: Tire Coverage in CA? CHP?
Spank 06-28-2002, 12:34 PM Yes I've Searched! :flipoff2:
I've been wanting to flat-fender my YJ since the fenders are mangled now anyways.
Since so many of you are CA residents, how often do the CHP get all pissy about tire coverage issues? You been stopped for tire coverage?
I drive my heep everyday a grueling 2 miles to work :p , so I'm not too worried about cops, I just don't want to be harrassed all the time.
My YJ is running 33's that stick out about 2"s already. In case anyone cares.
Yep, I'm new here so :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
The Rockslut 06-28-2002, 12:43 PM Just drive it. My commute is 10 miles each way everyday.
Rerard 06-28-2002, 01:01 PM I guess it kind of depends where you are.. but in sac area they dont seem to give a fawk.
poppycock 06-28-2002, 01:09 PM they looked it up when i went to fix my ticket. they can not stick out past the fender at all. the cop used a yard stick from the fender to the tire to make sure that they were in there. true this cop was a total bitch but it's what they found when they looked it up.

That isnt so true....Last year I had 8 fix it tickets for tires and mudflaps on my dodge!!
It all depends on how big and how far your tires stick out!
Spank 06-28-2002, 01:15 PM  Those 40" boggers look like bagels.

damn that thing's perty!!
edit: until my rig was stricken with death wobble I drove it alot, and my only mudflap ticket was on the sand highway in pismo beach svra!!
M.Martian 06-28-2002, 02:16 PM I've been driving my suzuki like this since about last September and haven't been hassled about the tires. They stick out about 3 inches past the stock flares.
Until a couple months ago my commute was about 10 miles each way. Now I have no commute since they laid me off.

My rig still has DW and i drive it daily. Makes for fun in the morning and afternoon commute. I tell you what, people will make ROOM for a full width YJ when the 40's are shaking left to right violently and i am looking straight ahead like nothings happening.
Oh yeah Aggro........................................:flip off2:
HighToy 06-28-2002, 02:33 PM about half of my tire sticks out of the fender and I haven't had any problems since I put them on about 2yrs ago.

I love that stuff, you're looking/driving like nothing is awry and the oncoming traffic is eyes bugged out, freaking out. My death wobble is so bad I can't go over 25mph and that would suck on hwy 50 trying to get to work!! and yep-:flipoff2:

You should see the look when the Dodge starts doing that!!

We should put a DW caravan together and drive across sacramento. It would be a 5mph parade of some of this areas most pissed off rigs that cant be safely driven at highway speeds but are. :D Sorta like the special Olympics for 4wds
Gozuki 06-28-2002, 04:32 PM 3rd fix it ticket in 2 yrs:(
GRMhick 06-28-2002, 04:48 PM from what i know, the tires cant stick out past the fender at all, and all trucks must have mud flaps covering 3/4 of the tire.. or at least from what i have heard, but could be wrong.

Actually what it says is that you can have any tire sticking out past the fenders, if you to there must be a mud flap that will cover the top 2/3's of the tire and be as wide as the tire width.
You dont have to put flares over the top of the tire, just a flap that will cover the top of the tire as you look from behind the vehicle at the tire.
And some tickets have been given and they try to check that it is a non correctable violation.....THIS IS FALSE, they can never give you a non correctable violation for mud flaps.................make sure you remember that......
Also, the law only states that you have to put flaps on the rear tires.....not the front ones too!
Oh i got a fix it ticket just past placerville in the zuk.....the cop got all mad cause my tires were sticking out 12" past my fenders......so:flipoff2:
Drunk Guy 06-28-2002, 05:25 PM I drive mine every day, if you have they dont care too much about the front it is the rear that they will give you shit about. If you have mud flaps then it shouldn't be a problem. Now with your 33's you should have nothing to wory about. You can still run your flares you just cut them also. Don't wory about it just do it.
drtfun4x 06-28-2002, 05:36 PM this is what I found
Vehicle Code Section 27600
No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford a dequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread.
This section does not apply to those vehicles exempt from registration , trailers and semitrailers having an unladen weight of under 1500 pounds, or any vehicle manufactured and first registerd prior to January 1, 1971, having an unladen weight of under 1500 pounds.
I found this at www.leginfo.ca.gov
:)
RocnWilly 06-28-2002, 08:08 PM careful guys u know how Murphy's law goes. i asked Gozuki if he ever got pulled over for his tires sticking out and he was pulled over that night on his way home from my house. that sucks.
:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
u think the cops would have better things to do and bigger fish to fry.

