I'm to the point of giving the Cruiser a test drive but now the PS is not being power <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

The PS box is off a mid 70's Scout II. It is of questionalable condition. The fluid that came out when I pulled the box was fairly clean. The box had the usual road grim on the case but nothing in the fittings.

The PS pump is an 89 Camaro pump. It worked about 2 years when I stopped using the Cruiser. During that 2 years, the PS lines were open for bugs and such to get into... no water though.

Neither the pump or the box is making a lot of noise <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

How should I go about checking which is FUBAR? I plan to send the box to Lakerat for hydraulic assist work but would like to find out if the PS pump needs to be replaced at the same time.

Sounds like the pump is just bypassing all the time. The valve in the back of hte pump is probably stuck.

yea if the box were bad you probibly wouldnt be able to turn in one direction or the other. thats what happend to me anyway, wouldnt turn to the left like it was stripped out in that direction <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Get the front wheels off the ground and work the steering through the motions with out the engine running. If you can turn lock to lock, the box should not be the problem.

I can turn the wheels when the they are off the ground with no effort... on the ground, even with the 17 inch steering wheel, it is worse than manual steering <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

I have tried swapping out the valve.... unfortunately, no luck.

I changed the high pressure hose because I thought the small kink in the line might have been a problem... not it <IMG SRC="smilies/frown.gif" border="0">

Is there an "easy" way to check the pressure on the pump?

Is there an "easy" way to pull the pulley off this pump? GM put their heads up their ass when they designed the TBI setup... you have to pull the pulley before you can pull the pump <IMG SRC="smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0"> And the fawking thing is pressed on <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">

I dont know your set up , but is there any chance you have the pressure line on the return of the box? Did you reverse the line by chance?

It is a Scout II box and fortunately, when I pulled the box, I kept track of which line was which <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0"> Plus, it had the return hose barb left on it when I finally pulled it out of the scout <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

But, to verify, the large fitting closest to the engine is the pressure line, correct?

Sounds to me like your box has got trash in it and it's plugged up the ports in the spool valve.
