i wish i could get a real blazer but my parents wont let me. today i joked with my dad about a burb when it drove buy(it was a solid axle one), i said that i could sleep in it in the back yard untill i could drive and bring a tv and heater out there with me. there is also a blazer in my niehhborhood that has a bad gas tank, and i was loooking at it one time and the guy drove in to his drive way and asked if i wanted to buy it , i said i wish. if i could buy it i would probably cover it up in the back yard so it doesnt rust anymore, and try to get it running. i wish my dad liked trucks like i do. he used to wheel yotas in the 80's when he was in colage.
just4cuz 12-15-2007, 05:44 PM Sounds like you need to get him reinterested in wheeling and do a father/son project.
72blazer 12-15-2007, 05:46 PM it's never too late to get him involved again. give it a try...suggest a father/son build. keep pushing it until he caves. :D
bigblazerboy 12-15-2007, 05:57 PM i wish, all i like to talk about is blazers. if i see one im like look a blazer, and he dosnt really care. i wish he liked wheelin like he did in the 80's. he would say when would we have time or you cant even drive yet. he is a swim coach during the summer and he is an engineer. the only "bonding" thing we do is mountain bike.
bigblazerboy 12-15-2007, 06:07 PM does any one know any ideas on how do get him back into trucks. or to start a father/son build.
hes go a 96 tahoe, and a 03 slk 320, used to have a 93 3000 gt vr4 twin turbo. and in the 80's 3 yotas 81-83 lifted, and 2or3 s-10's and a green 4dr bravada which my sister screw up after running over a brick thing and a light pole at out old house trying to avoied the cat and accedentaly hit the gas
chuckiekillskittens 12-15-2007, 06:38 PM good luck getting a blazer:D
i got my scrambler when i was 14. does your school have any auto tech or small engine repair programs? i know 13 is probably too young to get into them(you could get in at 15 at my high school, 14 for small engine repair if i remember correctly). if you tell your dad you want to get into those programs he might take you more seriously. right now he probably just thinks its a phase and doesnt want to get something youll lose interest in.
Donahue 12-15-2007, 06:41 PM hell, now a days you are lucky if any industrial shop classes are in school.

i went to a class at our tech school over the summer. it was auto tech and small engines, but we didnt do much. o yeah im in 8th grade. my neighbor goes to hermitage(local tech school) and i talk to him when the are working on the 4x4 nissan, not lifting it or anything special just getting it to run right nad put a new bed on. they know i like trucks but i dont think hes as interested in wheelin any more. right now hes looking a mtb tires and im right next to him.

bigblazerboy 12-17-2007, 05:16 AM hey i was wondering if someone could measure the width of the frame in the front and back, how long is a blazer frame and how long is a blazer body.

greengrass 12-17-2007, 08:42 AM hey if you really want to build a truck just save up enough money for the truck and some parts to get started with......and walk up to him with a picture of the truck you want.. and just tell him you have the money for it. thats pretty much what I did when I was 14 (now 16) and my dad is pretty much the same.. except he was never into 4 wheeling. but since then I have built a pretty big shop on the side of my house to work in. and have boughten a shit load of tools. and over the 2 years I have bought 4 different trucks. and I'm almost done with me jeep (ya i know I'm in chevy tech.. but the only thing that is jeep is the body.) my advice would be to save all the money your going to put into a rc car. and save it for a real truck you will have a lot more fun with it.. and when your done building it you will know a lot more than most teenagers.

x2 save the cash from your rc car and hit up craigslist... youll have a pile of parts in no time. i wouldnt be set on a blazer though. there are a lot cheaper ways to get into wheeling
greengrass 12-17-2007, 05:09 PM ya really, I paid 400 bucks for my 77 fullsize jeep cherokee, 200 bucks on 38.5 tsls, and 1400 on a beat up blazer with 1 tons and a 350, I sold the top of the blazer for 200, sold the set of ford axles the guy threw in for free for 700 bucks. so I spent 500 bucks for 1 ton axles sb350/th350/203 and all I need is the doubler plate and for my 203/205 doubler which is like 650. and then another 600 bucks for 1410 yokes and joints all around and materials for a square driveshafts (untill I can afford a nice rear one) and I'm done
so pretty much I will have a decently built rig for under 3 grand... until i blow all my money on parts for the 350 (think i'm going 383 stroker.)
I would deffintly start saving for a truck if it's really what you want to do.. rc cars might be cool for a while.... but its not going to be anything like actually romping up a cliff haha.
bigblazerboy 12-17-2007, 06:21 PM hey greengrass, i know a blazers not the best way to start because if its got a good body there like $1000 or more. how did you get the money to get the truck a 14?
if i found one cheap i would ask him. like you all have said rc is just to keep me intertaiined untill i could drive then it fullsze truck. i have a bone stock hpi wheely king right now and was looking to get a custom tube frame build but the guy started at $100 for one built off of a frame and like $350 for a custom one.
if he let me get one then i could drive it in the back yard.
what do you think of this truck (http://bigblazerboy.page.tl/blazer.htm). i put it one my website because it was the only way to do it right now since i cant get on photo bucket.
chuckiekillskittens 12-17-2007, 07:34 PM check your craigslist... there are a ton of cheep jeeps on there