Got a pic of how bad they stick out? Do you have flaps?
Some of these Camarillo police are just fix-it nazi's. I got 2 fix-its on Las Posas for a cracked windshield and covered lisence plate (tube bumper covered bottom half of numbers). Drove it like that for about a year though :D

I put flaps on, and even took off those 6" wide flares (cut stock flares now)
they come right of with a pin, here i forgot to take em off.
WideJ 06-29-2002, 07:49 AM I LIVE IN SAN LUIS OBISPO AND THE POLICE LOVE PULLING PEOPLE OVER FOR STUPID REASONS LIKE MUD FLAPS. I JUST GOT MY THIRD FIX-IT TICKET SIGNED OFF TWO DAYS AGO. ONCE YOU GET ONE, JUST KEEP IT WITH YOU BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET TAGGED FOR THE SAME THING TWICE WHILE YOU'RE IN THE "FIXING IT" GRACE PERIOD. SO YOU HAVE ABOUT A MONTH OF MUD-FLAP PROOF DRIVING. "I'M IN THE PROCESS OF FIXING IT OFFICER, HERES THE TICKET I GOT LAST WEEK..." I THINK THAT MADE SENSE.
OH YEAH, I RUN FULL WIDTH, THERES LIKE 8-9" OUTSIDE THE FLARES
WideJ 06-29-2002, 07:50 AM OH YEAH, ONE MORE THING.
I MADE MY FLAPS OUT OF SOME LEFT OVER TUBE AND TWO DOOR MATS THAT ARE ZIP TIED TO MY REAR BUMPER. IT GETS SIGNED OFF EVERY TIME. LOW BUDGET BABY!!
kidwired 06-29-2002, 08:35 AM 3rd one is a "failure to comply" I believe
Lil Uzi 06-29-2002, 09:14 AM "I got 2 fix-its on Las Posas for a cracked windshield and covered lisence plate " How do you think your windshield gets cracked ?
My last cracked windshield cost over $200. The deductable is $500. Thats why you cover the Fawkin tires. :rasta:

My windshield got cracked when 2 of my buddies WITH mudflaps decided to do donuts in the dirt. A huge wall of rocks came flying at me and cracked the windshield in 7 spots, and put a dent in the fender and one in the door:eek: I was so pissed I punched 2 holes in one guy's fender.:D Only cost me $125 to get the windshield replaced, and a $10 proccessing fee after the fix-its were signed off. And at that time, my tires were covered:rasta:
Gozuki 06-30-2002, 05:01 PM These are much more obvious, so I'm sure I'll be seeing the rednblue lights soon...:D
G.C. Bandit 06-30-2002, 08:02 PM I drive To cameron park every day from placervile. Havent gotten pulled over latey, or i take that back on 50 comming back from the CON, but other then that i have been pretty lucky. I just leave my mud flaps in the back seat and when i get pulled over i just say "oh im sorry officer i was in a hurry and forgot to put them on, ill do it right now, it usually always works.
RocnWilly 07-01-2002, 05:08 AM i see u got the tires mounted Gozuki. looks good. hows the golf ball balance job?
the CHP on Las Posas r real aholes. the other day a friend of mine was driving in to work and the CHP was flying in the opposite direction with no lights. scared the hell out of my friend. good thing he didn't crossover the line.

Now, if I could only get my '64 Scout down to 1500 pounds!:p
Spank 07-01-2002, 01:40 PM Kinda looks like I'm going to have to bring out the sawzall and pick up some rear TJ flares.
Maybe tonight after we fix the torn spring hanger (oops), I'll mark off the lines and get to chopping. How do I keep it from looking like it was chewed off by a rabid wolvering? Nevermind, I'll figure it out.
Thanks for the input.
(Knock on wood) I have yet to be stopped by the police, I guess they know my heep can't go too fast anyway.
ROKWALKER 07-01-2002, 02:30 PM Full width jeeps will probably be more of a target. Cops probably just want to get the eye sores off the road! :flipoff2: :flipoff2: Plus if you get out of your rig saying "dude wtf?" to the cop........chances are you're gonna get a ticket.
