Just exactly is the stuff made from or derived from? What alloy components are in it? Type of chromoly?? What's the story? I have seen billit 40spline axleshafts made from it and they seem to be indestructable. Now with the 60 & 44 ujoins available, I got curious about it. for the 300M ujoint if you have money burning a hole in your pocket ,,,go ahead but for 80 buck's I can have 35 spline outer for Another 80 bucks Inner Axle stock length ther are Many to choose from!! and 50 bucks for 332x joint! totaling 210 dollars for each side and thats Dana 60

camo: 5-600 for a set isn't that bad for unbreakable.
AA: I've got a 60. Have you never broke yours(assuming you have one)? If they were, say $1000 a set for axles and joints wouldn.t it be worth it to never break axles again and never think about breaking axles again. I like reliability- maybe I'm lame. If I were only going to run 38's, I'd drop a grand into the dana 44 300m setup for the reliability factor. Needless to say, I'll do it for my 60 too. 39's are cool, 42's are better,etc. etc. <IMG SRC="smilies/fj.gif" border="0">

these axles camo is quoting are probably full float Rear axles!! and he is guessing on Price !!thats why he said 500 to 600 the joint s i am sure are 275 bucks Each!and Dutchman sells Aloy shaft's for 600+ a Set!! so how could the 300M be 600 a Set?????

CTM's current joints are $275-$300 each and are machined 300M. Jack is tooling for a forged 300M joint that should have the cost well below $150 a joint.

My bud made some rear 60 shafts out of 300m, I think the material alone was $600

I have a set of 300M outer stubs on my ford 60.They were made about 10 years ago(yes 10) by Henrys Machine works.The axle is pressed into broched yoke and then welded. Blown up a couple of yokes but never hurt stub.They cost $600 back then. <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/bounce2.gif" border="0">I think I was one of the first kids to have 35 spline outers.

We make alot of 300M axles, torsion bars and swaybars for the off-road race cars here at Sway-A-Way. 300M is similar in composition to 4340 but it has a few more ingredients that give it it's strength, mostly silicon. Basically 300M has deeper hardenablility that other steels so it can be heat treated harder than other steels, we usually HT to about RC 53-56, which is 290-300 ksi UTS vs 230 ksi UTS for 4340. You have to be carefull though and find someone who knows how to heat treat it right.
300M was developed for aircraft, as was most other materials, but its not that exotic or high tech as most people think it is, it is however the best stuff that you can make axles and T-bars out of that is affordable and easy enough to work with. 300M is more expensive than commercial 4340, about twice the price, we pay about $2.30/lb, this is mostly because 300M is made for the aircraft industry and is aircraft grade and certified.
I have seen some billet 300M Dana 44 front axles, I don't know who made them but they were tough as hell, the owner sent them to us to straighten, the short side was bent about 2" TIR, but they didnt break the ears and we just straightened it and stress relieved it.
