Would someone please measure the physical diameter of a 35" and a 37" tyre for me and post the results. I'm in Australia and I'm a bit sus on whether 35 is actually 35". I have some tyres that come in at 970mm or 38.1". That measurement is off the vehicle and so would probably drop an inch or so on the vehicle. Thanks in advance. Al.:p

Not to be too general, but most tires actually measure approxiamately 1" smaller than stated. So most 35's are actually 34" when mounted and most 37's measure very close to 36" when mounted.

Plus it varies from brand to brand, air pressure etc.
Bias plys tend to be closer to the stated size, radials tend to be the ones that average 1" less or more.
You may do better if you have a specific brand in mind

Thanks guys,
These 38's I have come off another vehicle (Oka) I have just sold and I'm thinking of throwing them in with the deal as I suspect they'll be too big for the H2.
I can't use mine as a template as it's 3700km's away in a workshop, waiting to be picked up, bugger.
I would keep them untill I pick up the H2 but the guy who bought the Oka lives 3700 K's away and shipping is expensive, considering I'm going to deliver the Oka. I'll be leaving to deliver on the 26/12 because I'm under time constraint though work commitments, that's why I thought I'd get advice off the forum.
I agree tyre pressure makes a difference but it wouldn't be too great.
It's just that these tyres of mine look almost what you guy's would call a 40" In our sizes they are 11.00 x 16" and are Michelin XZL's. This means the sidewalls are 11" high and the tread is 11.5" wide. So when one adds all the figgures, namely 11 + 11 + 16 = 38" and this is also the physical height in reality. That's the part I want to know from the American mfg tyres.
I think I'll get rid of them and purchase some 37" from the States, the other issue is the Michy's are rated for approx. 4300 lb a tyre, a bit on the stiff side.
Thanks for your replies.

Steve is right -- I have 37" Irok radials on my hummer. Though I like their performance, I was dissapointed when I measured them to be 36" at full inflation (or at least as full as my ctis can get them -- 50psi). My previous tires were the 38" tsl-sx bias plys. I loved them offroad but they beat me up on the road (and literally fell apart at 6000 miles). I think they were just under 38", maybe 37 3/4"?

It really depends on the tire and you can find this on almost all tire company web pages. Tires like BFG are typically less than the stated size, but based on the government rounding they round it to the next higher number. Tires like Super Swamper & Michelin have always tried to be exactly what they say (or a little more), so they are typically the size stated on the wheel width recommended without any load on them. A narrower rim will cause a tire to have a greater diameter at pressure than a wider rim. So a 37 X 12.50 X 17 on a 10" wheel and one mounted on a 8" wheel will vary in height. A similar tire such as a 37 X 12.50 X 15 will have a greater variation in height since the tire has much more sidewall for flexing.

Guys,
Thanks for the info. I sold the tyres with the Oka which I delivered over the Christmas break. I'll get some new tyres when I pick up the H2. I'll run the standard tyres for a while until I decide what I want as an offroad set.
Will keep you posted.
Al :)
