panels.
Eventually I want to POR-15 the entire cab floor, then some dynamat like stuff, then maybe some... CARPET.. or something.. and/or new floor mats (I see SSS carries new factory mats).
Yeah, hardly "hardcore" wheelin'.. and scarily "restoration" like for me.. but damnit, this is/was my NICE truck, not my been-through-the-ringer-and-back trail rig. :D
If it helps, though, I *do* plan on putting an in-cab 6pt cage in it. :D

Didn't mean that as a dig. Just read up on painting and do it. Just use the cheaper paint and if doesn't meet expectations sand it down and repaint. Don't sweat doing the body work. With bondo you get unlimited tries to get it right. Just keep the bondo as thin as possible. If I'm not sure if the repair is straight I just spray paint the area with gloss black. If it looks good with glossy black it will look good in any color. Don't show up at RMIHR unless you've got it all painted and waxed. :)

:D I'll probably bring a few cans of flat-black to touch up Little Devil before the judges come by... it hides the dirt. :D
