: Stock 65 gas tank.
Evergreen12 12-18-2007, 01:31 PM I just picked up a 65 fj40 from a buddy. It's got a sbc 350 and th350 trans. w/ stock xfer case. It's sprung over with stock springs and axles. It has been sitting for about 2 years and the gas tank was left open and had water and bad gas in it. I am using the POR-15 stuff to clean and seal it. Anyway, on to my question. The fuel line from the tank was coming off of the left side. There was a plug @ the bottom of the tank. Does that side conn. draw from the bottom of the tank and the plug in the bottom is just a drain?, or is it supposed to draw from the bottom and was plumbed incorrectly?
orangefj45 12-18-2007, 04:18 PM bottom plug is the tank drain, side fitting is the pickup.

Thank you, that's what I was thinking. Getting that tank cleaned up is a real PITA!! I got a new gas cap from Spector but it doesn't seem to fit quite right. It'll seal, but it doesn't center itself right and therefore misses the stops easily and keeps spinning. But it'll keep the water out and the gas in!!!

65SWB45 12-23-2007, 08:49 PM If they sold you a stock Toyota cap, that shouldn't happen. The Toyota cap fits very snuggly.....as long as you remember to put it on! :shaking:[Lone Star Roundup 2005] The Toyota caps I run on my '65 have maybe an 1/8 inch overlap, but I'm thinking even less.
Maybe there is something wrong with your filler neck?
Before you waste good POR 15 on the tank, have a radiator shop do a pressure test on it. Those tanks get pretty porous at the seams after 40 years.

I don't see any markings on the cap that would lead me to believe it's a stock Toyota piece. It seals tight, I guess that's the most important part. As for the POR-15, I did it today and it was no fun. I followed the directions to a tee but I'm not so sure it worked all that well. I guess I'll find out in 5 days after it's fully cured and I can put fuel in it.
On a lighter note, I rigged up a gas can today and put a new yellow top in it and it fired right up. Not bad for having sat for two years. Now I need to do something about the brakes. The driver's front is leaking fluid everywhere and the pedal goes to the floor. I don't really want to waste any money on this front axle as I'd really like to switch to disks. I'm having a really hard time deciding whether I want to find a newer LC axle for the front w/disks, or put a 60 front and 14 rear in it.
65SWB45 12-27-2007, 07:37 AM The cap should have a little 'acorn' embossed in the center, like the old school hubcaps. Very distinctive.
As for the tank, all I can say is good luck. If it doesn't work, it's gonna be harder to solder on with that junk stuck to the inside.
As for the axles, unless you're stubborn, or a diehard [both of which I've been accused of] I'd switch to something else. FJ60 axles are fairly easy to come by, will give you a little added width for rock crawling stability, front disc stock with wide knuckle pattern for easy hi-steer adaptability, and has axle mounted parking brake in the back.

Evergreen12 12-27-2007, 09:10 AM Definitely no acorn embossed in the cap. Some one had already applied some kind of crap to the seams all around. Would have made it very difficult to get the solder joints clean enough to re-solder. For what they want for a steel tank, I'll just go to a fuel cell if it leaks.
FJ60 axles sound like a good option with a little more width and disks. How much wider are they? I've been searching the boards around here but haven'e seen any FJ axles.
my64fj40 12-28-2007, 09:45 AM I got this for my 64 from SOR several weeks ago, sealed up fine and sounds like what 65SWB45 is describing. $9 IIRC.
BTW, the POR 15 kit is a PITA but worth it.

Evergreen12 01-01-2008, 12:57 PM Well, I got the tank finished and reinstalled and did a tune-up on the engine. The tank is holding fine so far and it seems to run pretty good. The oil was BLACK, and the plugs were the worst I've ever seen!
