Will an AMC 231 bolt directly in place of a 249 on a 93 ZJ? any mods other than exchange the input shaft?

I did a conversion for a guy a couple of months ago. I ended up pulling the whole panatary and putting it in the 231. Worked great. The speedo gear even swapped out and bolted right in. Had to adjust the linkage to get it to shift thru all the gears though. You can get the right lever and floor plate to match the 231 shift pattern, but the factory set up worked fine.

I took a 98 TJ 231 and put it in my 98 ZJ with 249. It was a direct bolt in for the case. I went to the dealer ship and bought the linkage for a 93 ZJ with 231 ($20) and the interior bezel for 93 ZJ with 231 ($12). Once I was done it looked stock, as if the Jeep came with a 231.
Since yours is a 93, look around for a used 231 out of a ZJ. Some 4.0's came with 231's in 93 and 94.
