: Sprung under rigs.

Just curious to how many people keep their rigs sprung under and wheel the hell out of it. Also do you ever have any plans to SOA or link it?

So lets see what you got...

Mine is not only sprung under, but stock height. Right now I'm running 33's, but I have two Waggy axles that say 35's are in my future as soon as I regear. My goal is to get those 35's on with as little lift as possible (and lots of fender trimming). I like the low COG, stability, and road manners of keeping the SUA - just put lots of armor underneath!

This isn't exactly "wheeling the hell out of it", but it's one of the few pics I have of it in action:

A lot fo people ask me if I'm ever going to SOA my rig. I usually ask why? I get the job done SUA. When my suspension gets reworked it'll be linked in the rear and SUA up front for awhile. Then when I get bored with it I might SOA the front or just link it.

But for me its mostly fundage holding me back. If I had more spare cash I could do the things I want to. Right now my front axle is the weak link. So one of these days I'll figure out a way to build a 60 or something.:(

Here are some pics of my junk. I would 4 link the front and rear if I had the funds. But SUA gets the job done fine for now.

Front is SOA with HiSteer, stock Yj pack with extra leaves.

Rear is SUA with 3.5 BDS so I don't have to mess with Axle wrap as much.

I wheeled the piss out of it before the front SOA and it worked well. I wanted a 44 front and high steer so I went SOA. The front flexes better and rides way smoother. Someday I may go SOA in the rear or I may stay SUA and go to 6" lift XJ rears. Not sure yet.

Excuse the gay facial expression. I think this was shortly after I heard a rattle snake....

LOL...Ikeep posting those pics! You men have some fine lookin rigs there!

I went SOA when I swapped axles & was running a 4" BDS w/ 33's before. I put ALOT of time and money into my SOA and it rides and performes much better than my old SUA did. BUT, had I spent as much time and $$$ on the SUA it would have probably done just as well- but in different areas.

IF I had not been swapping axles, I doubt I would have done it. It is a slippery slope, and SOA meant I might as well push the wheelbase a bit further apart (not much, about 6"), and that led to some real PIA stuff with the steering. I went ahead with a SR up front, and that meant a long travel front shaft.

I am beginning to understand that there is a hell'uva lot to be said for a KISS rig that is plenty capable without being modded to the point of snoballing you into bankruptcy. Fawk links, fawk doublers, fawk 40's, and fawk your 60's. Give me a jeep that will fetch diapers as well as tackle the trail, crank every time, and haul my younguns to church on Sunday if I am so inclined.

What were we talking about again?:flipoff2:

my current set up:
RE Express 4.5 inch SUA
R9000 shocks
36 inch TSL's
minor fender trimming to fit tires
3/4 ton axles

I wheel mine hard, the leave springs are proving themselves as duable my last trip out at the Hammers. i am going to link mine, but im in no hurry.

My only complaint is the u-bolt nuts are rock snatchers. So I plan on doing some sort of u-bolt flip kit to get my nuts out of the rocks. At the hammers, its not a question IF you drag on the rocks, its how often you WILL drag on the rocks!

I'm totally roc'n the sprung under wonders... what I lose is flex I make up in lower COG.

R/E Extreme 2.5" Springs
Rancho 12" F 14" Rear
37" MTR' (she's a daily driver)
D30 with Chromos and a Lockrite
Currie Rock Jock in the rear with a Detroit
Atlas 4spd

This pic was with 35's; I've opened the wheel well as much as I can and am still getting a lot of rubbing with the 37's so I'm going to cut the wells out and build some custome units... kinda like 4wheelers did with that big ole orange YJ they did.

With 37's and some trimming... needs more... good shot of the gen-right towers in the rear...

http://fxanalytics.googlepages.com/IMG_4444.jpg

I'm a pretty big fan of the lower COG right now... I can push this thing pretty hard through the tight twisty trails out here, let the ass hang way out... right now the engine is the limiting factor but I'm able to run it through the rough and whoopy sections between 45 and 50mph. I'd need to stretch it a little and get a better quality leaf (deaver) to push it much past that... I'm guess in this rig and the semi rock-crawling setup 55 or so is about all she'll do throught the rough stuff... I seriousl also need deeper gears too... I'm 4:88's right now and third gear is about a yawn in the desert with the 37's.

I also moved the rear shackle mount to BELOW the frame, ALA CJ7... and have a 1" lift shackle out back, and its sitting somewhat level. I don't have any pics of it wheeling really on this comp, but here are a couple pics:

One of the best SUA mods I did was to flip my ubolts like this.

Took my old u-bolt plate, welded some round stock to it (recycled u-bolts) on either side to let is sit on the axle tube. Then I took some 1/2" flat stock and ground 2 channels in it for the u-bolts to sit and drill a hole for the spring pin, then grinded 2 ramps on either end.... Easy parcheesee and way cheaper than buying a kit. It slides over stuff WAY easier now.

when ever i actually start building the tj i'm going to go leaf springs in the rear... i've been tossing around the idea of going SUA and doing some revolvers or something to that effect... just haven't decided yet... it's that or SOA with a traction bar to prevent axle wrap... with the traction bar i was going to figure out the numbers for a 4 link but only use one link for the bar...

I will play. Nothing too hardcore since when these pics were taken it was still my DD.
Specs: 3.5" BDS springs, booms out back, revolvers up front (I know what your going to say but they work well in my setup), 33's (soon to be 35's if my beadlocks ever get here), flat fenders up front, F-250 front shock tower mounts and 36" long BDS shocks up front.

