If it is your going to have a harder time than ever to covince the higher ups due to the media attention. But if you get enough people informed and take a stand anything is possible.Maybe post this if you already have not in the land use forum, also start looking around in here for people in your area and start pm ing them on whats going on ,alot of people dont usually go into these forums and the more people that know the better chances are.Letters are also a big plus start sending them everywhere and get a hold of all local clubs .:)

Ken did not mention this to me

It has been forwarded thru the FOE Myspace page.

We got until Jan 4th, so we should do a big push for it right after X-mas

Still should be posted in land-use. I would do it, but I am about to start drinking....

Kurt, between beers, check your spam filter junk box for this header:

[Friends-of-High-Lakes] General Membership Meeting Notice

because you are definitely subscribed the the listserv (just checked again)

so whitelist [Friends-of-High-Lakes] !!!!

Oh, heck, here it is again, in case your filters didn't catch it, or someone else didn't get it either:

Hello, Friends,

Because the deadline for input to the draft plan by Lassen National
Forest on the uses of The High Lakes is January 15, 2008 we need to
inform the general public of the plan and what they need to do to be
able to give their input.

The draft is 10 pages, plus a time-line chart, it is in need of
explanation and interpretation and therefore a presentation is being
planned to do this.

We have the use of the
Paradise Veterans Hall
6550 Skyway, Paradise;
Corner of Elliot and Skyway
6:30 - 9:30
JANUARY 4, 2008

Please plan on attending, and bring your family, neighbors, friends, and
anyone you can think might be interested in The High Lakes, whether they
be 4 wheelers, quad or motorcycle riders, fishermen, hikers, hunters,
photographers, campers, geocachers, or just love the area as we do.

Here are links to the draft plan and the time-line chart, for your prior
study if you haven't yet seen it:

http://www.friendsofthehighlakes.com/draftplan/Draft_High_Lakes_Task_List.xls

Friends of The High Lakes Steering Committee has met and identified and
prioritized at least 6 areas of the draft plan that need changes and
improvements. Please consider other changes, both problems and
solutions that are important to you, and bring that to the meeting.

We can arrange seating for up to 400, and will have a multimedia
presentation.

This is very important, so please join us in getting the word spread
about this meeting, and please plan on attending and bringing friends.

Ken

If it is your going to have a harder time than ever to covince the higher ups due to the media attention.

Where the family got lost was WAY before The High Lakes, but on one of the roads leading there. They got about 1 1/2 miles from the pavement end, parked, and walked two miles looking for a fir ... like there wasn't one every few feet.

Were they to go towards The High Lakes, they'd have needed to go another 15 miles to even get to the beginning edge of the OHV area.

Kind of like saying they got lost 1 1/2 miles out of Georgetown, and someone saying it was The Rubicon Trail.

Hey Ken,

I won't be able to make the meeting, skimmed the white paper, but it's a lot with the RTMP deadline upcoming.

Do you have a list of bullets you would like specific comments on? Let me know where they can be found and I will make some comments.

Thanks,

John Arenz

Hello, John, (and anyone else who would please send a letter ):
Comments are to be directed to Dave Erwin by mail by
January 15, 2008.

David C. Erwin,
District Recreation Officer
P.O. Box 767
Chester, CA 96020-0767

Yes, we do. Our Steering Committee met and determined these 6 items are PRIORITY for needed changes to the draft plan.

The top 6 priorities for needed changes were:

1. Reopen 616 to 614 to 611 routes (from Plumas N.F. into Grassy Lake)

2. Reopen 519 from Spring Valley to Campbell Cow Camp as two track

3. Re-work and make possible improved number of campsites at Spring Valley, Long Lake and Campbell Lakes

4. Reposition or reroute, repair what is necessary to keep west
shore of Long Lake open

5. Raise the limit of 12 heartbeats / 4 vehicles at some / most
camp sites (this includes pets, too)

6. Work to eliminate seasonal closures, eliminate gates

Here is what the plan DOES do, and with help can be vastly improved:

1 & 1a & 2 below will be cured by 1 & 2 above
3 & 3a below will be cured by 4 & 5 above

1) It totally focuses on the traditional dirt superhighway, and does not
address the southern entrances or even the abundance of trails and campsites there as a way to disperse people.

1a) There are loops, they are just not open right now. It needs to clarify
that the dead-ends are caused by current closures.

2) It does not address driving loops.

3) Looks like it finally gets rid of the church group.

3a) It also gets rid of your favorite campsite.

4) It says "by 2009", not in 2009, so perhaps it could still be sooner.

All in all, Dave is to be commended on a fine initial plan. It sounds
like the start of something workable.

We are indeed fortunate that we have a Recreation Officer write this plan, and not Resources or -ologists!

But all of that said... we still have to bombard him with comments, and let him know full-on, that while the plan is close, it needs WORK (which he knows we are willing and able to do).

It also is one hella' lot closer to livable, than it was BEFORE FOTHL began negotiations and constant contact with them. PROOF that Friends of ... WORKS! And not to count on anyone else to get 'er done.

John, THANKS for asking.

Perfect Ken, just what I needed.

Any chance there is an email address where comments can be sent to save postage and hassle, or is it better to send hard copies?

So, i guess, to simplify for us (me), there is a meeting on the 4th, that is being directed by the recreation department responsible for the plan to manage The High Lakes, and at this meeting they will be taking input and hearing what the public has to say about it. Right?

I plan on being there, and i am sure i'll be able to drag my brother along.

This meeting is being put on by Friends of The High Lakes to inform the public what the draft plan by USFS, Almanor District Office, says is their idea of what Recreation and camping in The High Lakes will be.

After you read or hear what their plan is, you will be asked to write letters as to any changes you think should be made in their plan.

If you don't understand their plan, and present intelligent replies as to change(s), you will be accepting THEIR plan.

We will have a multimedia presentation, and a Q & A after, and let you know how to write letters that will have to be read and from a combination of their plan and YOURS (ours), a better plan may be possible.

I have invited the Recreation Officer who largely wrote the plan, but I'd be surprised he wants to see up to 400 unhappy campers.

If you haven't read the plan it is here:

http://www.friendsofthehighlakes.com...N_STRATEGY.doc

http://www.friendsofthehighlakes.com..._Task_List.xls

Round up both of your friends and get there!
