: Birfield length difference
texican 06-27-2002, 04:42 PM The truck I tore down today had the original 76-78 Birfields, I have heard lots of discussion on various boards about these, so I took a couple of pix. Notice the length of the axle section. The 76-78 Land Cruiser is longer, this is the reason you can't run Asin hubs with these . Been there tried it, the shaft is just enough longer that the outer locking cap will not bolt on.
The one on the left is a Super Birfield, with the same sizing as the Mini/79 and Newer LC.

BJ On Roids 06-27-2002, 07:16 PM so if you convert to the super birf AND the aisin hubs then you would be sweet...right?

I'm doing Super mini birfs and Aisin mini hubs!!
texican 06-27-2002, 08:49 PM Asins are without a doubt the strongest hubs for our trucks, however unless you are running 35" locked front and rear and half-crazy (85% of Lone Star Land Cruisers), Warns, Ramsey's, Mile Marker, or Superwinch seem to hold up OK..... if $$$ were tight, I'd go Super BF's first in the upgrade dept.
Most of the hub breakage on LC's I have seen are caused from loose studs/bolts,(me Moab) or a BFR got inside the wheel and broke it. Seems like Nolen grenaded a Warn once, course he could F' up a wet dream....

Cruzilla 06-28-2002, 09:05 AM Yea the mini's are shorter, I bought a new birfield from AllPro for my 78 frontend they said would fit (HA!!) it was a mini birf and in order to make it work I had to use a washer and 12mm bolt!
Now I got a whole new mess on my hands! I have a FJ60 front axle housing/knuckles with 78 FJ40 spindles and hubs with Asin locking hubs.
Now the real kicker is that the birfield shaft is too short to use the snap ring and too long to use a washer and bolt!(rubs on the inside of the cap and locks the hub in short order!!)
So the question is do you have to have somthing on the end of the shaft or can you just let it slide free?
I wonder if the birfield can back in too far and destroy the inner axle seal, or will the bell of the birfield stop it from traveling that far?

texican 06-28-2002, 10:31 AM AFAIK Stock BF's will work with nothing on the end, all of the Arkansas guys I run with run nothing at all, they have them set up to swap parts quick, no outer snap rings no c clips inside the bf's.....Long's have to run them because of the bell welded on the inside.

Cruzilla 06-28-2002, 10:40 AM Sounds good, are the minitrck hubs/bearings and spindles as strong as a 40's? If I am going to use the Longfields than i will have to convert to this so I can use the snap ring. I know that the spindle is smaller on the mini so the bearings are smaller as well. I wonder if the "83" FJ60 front end I'm useing used the same size stuff as the mini trucks? When I got the housing it was missing the spindles and hubs so I just used my FJ40 stuff for the swap.

ROTFL.... Needed the laugh, as it as been a crazy week.
Signed on the new house on Tuesday, Storm blew part of it's roof off on Wednesday... told Pam not worry, as it could have been much worse. She got laid off on Thursday.... Meanwhile we have THREE houses and three mortgage payments. Oh well, never a dull Moment around these parts!

texican 06-28-2002, 03:51 PM I just checked, in my NAPA computer to make sure, what I thought, the 85 Mini 4x4, 76 FJ40 and the 85 FJ60 use the same inner and outer wheel brgs.

Yep, everything in the hub is the same. Only difference is the length of the BF.
No strength difference at all.
Run the mini/Late cruisre stuff. You will not be dissapointed...
