I have a Jeep that I just put a 350 carborated motor in, I need to know how to wire up just the motor so it will run and charge. I have no wiring from the stock motor just the plugs coming out of the firewall, witch I have figured out power and all that. I just need to make sure the altornator and starter is correct thanks, I know I have a jeep but atleast it is chevy power:confused:

for your stater just hook it up like your jeep was. you will need a key on and when cranking hot wire for your dist, and for the alt the easiest way to do that is to us a one wire alt.

Run a hot wire from the dist,Run the bottom wire out of your alt.to the back of the alt, then run a wire to the battery Then It should start and run.

I have it all done, and started (sounds GOOD!!!) but, the alt. hums when the batt is hooked up???? I have a 2 wire alt. with the post in the back. I ran the red wire to the back of the alt. and then to the batt. If I understand the other wire (brown) is for a volt gage right?? I hope this is not a dumb question and I am thankfull for the help:):):)

With a 3 wire alt the big lug is for charging, one wire is for voltage sensing, and the other wire "turns on" the alt. It can also be used to run an idiot light. You can get that plug at Napa for a couple bucks if you don't have one already.
The two terms on mine are labeled 1 and 2, I believe that the 1 term is for the idiot light and the other is voltage sensing. voltage sensing is where the power distribution is, typically the battery lug on the starter. The idiot light is wired to both a hot wire with the key on and the alternator. (12v on both sides of the light)
I'm not 100% sure I have mine wired correct.

Big lug on the alternator to the battery (or other convienient binding post).
Terminal #1: is for an idiot light. Optional. If you want it, run it to any switched 12volt source and 194 lamp, or your jeeps bat light if it has one.
Terminal #2: is the excite wire, connect it to the bat terminal of the alternator. Regardless of what you read about it needing to be run to a terminal point close to your loads, GM doesn't do it that way, they just splice into the main bat feed 12-24" from the alternator.
HEI: 12guage wire from the BAT terminal to a switched battery source in start and run key posistions. NO ballast resistors or resistance wire, full system voltage.

1# spade is the excite wire or idiot light wire. If it is not going to a light (stock Jeep one works) it needs to have a resistor installed. The light is the best way to go, and LEDs are too small.
2# spade is only for battery sense, it tells the regulator how much voltage is on the battery.
Easy enough to install a one wire regulator, they are cheap, just make sure to leave OUT the wire wound resistor that goes from the poistive (insulated) brush holder screw to the ground brush holder screw. Doing this eliminates needing to hook up any of the spade terminals.
