: Borrow an AK flat bending jig
aloharover 12-25-2007, 03:00 PM Pretty simple, just post up here if you need one.
I will contact you as it become available.
Be advise that the more people that beat on it out of being :confused: just means the longer it takes me to rebuild it in between.
Its intended to be used with a hydraulic press, not a sledge hammer.

sinistertrucker 12-25-2007, 04:07 PM Definately gonna need one next month.
How is this going to work?
We cover shipping/beer etc?
Is there anyone else in the Nashville, TN area who needs it? I have a shop and a press, and I'm willing to coordinate with others (CMF?) who are nearby but might not have a press.
LT1CJ 12-25-2007, 05:06 PM That is awesome Pete! Great idea and very generous of you. I could use it when it becomes available. Let me know your favorite beverage of choice and Ill send some back with the jig.
usmcdoc14 12-25-2007, 06:49 PM I am in line for whenever and people in VA can use my shit if they want to do theres here as well.
20T air/hydro press makes short work of bending.
aloharover 12-25-2007, 07:26 PM It is out right now. As soon as I get it back I will contact first person that replied. if they want it, I will send it to them.
If you need flats go to Tapco or AK-Builder.

1) Please put me in line for use of the jig.
2) Why do you consider the Ak-builder flats better than Tapco`s?
3) X2 on the Nodak`s. Very nice receivers. I actually think they are worth buying over $uck1ng with bending, heat treating, welding rails, etc. Unfortunatly, I had already bought some Tapco flats before I was turned onto Nodak. :(
aloharover 01-14-2008, 12:50 PM I have the bender back in hand.
Going to replace the bolts and then send it on to the next person.

2. I just find them to be more accurate. Better quality stampings. Also the rails that Curtis includes with the flats far surpass TAPCOs.
They have the hammer pin buldge.

aloharover 01-15-2008, 03:21 PM He would still need to transfer it through an FFL.
braxton357 03-06-2008, 03:42 PM I would like to borrow it as well. Also, do you still sell the nodak recievers? If so, PM me about ordering one when you get a chance.

Oh I didn't realize you were way the hell down there... I thought you were central/northern
So, any tips on getting the best receiver out of this jig?
I bent one up this weekend, but it's just not fitting exactly right on the AK74 (yes, it is a 74 flat). I bent the top rails, and it seems like they are too low to fit the trunion grooves.
Also, on the AKBuilder flats, is there supposed to be *that* much to trim off the top rails?
I am gonna bend up the ones I have for use later, but I think I will also just order a Nodak receiver and be done with it
aloharover 05-05-2008, 07:26 AM There are two 1/8" holes in the bottom of the jig. All the flats I ever saw had these same holes. They are the center line of the flat. Use two 1/8 drill bits to line up the jig, flat, and the bottom bar.remove bits after tightening bolts on bottom bar.
I never had an issue or heard from anyone else that did.
Pete
When I lined up the jig using the alignment holes - it wasn't centered on the jig - based on several measurements I took
Oh well, I've got another 74 flat to try if I screw this one up

Ackkk.
I think you have the 'new' jig that someone made as a copy of my original. I never used it and did not measure it. Fawk!!
I checked your posts for the AK thread, this jig is *not* the same one from there.
FYI, when pressing it in - the frame was not even tight enough to fully bend the sides up against the inner form.
I'll post some pics tonight when i get home.
aloharover 05-05-2008, 11:40 AM DRM, don't use it any more. As soon as I get the original back I will send it your way.

No problem. I was kinda shocked when I saw this one, I figured you would have spent a bit more time on fit and finish.
If you send me the known "good" one, I think I can clean this one up to make it in spec to go back into circulation. Ok, by "clean up" I mean re-make several parts, but you get the idea ;)

I dunno. If he's in town and I get these plans for a jig made up we can do one as soon as everyone can make it one place and has parts. I'd volunteer my place but I have no press or welder, though those could be drug here and used. I nominate cybergeek to bring his welder. :flipoff2:

Host a class on what? Bending a flat? Or doing a complete build?
There's several of us that could do just that... some of us could even shoot the entire process in HD... :flipoff2:
muddawg95yj 05-05-2008, 05:33 PM I would be in for a build party if it was close enough... somewhere between Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville area.
Edit: If there is interest, we should start a new thread so this one doesn't get hijacked.

Long piece of steel and a hammer.
But there are some press jigs out there that will form the top rails, and they do a pretty good job of it. Some will even do stepped top rails.
TNToy 07-14-2008, 12:00 AM Long piece of steel, and then a hard-plastic deadblow directly on the rails.
Don't use a steel faced hammer directly on the rails. They need to be smooth, and not peened all to hell.

Used a regular deadblow soft-face hammer just like this:

I'm here, but this weekend I'm going back to Omaha to get the last of our things.
I am hoping to be able to bend these things up the following weekend.

Doesn't surprise me, even with the stuff mentioned before about not beating on other folks tools.
Been a while since I have seen it. Since its 'here' lets make plans for the following weekend.
Scott you want to come down?
Anyone else on the front range want to bend some receivers? maybe a mini build party?
Scott@Rockstomper 01-12-2009, 10:31 AM Weekend of the 24th?
I think I can, but it'd depend on my wife's work schedule and the daycare situation for the halfpint.

I should be able to get away for a few hours

aloharover 01-21-2009, 09:28 AM This is a bend party, but if you want to do more you are welcome. The garage is only slightly more organized then when you were last here. But I do have shelves up finally and amm starting to label boxes and put them up on the shelf.

They looked that bad when I got them - so I replaced the bottom piece that holds down the flat with new steel stock.

I should have clarified. Yes, I did mine with it too, but it doesn't get it close to square. Every yugo I've seen done in a regular jig comes out with a bowed bottom, which isn't acceptable, IMHO. It also leaves a nice gap between the bottom of the trunnion and the receiver.
As far as I'm concerned, the bent receivers I have are garbage. Hopefully the yugo jig will make a square receiver with a flat bottom, it not, I guess I'll get a Nodak Spud receiver.
Halogrinder 03-02-2009, 01:25 PM braxtons did the same thing (DPH arms jig) on the first one we did. i ended up resetting the sides that are held with the counter sunk allen screws to "down" before pressing again. it netted very straight and accurate bends. i wanted to drill all the way thru it w/ a 3/8 hole and pin it w/ some stainless rod or something, but its not my jig so its not my place to modify someone elses shit.....
but thats how i would fix it from shifting. the countersunk screws even though are accurately placed shift when pressure is applied in the press.

huh
I do not see any diference between any I have bent. But I find all bents have a small amount of bow in the base.
nissancrawler 03-03-2009, 04:08 AM I'm welding up a secondary jig that will be used after it's bent in the yugo jig. Remove the screws and the strap that holds the flat, and press it in the other jig with a bottom on it to hopefully square it all up, we'll see. We have some misdrilled flats left to play with. I was hoping it would square up with the right jig. Oh well, worst comes to worst, I'll order a 100% one.

Ben Segrest 03-18-2009, 11:57 AM I have Pete's. There are no locating pins that came with it. should I use some roll pins or drill stock or? Also, the bottom piece that DRM replaced has a pretty good bow in it. Would it be okay to replace that with 3/8" or does it need to be 1/4" for some reason?
aloharover 03-25-2009, 09:43 AM i never supplied pins. Myself just used two 1/8" drill bits.
The bow shouldn't matter. Tighten down all four bolts and the flat shouldn't move.
