Why are these things so damn expensive? For $500 I could buy a laptop and put in the weeds.

Cheapest I've found are around $100 but they go up quickly. Anyone have any experience with different kinds? I'm primarily looking for a preditor call for Coyotes but it would be nice to find one for deer and elk as well.

I bought a used Foxpro for 375 a year or 2 ago and it is bad ass except the battery case needs to be unplugged so you don't accidentally leave it on. Great volume, decent remote, will continue to hold value.

I made Varmint Al's "El Cheapo" and it works fine, and it's el cheap.

scroll down towards the bottom of the page to find details. This way you an upload your own sounds and make your own sequences or you can use his even.

I use this and my hand calls. Works fine.

Electronics are WAYYY over priced, even if you can download for free any sound.
Like many others I made my own for under $40 total.
I rely on my mouth calls mainly & use my player as backup. Once you get calls down you wont use a lot of electronics anyway, least I dont.

Thanks for the link to the el cheapo call, I'll look into that.

Where I'll be calling in coyotes it's wide open draws with tall grass and minimal shrubs/bushes and there is no way to cover my blind side. I'm just fearful of calling in a cougar or a crazy coyote to my blind side, I'd rather have the call away from me a 100 yards or so to give me a little more leeway.

Use hand calls and throw up a decoy out in the middle of the field.

I agree with using mouth calls and a decoy. The electronics don't seem to work on educated coyotes.
I have had a coyote jump in my lap while calling and although scary, it was one of the best rushes I've ever had. Use some kind of a decoy and stick with mouth blown calls. You will have much better success.

oh ok. I'll start with the home-made electronic stuff to help me learn the mouth calls and go from there. Thanks for all the info.

This works super.
I forgot to add in my post that I made a kinda rabbit decoy w/flooopy ears & tail on a metal rod, then attached to a spring base and then to a spool of 20LB fishing line, drop some rabbit smell on it to enhance the nose.
Now I can tug my line and make it bob up N down like a wounded rabbit....darn thing has been attacked tons of times by those coyotes....funny to see em try to grab it....then boom....gotcha!
Its on plywood base that I stake into the ground now....since the 1st coyote to attack it ran off with it so fast that I almost missed him.

That's what Tred Barta used in that episode where he tried to shoot a yote with a bow. It was a real rabbit on a PVC pole though...same idea.
