: GM 14 bolt question (ARB)

I have heard that the GM 14 bolt ARB has had issues in the past, according to a buddy of mine, the part number has changed on the 14 bolt, but he says that the carrier has issues.

Thoughts?

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee (I know dont point to the jeep section), this is a GM question for sure, has any of you had issues with an ARB air locker in the 14 bolt? I am swapping the ford 9" and HP D44 in my jeep with a 14 bolt and a D60 and need to know if I should be looking for a different locker. I have ARB's now and I love the flexibility of them but the wife loves to drive it around town and we drive it to the trail so having a locker that is always locked is unnerving to me especially with the wify driving it around town with the kids.

If ARB's are not the shit on the stick that they are now in my jeep (Shit on a stick = good thing) then what type of locker should I consider for the 14 bolt?

Thanx guys!!!

ARB's are nice, and if they had trouble, I'm sure they fixed it so far. I know ONE guy that shelled out for an early one, and he loves it.

BUT for the money, I'd get a Detroit, and just learn to lift in corners. :D They're cheap(ish), proven, and work well.

Assuming this is for a FF... The locker has only been out for a year or maybe a little longer???

ARB is a good company that makes good products and has been around for a long time. I woulden't hesitate getting another ARB if I needed a selectable locker.

get a arb over a detroit and weld over what a detroit

imo welded is better in corners and on the gas the detoit will unlock/lock sometimes causing shock loads and can send ya spinning (had a buddy hit ice locked spun on the ice rolled truck) and ya can loose em if ya pop a shaft

sorry i misslead you but when people bust a shaft they often loose their detroit from the shock load

Spooled is way more predictable than a Detroit, it always does the same thing. none of this popping and ratcheting stuff. Has anyone ever busted a 14 bolt spool? I drive a spooled rearend through Canadian winters and have never had a problem with the ass spinning out around corners. Its a truck not a sports car, drive it accordingly. And dont presume that you are a better driver than your wife. And never say you are better driver than your wife, especially if she can hear you .

Back to the point. If I had the cash for an arb in my 14 bolt I wouldn't hesitate getting one.

Cash isn't the problem, its relaibility, I love the idea of a selectable locker, my brother in low swears by the Detroits, but I know an ARB dealer who swears by them. . . I have ARB lockers and love them its just that i'm concerned by what I have heard about 3rd member arb lockers as stated above. Any way keep the discussion going

Than a spool is the way to go. The more complicated a system the lower your reliability.... generaly

I say reliability from my own personal experiance, I am not going to put a spool on a street driven truck, especially when my wife will be driving it on the street with my kids in the back, i'm a very paranoid and cautious person.

Then get the ARB. The only reliability problems I've ever seen with ARB's are due to improper installation, so just make sure whoever does it knows what they're doing.

I have both a ARB and a Detroit and if you have the coin get the ARB it is very road friendly and when you need it flip the switches and they are there. You have no 'issues' driving in corners in the rain-snow-ice. Save yourself tire wear also because we know tires aren't cheap. I would get the stainless lines for them though it's a 'just in case' kinda fix....

Like rcurrier44 said, if you want reliablity go with a spool. It's more simple so genrally, it's going to be more reliable. Or from i've been told from many guys on here to just weld the 14 bolt, but it's all up to your preference. I've never personally never ran a spool in a rig, but I have run them in 1000hp drag cars and in a Chevelle I had, which was a daliy driver, I never had a handling problem on the road, rain or shine. Just my experience with them.

Detroit reliable
Arb Reliable - as long as it is installed correctly and you don't loose an airline or pressure.
Spool - Reliable but not for everyone.

It sounds like your sold on the ARB and you need some amo for your buddy. If you want the ARB get it! I'm running ARB's in my D60 and 14B and love them. I've never had a problem with either and would never run anything but...

Installed one of the first 14b ARB's back in 2005. Been beating the ever-lovin' crap out of the rig ever since.

Wouldn't use anything else.
