I have the oppertunity to buy a 86 cj 7. It already has a 6 inch combination body and suspention lift, 33 inch tires, hard and soft top. This jeep is not going to be an extream wheeler like mine.
It is for my soon to be wife who needs a new car and wants to get a jeep.:)
Yep I converted her....... The problem is that it has the old 4 cyl. eng. I know nothing about this engine. They want 3,900 for the jeep and the body is in exelent condition. I need this jeep to be a reliable daily driver. Is this eng worth a s#$@ or shoud we pass?
I did not do a search cuz I wanted peoples opnions not some teck write up on how to throw away that engine and put a 350 in it. Like I said its for my new(well soon to be in aug.) wife and were still poor so we have to do a little at a time.

If it is only goin to be driven mostly aroound town, the 4 popper ought to be fine. U mite want to have a mechinic check out the engine. ie: compression check, check the how the plugs look etc. Sounds like a good buy if it is sound. Whot kind of top,?:usa: :usa:

it has the hard top. I went and test drive it and boy is it gutless. I think i may look around a bit longer. I dont think it will sell anytime soon. Unless you are a jeep junkey i dont think anyone would want this engine expessially with 3.72 gears in the axle!!!
I dont know what the hell he was thinking going to those gears. Should have kept the 4.10s

Cj didn't have 4.10's with the 4 banger...

If he did have 4.10s at one time, see if he still has them.

If your soon to be wife is going be driving this daily, maybe she'll want more power and you'll "have to" do an engine swap. And following said swap you'll have to replace the running gear to handle the power. :D

As stated, CJ's didnt have the 4.10's with the 4 popper. If you get it, ditch the body lift to bring it down some and throw some 31's on it. It will pick up some pep, and be just fine for a street bound daily driver. Sounds to me like its just over tired for the gears it has.

That 4cyl is a GM "Iron Duke" or as some Jeepers call them "Iron Puke" the emissions and other crap they put on the Jeep Iron Dukes really dogs them down, but the motors are plenty available, so a low mileage replacement might be worth looking for. I know a guy that used to build 4cyl class circle track cars and he swears by the Iron Duke, claims you can get over 200 horse out of one dirt cheap. I'm not sure if I believe him, but they did kick him out of the race class cuz nobody could beat his cars, every time he'd come up with a new trick, they'd outlaw it.

Oh, by the way, the Iron Duke has the same bellhousing as a Chevy 350, but chances are the trans is a T-176, SR-4, or T-4, and not up to V8 power.

A couple of thoughts, A CJ7 as a daily driver? If it's going to be used mainly on the road, I'd take the $4K and buy a nice honda - seriously.

Otherwise, should be fine with that motor. 6" of lift seems like an awful lot for 33" tires - if it is mainly going to see street duty you might want to lower it some so it handles decently.

as nice as it may be......for 4k you can come up with a pre-91 YJ that she will probably like a lot more...maybe.


or you can get a nice xj that will be A LOT better as a DD and still be able to perform.

I'll second that emotion. CJ's, even when scrupulously maintained, are not a DD I would saddle my wife with. I wouldn't mind little bits of "personality" that frequently come with an older CJ, but not hearing her bitch about the problems would be worth the price of a ricer.

AND I STILL WOULDNT WANT MY WIFE (soon to be) DRIVING IT DAILY.

YJ's are marginlly better, and for 4K I could find a "decent" one around here.

After driving this jeep I dont think we will be getting it. We will keep looking for a 4 popper YJ. One cool thing about my wife is that she grew up in the country. She has been driving trucks, tractors, ect. her whole life. To get to her familys house you have to drive about 2 miles of dirt road so in the winter 4x4 is a must have deal.( I cant talk her into another suberu)Im not to worried about her being able to handle the vehicle I just think we will hold out for a better riding YJ.
Oh ya the 86 year is the one with a few 44 rears in them itleast im pritty sure it is. This one had the 20 in it thoagh. I actually liked my 20 after I full floated it much better than my 44. It broke about half as much as the 44 did.
