77 chevy crew cab 454 w/ t400 2x4, flat bed, pulling a 24ft triple axle trailor with a 4000# toy on it will just barely get moving.
takes miles to get up to speed. will go about 65 or 70 on the flat 35 on a long clime like the grape vine. but get the trailor unhooked and it will peel out and goes purtty good.
it gets 5-7mpg towing
does all this sound about right to you or should it go faster?
What are the gears in the rear end? Its 3/4 ton 14 bolt
sould thay be changed out for some lower ones?
thanks for the input.

What is the condition of the engine? How many miles? Ever rebuilt? If the engine is strong I would suspect a gear ratio change would make a big difference. you need to determine what ratio you have now. It may be shown on the sticker inside the glove compartment, or you will have to remove the rear cover on the rear diff., count the teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear, divide the small number into the bigger one and thats your ratio. that's the most accurate method, unless you know the entire history of the truck, the gears could have been changed at some point, which would make the rpo sticker inaccurate anyway.

the truck belongs to a friend. he has only had it for a year. Just started towing with it. I dont think he has any history of the truck. It burns alittle oil, not too bad doesnt smoke. he rebuilt the trans. It has stock size tires so not geared up from that.
I was thinking gears but when you hit a steep hill you can down shift into 1st and it still doesnt exelorate. We put my truck and his truck, both toyotas on the trailor and went to Johnson Valley for a night run this last week and it was real slow going. I can mack much better time with my toy with 38s and 22r. I guess we need to give it a compression test and see what its doing. Im sure gears would help it get going from a stop, but i dont understand why it wont pull faster up hills when you hit it at full speed from the bottom. Any other ideas would be apreceated:D

check the exhaust to, the convertor or muffler could be plugged and restricting it.
