I have been dealing with Gary for over 20 years , the only thing that I have to bitch about is when you call you will get put on hold, I have been running the Military sm420 now for about 4-5 years no problems yet

His wife works for the Kalifornia version of the IRS.:flipoff:

And then he wants cash on the side. And because his wife works for the state mafia, he cannot be audited.:flipoff:

At least that is what he says.

Looks like bob/ca has got some "issues".

I've been dealing with them for 15 years, always good service and ok prices. If it's a jeep part, they can get it if they don't have it.

"Capitol Jeepers, can you hold please?"
Gary sold shirts for while with that on the back.
They are very knowledgable, but I have found them to be slow with ordering things, and a little higher in price than other shops.
Hell, they get a lot of "on order" stuff from Central Four Wheel Drive, why not just drive around the corner and pick it up with out the middle man.
They do have a lot of stuff that you can not get, easily, any where else. On high dollar items, they will always wok with you on the price.

I have gone in there a few times and never purchased. I am always made to feel like I am some punk kid who doesn't deserve to rock crawl, then one day I went in depserate for a part and had my Jeep in tow, and he seemed to respect me. Whatever, I dont do business with people who dont treat all customers the same. And I wasnt impressed with his prices either. I like Specialty Parts, but maybe thats cause I am biased :p

I agree with Keith. I have been in there numerous times and get treated like I have no clue what is going on. Called several times for prices and after 10 minutes of being on hold i hang up. I saw that they had the .5" spacers for under the D44 Hi steer arms. My buddy needed one and he called. Took him 5 minutes to explain to the guy what the part is. The guy said that there is no such part made. Then my buddy told them they have the part in the front case under the counter. I stay away from the place.

Seems to be mixed opinions but I do relate to the negative things that I am hearing. Gary sold me a SM420 that he said was new in the box surplus with a cane shifter. I sent 925 dollars for the gear box and shipping and after he gets my money order he calls and tells me that I get a swapped out tower and it was originaly remote shift..!!!!! Now when I put the old used top on the second speed synchro is forced together and causing the trans to bind up........I don't like the answers I am getting from Gary and others in accompaniment........and I realy am pissed off about his bait and switch tactics!!!!!!!:mad2: :nuke:

Watch out for the military surplus sm420s. Most that I have seen used the stupid remote shifter cap and some that have been advertised as "new" were wornout rebuilds, by the military, and parts that needed to replaced weren't. The cap can be a big issue and swaping them is not a good idea. The sm420 used 3 different caps and if you get the wrong one the transmission will have problems going into gear or popping out of gear.

Thanks to Gary at Capitol Jeepers, it realy sounds like the guy is pulling one over on me!!! I've been told by Parts Mike and about a dozen other pro transmission people that this tower switch game is big trouble.. All Gary has to say is that everyone is full of shit, that he has sold 108 of the military units and I'm the first to have any trouble!!!!!
I feel the guy took me for a ride!!!!!

I've dealt with Gary and Donny since I bought my jeep about 8 years ago. They are always very personable and i've never been treated bad. I haven't bought anything from them for awhile since I usually do mail order on small parts. (plus my jeep was garaged for about 4 years) Their prices aren't as good on smaller things since they don't buy in bulk.

The info you'll get from Gary is sometimes different from the "hearsay" you get from other yahoos. He's not in it to look "cool" so he'll give you a straight up answer. He's been in the business for a long time.

When I took him my t-18 years ago to have it adapted to my D20 case........he talked me out of it and told me to adapt it to a d300. Said i'd be much happier.....and I am. Saved money from buying 2 adapters from AA and he even sold me the d300 for $150.

I've never had a problem with them and if they've treated you like a "punk kid" well....................:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I'm with you those Specialty Parts Guys Are Cool. Or maybe just Jackasses that are cool. Ok maybe mostly that Steve guy's a Jackass.
If my prices are out of line let me know I'll do my best to work with anyone. On stuff like Atlas's I know I'm way not out of line. Hey at least I don't diss. fellow rock crawlers. Even Like Matt, or Kieth. Capitol Jeepers Is a good place, they are more old school. I just prefer somewhere else:rolleyes: and I am biased. Something about someone that supports the board or something.

