: Zuk won't start.
914Driver 12-16-2007, 09:17 AM My 1986 1.3 was run with no oil and you know what happened next. I bought it with a dead engine but a very good everything else. I found a 1.6 and bought the adaptor plate and motor mounts and got it in the car.
It won't start. :shaking: I went back to basics, pulled #1 plug, cranked until I got compression, lined up the crank pulley with the TDC mark and checked the top mark for the cam. It was out 180'. OK, I rotated the cam until it hit the mark, realigned the distributor's rotor to the #1 wire and I should have life, right?
Nope....
I rechecked things three times, I have gas, air and spark. What did I miss?
Background:
1.6 motor but I'm using the 1.3 carbed head, mostly because I did a valve job etc. I'm also using the 1.3 distributor and pulleys from the 1.6.
Did I shoot myself in the foot somewhere along the line by mixing parts?
Thanx, Dan
cajunsuzukispider 12-17-2007, 09:32 AM what about the computer that runs the motor? you didn't say whether you had changed wiring harnesses or computers....
oh, by the way, if you decided that you were out 180 degrees on the cam based on what the book says, that's probably wrong. everywhere I look, all the books say that the cam timing mark should be pointing up. I'm on my 3rd samurai in 17 years, and on all of them the cam mark has to be pointing at the crank. perhaps the factory screwed up and put all the marks in the wrong place?
jd
cajunsuzukispider 12-17-2007, 09:34 AM your '86 is carburated, right? did you put that on the 1.6? maybe the whole intake manifold, too?
hmmm, if you got the right air/fuel mixture, compress it and contain it, then spark it at the right time, you gotta run.
914Driver 12-17-2007, 09:39 AM Man I hope so! It's a carbed 1986, always was, no computer.
The book I have says the cam mark should point up, 12 o/c pointing toward an indent in the metal backing plate for the belt cover.
'Splain this again, use small words....
zuki4x4chick 12-17-2007, 09:43 AM on a 1.6 for TDC on cyl no 1 the cam timing mark faces down not up
when the timing marks are lined up, its set at tdc for cyl no 4
in other words set the marks up.....then rotate 180 and you will be at cyl no 1 so you can set your dist up
all the book (other than the factory repair manual) are wrong
cajunsuzukispider 12-17-2007, 09:48 AM exactly.
914Driver 12-17-2007, 11:36 AM Thanks guys. I'll try it again but I was there once.
It's too darn cold out there tonight, a foot of snow and blowing 25mph. Maybe tomorrow.
Dan
cajunsuzukispider 12-18-2007, 02:22 PM maybe springtime if you ask me.
914Driver 12-20-2007, 03:51 AM Got it! Got it!
Crank notch at 12:00, cam locator at 6:00, put the dist on #1 wire and just look at the key. Fires right up! With nothing on the pipe but a liberated cat it's kinda noisey, but the timing is spot on, it does what I tell it and no leaks! There was some smoke from the new gaskets and Permatex duckbutter but that will go away.
Thanks for the help guys. If I was that clever I don't know if I could sleep at night. :lmao:
The cat is a "high performance" 2.5" from Jegs, from there I have a stainless muffler from a sport bike, hope to hear good things from this Sammy.
Thanx again, Dan
DakAttack 12-21-2007, 09:39 PM I had a tracker with a 1.6. I changed the water pump and had everything out of the way including the airflow sensor. Tried and tried to start it with no results. I was stumped until I brought a mechanic friend over. He played around with it for awhile and said "Duh!" Try it now. He hooked the air filter assembly back to the throttle body and it fired right up! The computer said not enough airflow and wouldn't allow ignition...Could this be the same thing????