greengrass 12-17-2007, 07:38 PM I got the money from mowing lawns... from when I was like 11 or so I started mowing my neighbors lawns then as I got older I got more jobs in my town.. and at one time I had like 15 differnent houses I did. I was making like 300 a week. I don't do that anymore, I do independent studies now (kinda like homeschool..) and I work full time at a filter service place where I rebuild airfilters for tractors, so I can afford to buy tools and jeep parts. if you have any 4x4 shops or hotrod shops around you I would walk in there and see if they need help just cleaning up and doing little things and as you work there longer someone will ask you for help doing something on a truck and eventually you might end up working on trucks there. and you can learn a lot. just apply at a bunch of places to work, and even if you only work after school if you save up by the time your 15 you should have enough to start with the truck and be done by 16..
greengrass 12-17-2007, 07:48 PM http://richmond.craigslist.org/car/473190345.html
thats a prime deal. depending on how big of tires you want to go.. just find a 1/2 to, 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck with a running engine and swap everything over. and find some wheels and tires and be done with it.. its normally cheaper to find a running truck with good axles and an engine, then to buy axles off of someone who knows what they are worth.

lookin at my rc truck and i dont want to sell it because i just got it, but am trying to sell bmx bike and maybe my pro pulse soon to get money and then theres christmas. i mowe my yard and only get 5 or 10 bucks.
i bet all of the money ive spent on rc i could have one of those jeeps linked but am not a big jeep fan.
bigblazerboy 12-17-2007, 08:11 PM greengrass, i might go to one of the local 4x4 shops and see if they would need any help with anything. it wouldnt matter if it was cleaning floor and helping do stuff it would be fun and theres a blazer at one of them.
Gearhead 1990 12-17-2007, 08:46 PM Hey man, just keep up the interest in off roading! Keep bugging your dad about it until he finally lets you get one. I've been in your situation before. When I finally got my dad to let me get something he didn't mind it being around the house as long as it could be moved under its own power. And don't tear it apart unless you have all the parts to put it back together. I got my first truck when I was 14, I just got a bunch of lawn mowing jobs and saved my money from them. Now I'm 17 and have a different truck that I have been working on for a year and a half cause I can't get a lot of money all at once. But I'll give you a tip, start saving now and not when you get your license cause I guarentee you won't have much money left over after buying gas. Just my 2 cents
bigblazerboy 12-17-2007, 09:03 PM thanks. i hope the blazer near me is cheap. if it is i will save up. and hope to help out at one of the local 4x4 shops and maybe thay can help me.
i know my mom might let me get it my dad would probably say i am a dweeb or somthing like that. i have said different things but he wont even help me with my rc truck. he says have fun trying to make that. if the people at the 4x4 shop let me in maybe i can learn to weld or somthing and fix the truck i mmight get. it has some rust , but dont know the condition of the body.
would someone look at the post i made earlier and say what you think of that blazer.

That blazer looks like it would be a good truck to start with, those old chevys are cheap and easy to modify. As long as you don't go over kill building it, it would probably be a good rig for a long time

It seems like there is rust on every chevy truck with that body style, shouldn't be to big of a deal besides the looks. As for a gas tank, that should be a fairly easy fix for it, either find one in a junkyard or buy a fuel cell and put it in the back. But a blazer would be a really good start in my opinion:D

greengrass 12-17-2007, 10:14 PM ya if you were to get a job at a 4x4 shop you not only would learn a shit load of stuff, get cheap parts, get paid, but your dad would probably take you seriously. Your dad probably doesn't want a truck to get torn apart and never put back together. My parents were the same way as gearhead's I've had parts truck at my house but they had a set time on when they had to be picked up by the junker. as for my jeep it's out of the way of everyone so it can stay on jackstands. and I also have a limit of how many non running cars I can have at my house haha.. so when i brought then junk blazer to my house I had to take my toyota to my friends place till I was done. but the yota is done now. if your parents have not already got you xmas gifts maybe ask for a welder, I bought my first welder when I was 13 and it was probably the best thing I ever did.... its a great skill to have, and it pays well too.

just4cuz 12-18-2007, 01:18 AM Quick look through and wasn't sure if your wheelbase question was answered. 108" for the leaf sprung ones, 111" for the 92 and up IFS ones. If you look up Mitchells or collision repair you may be able to get a frame picture that shows all the cross members and gives the measurements for length, width and cross measurements to see if the frame is straight. My first jobs were mowing lawns and cleaning bathrooms in gas stations. I started my own business doing bathroom cleaning, nobody wanted to do it so I made a deal with all the station owners. They have all the cleaning supplies on hand and I cleaned them once a week. All I did was ride my bike to all of them and cleaned them and left. Started with 3 and had 12 when I promoted myself to a gas station employee pumping gas and doing oil changes and lubes. The owner was real cool and would let me work on my own stuff after hours.

