I see problems with any regular idiot being able to make it out there now. I think Boone Road was out "Gate Keeper". You really had to want to make that drive to get out there.

We'll see.

I agree completely

All that just happened is we increased our number of vandalized/stolen shit from camp and the number of dumped cars.

Did they fix the apron off of 247?

I do agree with that. My feelings are the more accessable Means is to the average asshole, the more assholery we will end up with:(

However on the other hand, when the average motorhome is gettin buried in the road something needs to be done.

THey paved the road into El Mirage a little while ago. It was pretty dicey for even the short stretch to the main staging area with all the dust and yahoos. I have to say it is a little more civilized. The BLM now hangs out near the end to keep a lid on the a-holes better than in the past.

The first thing I thought of was that it's easier for emergency equipment to get out there, which seemed to be called out every big weekend.
I wonder if they had any part in it?

im sure that turkey week 07 had something to do with it when they tried to medivac that guy out on Fri night!

Chopper couldn't land because of to much dust and a possible brown out. They had to take the guy out in a Ambulance which bounce all over on the way out:(

yea I saw that also looked like the chopper tried to land like 3 times. Man what a slow bumpy ride that had to be. Glad the road is better but I would also like to see some pics. if the road gets paved....maybe too many people will go down that road...its bound to happen sooner or later

I doubt they will pave it, if it is hard packed dirt it will wash board up pretty quick and be like bessimer mine road(bad), if they kept it in the wash it will return to sand, eather way enjoy it while it's nice, at least thay are spending our green sticker money for OHV, maybe they will build bathrooms next like at Cougar Buttes, thats progress for ya

It's about time. I agree on not wanting it to be easier for many to get out there, but I don't really think it was much of a deterent.

It will be real nice while it lasts, it's a bitch taking so much time to get down to camp after turning off of 247.

12-25-2007, 06:56 PM
If it was the county that did it, you guys have nothing to worry about as it will be back to whoops in no time as they normally just roll it and don't add water to get it to an optimum water percentage before compaction and basically wasting money as it won't last. We just need to fight for the 'make my day' law as fawkers won't want to take your shit if they know that you can shoot them legally after steeling your shit.

I am sorry but I interpret this as meaning that I should enjoy the stress of driving my motorhome down a bad road where everything falls out of the cabinets, while the thing rattles itself to death and trying to keep enough momentum up to prevent getting stuck because it is easy for "undesireables" to access the lakebed as well?

I believe everyone has equal access to public lands...unfortunately even the criminal element. I lock my crap up, if somebody wants it, they will have it. That's life. I will never deny any citizen access to public lands.

Are you kidding me??? Everyone does have the right to public land. I don't believe that everyone needs equal access to it though. If driving down a bumpy road is too much stress for you than maybe you shouldn't be going up there to begin with. I don't know about you but my camper has locks on the cabinets to prevent them from popping open.

Now that I think about it, I sometimes have a hard time getting up back door. Maybe they should bulldoze it and make an even grade so "everyone has equal access" to it. Give me a break......

Maybe you need to consider the difference between Boone road and Backdoor trail. Since 1 is county maintained and 1 is not. It is a law enforcement emergency access thing not a keep the lake bed free of trash, smooth ride for motorhomes thing. Nobody wants trash or theives out there but Boone road has little to do with either.

I don't have problem with it being graded from time to time, but I would prefer it to never be paved.

Maybe my imagination is getting the better of me in my old age, but once it's got asphalt on it; It's not too hard to visualize, a Ranger Station, with a gate, and a bunch of supervision by "the man". And that's the whole freaking point of being out there, is to get away from "big brother" and have a little fun, and not worry about looking over your shoulder wondering if you are going to get a ticket -or worse.

What do you figure they are doing for culverts where the washes cross Boone?

Concreted in corrugated drain pipes or just concrete culverts? We saw some rebar at the detour they made at the big wash just after the left, and then it was gone.

btw- I know where there is a slightly used toy hauler for cheap if you're interested. Might need a tiny bit of work though.

Yeah, that was a mess. Anyone know if they got it moved off the road yet?

One of the guys we ran into on the Sledge cluster on Sunday said it blew apart before it caught fire. Supposedly from a fuel leak that eventually exploded when the fumes reached the fridge pilot.

We saw them haul the remains of the toy hauler on a flat bed semi across the lake bed, with the quads on another flat bed truck. That's an amazing big black patch on the road.

Boone road was nice, 30 mph in my camper. Since they're putting culverts in the gulley, it looks like it's getting paved all the way to the lake bed. Only problem will be dealing with pot holes in the future, depending on how well they maintain it, but the drive in will sure be nice for a good while.

Who knows what else they have planned......................

I don't know what you'd like to name what they did, but it's more than you describe. They compacted the sand base. They they laid down fabric and graded a fairly healthy layer of road base on top of that.

If they didn't plan on some sort of paving like slurried road base or AC, then why the rebar to build culverts?

I think that graded is a much better name than paved. However, I should have been more descriptive of the actual work done. You are exactly right.

