: New bumper, D-ring mounts?
Sully 06-27-2002, 12:44 PM Okay, so I'm getting ready to builda new bumper this weekend. Keeping it pretty simple, basically going to be a piece of 2x4 rectangular steel pipe.
I'd like to hang a pair of D-ring mounts off the front, and was figuring on making some tabs of 3/16" steel with a hole drilled through the center and welding them on.
My question is: Is this going to be strong enough? Or am I setting myself up for a 3/16" steel missile if I ever use them for extraction?
I'm know some of you here have done some trick, and seriously beefy sheet, what do you reccomend? And pictures are always welcome to help spark creativity, if its a particularly cool idea.
(not really interested in just bumper picks, been there, read that thread, I'm really just interested in how I'm gonna tow my buddy's toy-o-let)

JoshC 06-27-2002, 12:49 PM Welcome :flipoff2: Newbie :flipoff2:
Rubicrawler fabbed up a killer bumper not too long ago. D-rings and receiver hitches were discussed. For $20 bucks I'll send you my newbies guid to using SEARCH!
Sully 06-27-2002, 01:15 PM Thanks Josh, but I picked up a used copy of that guide already. Some of the pages were stuck together though.... :flipoff2:
Actually been there and read that post (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55777&highlight=bumper) and I found out where I could buy D-Rings, but not a whole lot on how folks have mounted 'em. ;)
And thanks for the :flipoff2: welcome :flipoff2: , heh, I seem to get that every time I come out of lurk mode.:rasta:

Funny reply:p
If you go to a trailer shop or even a weldig shop, they sell permanently weld-on d-rings...the ring fits into a semi-circle sleeve which is welded to whatever it is mounted to. If you want to use a clevis (unscrewing d-ring thingy) then Avalanche Engineering sells some nice and proudly priced 1" thick blocks for these...AVOID the 3/16"

As opposed to temporary weld-on d-rings:question: :flipoff2: :smokin:

well, they can be ;) suppose it depends on the weldor ;)
Root Moose 06-27-2002, 08:21 PM ...was make the d-ring mounts be holes drilled in 1"x3"x3/4" bar stock that passed through the bumper to slide into the open frame rails. Then I added "spacers" that were welded to the bar stock so that when bolts through the frame/bar were applied it didn't crush the frame rail.
This way the D-ring is massively over built, and is positively bolted to the frame rail. Oh, the tube bumper had holes cut in it that slipped over the bar stock and was welded to the bar stock.
Not sure if a Scout will allow this kind of geometry without screwing up the departure angle but worth checking out.

jdjanda 06-27-2002, 10:53 PM I just use industrial Velcro, works like a champ, and I can remove then when needed :p

ROFL. Think that will work with my kids to get them to sit still on long car rides? If it works for your bumper.... ;)

Sully, first off, stay away from the 3/16" sh!t and use 5/8" or 1/2" bar stock. The D-Rings are cheap ($5-8) and work great. For mounting, use a good 220V Stick or Mig and weld the bastards on!
But here's the deal, you gotta post pics when you're done!
Good luck!
Second Mouse 07-08-2002, 11:37 AM 3/16" sounds way too small to me. I will be using 1" thick and about 3-4" across. My buddy used the exact same setup on his TJ, and although I don't think he has tried and tested them, one would think that it would be much stronger than the 3/16" ones. You can be too safe with your winching points.
JBscout 07-09-2002, 07:10 PM My D-ring mounts are 1x2" bar stock. They have a hole drilled in one end just big enough for the shaft on the d-ring to pass through. I attached them to my bumper by cutting a hole just big enough for the bar stock to pass through on the front and another square hole slightly smaller than the bar stock on the back of the bumper. This gave me a good overlap weld on the backside to go along with the weld on the front.