On the 420's I have no opinion, I'm not familiar enough with the differences between them and the civii's

Well, Im no expert, but I've had a bunch of 420's in my possession. Me being the idiot I am I swapped shifter towers and could figure out why it was having issues (not going into gear etc). Took it to a local (in Tucson) tranny shop recommended by willys works and the guy (gotta be close to 70) informs me that he's been working on them since they were new, and that I had the wrong shifter tower and that was causing the issues. Either way, right shifter on the tranny and its been fine since.

I have to totally agree, that Steve guy is a jackass :flipoff2:

To me, it isn't even about supporting the board, it's about supporting the sport, and the people who are into it. When I blew up my motor, Steve not only offered me a free block, but I took my blown junk down there and he and Brad helped me with some teardown and advice. I had never been inside a motor before, and was a little nervous doing it, but all Steve said was "bring it over" and I was off and running. I have a hard time thinking Capital Jeepers would have done the same. It is worth my drive to "Beautiful Cordelia" (You really gotta get that off your tape Steve :flipoff2: ) for the service and knowledge Steve offers. Plus, he has a EVERY fawkin oddball part imaginable

I've been dealing with Gary, Don and Jorge for many years now and have never had an issue that they couldn't help me resolve if given the opportunity.

I purchased one of their "military" SM420s and have had absolutely no trouble with it. There can be challenges with the tower and shift forks but they know what it takes to get the thing working correctly if allowed to do so.

I agree they are old school, which I like. They take the time to BS with their customers and provide a personal level of service which can't be had most places now days.

Gary's Dad started this business and it's still a small family oriented deal . . . long live :usa: free enterprise!!!!

If I want my parts without the personal touch I can buy them via the Internet.

   Well all I have got to say about the whole thing is Capitol Jeepers sold me 925 dollars worth of headaches and I realy don't give a ----- what anyone else has to say about it.
I am through with that bunch!!!!
Parts Mike rules even if Gary says he's full of shit!!!!

The simple fact that a businessman would say that to any customer is so unproffesional it stinks just like so ans so's breath that works for him....or maybe it's Gary!!!!

Here's to ya Capitol........:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

[. I have a hard time thinking Capital Jeepers would have done the same. It is worth my drive to "Beautiful Cordelia"

Interesting debate.

I live in fairfield and personally would rather deal with Don at Capital than wait for the guys in cordelia to maybe get around to waiting on me when I'm standing in front of the counter in the store, or waiting for them to try to look up a part in an AA catalog I have at home. Even Napa can beat thier prices on most items.. seals, bearings, cables etc. Seems if your rig aint jacked like a circus wagon they aren't in a real hurry to help ya.

Don and Gary have always been fair with me, even when the mess up was mine. They are older school but not as old school as archer bros. which is fine by me. They know the parts, they know what they are talking about and are willing and able to take the time to explain the how to. As far as being on hold its true.. but many a caller has been placed on hold while they helped me figure out which parts I needed for the latest project.

my 2 cents

I have been dealing with cap. jprs for ten years .Have had no problems with them ever. They have been able to get imposible to get parts for me and at a fair price. Yeah you can go to parts mike but that ass flakes even harder than four wheel parts on service. We got a slave cylinder bracket from him and he gave us the wrong one we got a hold of him to get the right one . He said he would come see what the difference was and take care of it. At that point he fell off the face of the earth. If you had a problem with the shifter call them. Let them know, they take care of it. They bend over backwards to help their customers. I've been in the shop when an a-hole calls or comes in. You get treated as you treat them. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

You all seem to forget one thing here: I was sold " A brand new SM 420 and shifter tower in box, military surplus! This is not what He sent me! When I called they dodged all around the block and said all of my sources of info were wrong and Parts Mike was full of shit and that I had no complaint and there was nothing wrong at all! Furthermore when any reputable technician swaps changes or modifys anything he checks the results!!!!!!

Pretty obvious to me who started this problem.

tgariano
09-08-2002, 08:10 PM
sure enough, they should have checked it before sending it.