The guy I spoke to on 12/26 as they were working on the road made no mention of doing any work other than the current project. Is this talk of additional road base or paving anything other than supposition? Does anyone have any evidence of these plans?

Bessemer Mine Road was improved with a similar (possibly the exact) process and that road is a nightmare of washboard and the fabric is showing and flapping in the dirt, a desert road in the process of being reclaimed. Means, as bad as it was, was more enjoyable to drive than Bessemer Mine.

Why not use rebar if you are going to the expense of putting in culverts? Wouldn't that be good construction practice?

I will see the road on Saturday when I head out for the KOH Volunteer's meeting. It will be interesting to see how far they have pushed it and if the project looks to be complete.

Sorry, I was implying that they were going to put in concrete culverts based on the rebar and I couldn't fathom them doing that for an easily deteriorated road surface.

If they are just going to leave the compacted road base in place and call it finished, it won't be long before it's crap. It was already worse than the compacted sand from the small amount of traffic it had seen when we left after the New Year run.

On the road for the Hammer's in a couple of hours. It'll be nice if Boone is still smooth.

It's not that big a deal now that I have a Dmax and enclosed trailer. A couple of years back I had a '76 class C RV. Kept waiting for the front overhang on the RV to fall of every trip down that road.

Jeff Knoll

I hear you Bob, I got into a tangle in my old class A trying to get to an ARCA comp with a 3 year old. Towing a trailer and a guy that was coming out refused to use the pull out. We got stuck together like two dogs humping at the tops of our rigs. That was a pain with a baby by myself.

I hope they do not pave it because Bissimier (sp) road sucks far greater then Boone. I'll take the sand over all the pot holes anyday.

I get what you are saying Camo.

What I don't understand why is everyone complaining about it now when it was in the travel management planning stage 2 years ago??? I specificallly remember Camo telling me at tin bender jambo last year that he didn't think paving would ever happen. He asks whats next, blasting the waterfall on wrecking ball? Well, has anyone looked at the final TMP for the area to figure out if that could happen, cuz it could if we don't start paying attention to the details. I know with some people reading this thread I'm preaching to the choir, but I'm hoping that it will make others think, because even if someone thinks someone else is doing something about it, it doesn't mean that someone else actually is. Get it? Get involved with land use, its the only way to keep things open, or in this case, not paved.

I just got back from the hammers and they will not pave that road. That is the similar thing they do in Northern New Mexico to the oil field roads. But the only problem is its easier for your typicall 16 year old shits lookin for a place to hold a Keger.

Any one see the Ice cream truck on Saturday afternoon out on the lakebed?!

I don't know, it is any easier for them to have a kegger than it is to pull their POS 2wd Dodge Shadows out there and burn it to the ground like they did about 5 years ago.

Truth be told, the road was nicer then than the "paved" section is now.

Tell the truth, it wasn't really an ice cream truck, it was a van with a lot of ground clearance. :p

I was there for the KOH volunteer meeting when it circled the camp. The one I saw was a blue van. Was there another?

First it's easier access. Second it's houses along the road. Then the last thing is the residents don't want anymore off roading in the area just like Truck Haven Hills.

I can deal with some ice cream. The truck can stay.

It was an ice cream van, not a mobile tittay bar.

I wonder if there is a permit or buisness license available for a mobile titty bar...what do you think that would cost?

I was thinking that a Taco/Breakfast Burrito Wagon would be profitalble.

Depends on if the local kickbacks are cash or trade.

I only care when it takes 2 hours to get from the first right turn after the sand wash to the highway because all the toy haulers are getting stuck.

I was thinking the same thing... Alcohol, Fire, Ice Cream... well the next logical step is paying to see titties.

And I don't see what the big deal is about grading the road. From a safety standpoint, with the number of people going out to the lakebed, it needed to happen. When one of those 'kids from Irvine' crash on their ATV's, and die because an ambulance couldn't drive to the lake bed, then the BLM gets sued, and they close the road... But it isn't like I wasn't able to drive my volvo sedan out to the lakebed before.

That's what the ATV road is for.

I think they should tear the road up and make it so only a 4x4 can reach Means lake. Camp in a tent like men or wheel till your done and leave.

I love this BBS and all of its diversity.

I do that on the Rubicon, Fordyce, Dusy where the weather is nice. The nights in JV can suck. If you only own a tent never switch to something more comfortable. It is a bitch to go back.

No shit? Is it the fact that your tent must lay down flat on your sleeping bag because of the 100mph winds, or is the because you wake up to all of your water frozen solid, or the fact that you can never get all of the sand off of you because once you try to clean yourself the dust devils come along and sand blast you immediately after?

I think this is Camo's point, the extreme nature of the beast is what keeps the kids and Disney Land.

I remember leaving the lake bed at 2:30am to go find a hotel room in Lucerne Valley (found it on the internet or something?). We found the hotel that night, once we walked into our rooms we realized that we should have just slept in our trucks on the lake bed (they SUCKED).

I am not nearly as concerned about Boone road myself but it is sure fun to read about everyone's different opinions and how excited they get! :flipoff2::flipoff2:
