ok, my TPI in my jeep is running really bad, when you start it up she idles high at like 1500-2000 range(the timing is at 0*) and when the rpms are under 1500 she is spitting and poping and smoking black smoke, almost like it is loading up wiht fuel.....now i changed the Pickup coil about 5 months ago when i was having surging problems, so i don't think that is causing it...but what do you guys think???

Get a scanner. Only way to diagnose drivability problems when there are no codes.........I assume you have no codes. That could be a few things...........TPS adjustment..............Manifold Air Temp sensor..............coolant temp sensor.............etc. Something is telling it to enrich the mixture.............does it run fine above the 1500 rpm you mentioned? Better or worse when cold/hot..........more info please.

www.autoxray.com has scanners.........you can buy them for $150ish at any Schucks/Kragen/Checker. Well worth every penny.

Are you going into closed loop at all? I assume you tested for codes? Obviously, no scanner is necessary for just the codes.

There's a test for the O2 sensor, which I'd do if you're not going into closed loop.

By the way, here's a link for all the GM codes for now or future reference...............

ok here is what i got...

it is in closed loop....

don't have egr so don't worry about that

but these are the code errors...
21...TPS volts high
22...tps volts low

42....HEI module failure
43...knock sensor signal
44....O2 sensor lean

ok, so the main problem looks like my HEI module...should that be the first thing i change???

HEI sounds like a good way to start. I'd also test the TPS, you want between 0 and 5 volts, depending on the position...or is that Ohms? I can't ever remember...

You say your timing is at O, is that with the check timing plug disconnected? I run my base timing at 6 with the plug disconnected. When it is connected the ECM holds it around 12-15. TPS voltage at idle should be at .52volts and almost 5v at WOT.

I would clear the codes and crank it find out which one throws first and go from there..

Good Luck.. :D