I need to flip my u-bolts for the time being like it was shown above. I like how low and stable it is on the trails. Never once have I felt unsafe or like I was going to roll. The biggest thing holding me back from going to a 3 link front and 4 link rear with coilovers is the funds. I want to maintain the current ride height, do a homebrew highline fender setup up front and put in a bigger rear wheel well opening out back. That should give me enough room to stuff 37's. I don't want to go any bigger than 37's mainly because I still want to have fun on the harder trails and make it a challenge to better myself as a driver so I have to think about line choices, what will work, what won't, all of that happy crap. Ok enough of my ramblings, here are some pics.

My TJ is SUA in the front and SOA in the rear. It does see some street time with no sway bars so the bigger arch in the springs helps to stiffen up the front a little.

As for going SOA or linking it...no. It was already linked once and I was not so impressed. The front is SUA for a reason so I will not change it any time soon. Jeep sees mostly mud and trails, not a lot of big rocks.

Well I'm selling out guys, well only 50%. I broke a rear leaf in January, and put a pair 4.5" BDS in the rear. Still kept it SUA. But on memorial weekend I broke a front leaf. Don't exactly know how but it wasn't in a good spot of the trail. So I drove it out with a broken leaf without winching.

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/5765/p1050152ex0.jpg

So instead of putting in some new leafs, I'm linking the front. It's time for something new. But I'll remain SUA in the rear. I'll see how it flexes, if it needs more flex I'll put revolvers in the rear.

Im starting to sell out. The main reason for my front SOA was because of the Front HP60 out of a 89 F350. The rear will get similar treatment as well as move the axle back 8 inches. The front was moved forward 3.1 inches in this configuaration. The front 44 I had in it earlier(Factory SUA from a 83 J20) just couldn't handle the terrain:

My rig is down right now, so I was wheeling my wife's spring-under rig on the weekend - cutting trails on some private land.

It's nice and low and all - but I still managed to lay it over. 85' Seven with YJ tub, 2.5" RE springs and 34's. No damage.

Running an 86 CJ and it's sua. 4.5 RE lift with a one bodylift poison spyder fenders TJ flares and a little sawsall work to fit 36" Irocks. The rig has done Jackhammer and Sledgehammer, the Rubicon four times, Fordyce many times, Hollister Hills a few times. On these trails I was leading and following rigs that were linked or soa and running up to 40's. I feel that running a sua rig with all of the junk hanging under it i.e. (spring plates, shock mounts, sway bar mounts) makes it more challenging and you a better driver. And just so you know I also have a linked buggy on Rocks with a big block 49's and the whole nine yards, put I still have alot of fun in my little old CJ. Will post pics of both ASAP.

The driver. :grinpimp:

No a good lift. Don't settle for a cheap lift. Pro-comp makes some really stiff leafs, So does BDS. I have BDS in the rear of mine for a year now and they are still stiff as hell. Skyjacker makes a nice soft, flexy lift, 4" lift. Thats what I had last time and it worked great.

matts88yj
01-05-2009, 03:34 PM
I don't really agree with BDS making really stiff springs. Flex them out really well and get a few hard wheeling trips on them. Have the same set on for the past 6 years and it's still doing well. Also shock selection is key. Crap shocks will make it a shitty ride.

JeffsJeep04
01-05-2009, 04:03 PM
Yup, the RE 2.5" kit is really nice. I ran Doetsch DT3000 shocks too, loved 'em. I've had a few buddies run BDS, the lifetime springs are a huge plus.

If you wanted a nice overall performance from a leaf spring setup look into first having the right length shocks and a good quality shock like FOA's or Fox's. Yeah they might cost more now but it will be worth it. Just my .02.

Wow! There are some sweet flexy SUA rigs here. I recently had Phil from SillyFab work on my rig, I had a few cracks in the frame and wanted to clock the D300. Anyways, while he had it I found some Deaver YJ springs. So one thing led to another and now I have a moderately flexy SUA Cj7. Here's a few pics from the first shakedown run since the spring swap.

I still need to replace the rear shocks as they are limiting flex up and down. Front could droop slightly more, but front driveline yoke angle is almost maxed.

Thanks to this thread for the inspiration to stay SUA.

No Phil. Yours is rock solid. It's my spare shaft now. I went and bought an extreme slip, Glad I did, the new springs need the extra slip. The shaft that broke was on a '73 K10, and a u-joint let go in the front CV. The Jeep has been great! Thanks.

I've been running a Rough Country 4" lift for 2+ years now and have wheeled it pretty good. With the Nth Degree zig-Zag bar I installed I can get some pretty damn good droop out of the rear. I've got a great picture of my rig all flexed out at Twin Peaks in Tahoe, really shows what it can do with the ZZ bar unpinned. I'll see if I can dig it up...

And I do have plans to go SOA someday... If I can ever get caught up on all my BS. Will ditch the RC leafs for some RE's, and probably ditch the ZZ bar as well.

I was leery after buying mine, because when I did buy it I didn't know much, was stoked about getting Christmas money and took the plunge. Rear springs sagged out on me but I got new ones under warranty about 4-5 months ago. the new ones flex just as well. I've never had a problem stuffing my tires, even when I was on 33's with the lift, shackles, TJ flares and 1" BL I still couldn't keep them from rubbing :smokin: 35's rub up front, a highline someday will fix that...

you know... to each there own. I ran a SUA set up for years. I jeep worked just great. When I broke my axles I went with an SOA set up. To be fair both have pros and cons. My jeep rides a lot softer now with my SOA set up. However, if someone thinks by building a rig with an SOA it will be cheaper they are wrong. Plus with the SOA you have to worry about axle wrap. If I had to do it all over again. I would still SOA my rig but that is just me.