bigblazerboy 12-18-2007, 05:10 AM wuld this be a good welder?
http://richmond.craigslist.org/tls/476551588.html
greengrass 12-18-2007, 08:30 AM well, if thats the welder I am thinking of its 20% duty cycle, which might be ok if you don't weld a lot. and its cool to have AC or DC but thats a stick welder, I think you would be better off with a mig, not saying you couldn't weld with that one but migs just come in handy and are easyer in tight places. first off make sure you have a 220 outlet in your garage, that can set you back if you don't have one.. but I think you want to go with a 220 welder. I had a 110 mig for a while and it wasn't powerfull enough and it was in constant. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200342924_200342924
I have a northern tool plasma cutter and its nice, same warranty as miller.
chuckiekillskittens 12-18-2007, 11:25 AM i disagree... i think you should start off arc welding before jumping into miging and tiging... just my opinion.
bigblazerboy 12-18-2007, 03:07 PM those are exensive for me, but look good. i would probably get one used.
i was searching criagslist and found this. http://richmond.craigslist.org/pts/511442562.html

i dont have a garage. i wish i did, if i got a truck i would buy one of those tent things like a temporary garage.
what would be a good cheap welder to start with. i mean cheap as in price not quality, ot maybe the local 4x4 shop would have one.

Personally I don't think that blazer is a very good deal. I think you should get one that is complete. I don't know how it is where you live but around here if you just keep your eyes open you can come across old chevys for next to nothing. My dad just bought an 84 short box with a 4 inch lift running and driving for 500 bucks. Just keep looking and you'll come across one for a good deal eventually. :D
greengrass 12-18-2007, 06:21 PM figure out what engine/transmission/tcase that blazer has in it. and how long ago it was rebuilt.. The drivetrain is most likely a 350/th350/np203 but it could be different. it might be a good deal if the engine is super clean. but I would look for something cheaper so you can have more money for mods.
bigblazerboy 12-18-2007, 06:30 PM i like the older blazers. i see some for sale but there all lifted and want a couple grand for them. if the guy near me will sell it i think it should be pretty cheap considering its got some rust.
i put more pics one my site click here (http://bigblazerboy.page.tl/blazer.htm)
bigblazerboy 12-18-2007, 06:35 PM i think the springs are sagin on the one near me. do you know what fron axle that is?
bigblazerboy 12-18-2007, 06:41 PM also maybe a solid axle yota. thats what my dad used to have.
Gearhead 1990 12-18-2007, 06:43 PM i think the springs are sagin on the one near me. do you know what fron axle that is?
The front axle is a 10 bolt so that means the rear can either be another 10 bolt or a 12 bolt. Either one will work for a while if your on a budget, but if its a 12 bolt it is quite a bit stronger and should be able to run 35s without too many problems. A 10 bolt will hold for a while but be prepared to break something lol.
greengrass 12-18-2007, 06:48 PM toyotas are cool and cheap, if you can find a EFI toyota and do a solid axles swap that would be a good platform to start with plus your dad would probably dig it.
bigblazerboy 12-18-2007, 07:00 PM he had a 82 and a 81 yota. i like the looks of those yotas.
the only thing about that blazer is i cant tell what year it is because it has a different front clip.
i guess i have to search craiglist some more.
bigblazerboy 12-20-2007, 08:16 PM i am going to try to spend less on my rc truck to get a real one.
today my mom said that i should get a old truck to mess around with. if the dud will sell his blazer cheap i might get it
greengrass 12-20-2007, 10:21 PM do you have the money for the blazer? if its been sitting there for a long ass time and he just wants to get rid of it, and you he's your neighbor offer to mow is his lawn for the next year or whatever or see if he has any shit he needs done. couldn't hurt to try.
bigblazerboy 12-21-2007, 08:04 AM hes not really my neighbor, he lives almost a mile away near the creak where i am going to take my rc truck crawling.
i bet if i asked he would sell it becasue its been siting for a year now, and theres and old jeep cj7 thats beeen sitin since 96, the windows on the soft top are green and it has a body lift.
no i dont have the money right now and dont know how much he would want.

i also need to know how long a blazer frame is. ive been working on my scale blazer and am making a frame from c channel.
Randomquikfingrs 03-15-2008, 05:49 PM hey greengrass, i know a blazers not the best way to start because if its got a good body there like $1000 or more. how did you get the money to get the truck a 14?
For seven hundred bucks I could get you setup in a 79 k10 longbed on 35's. Needs a flywheel, clutch, ignition switch and valve cover gaskets.
