Any of you guys used a hi lift like this for winching?

Seems a good backup for winch burnout. A mate says its to dodgy but I reckon its OK.

What do you think?

its not dodgy at all, works great, same as a tilford really, but without the expense. its slow going but will work in a bind.
BTW, theyre making a movie about the character in your avatar, i think matt daman is starring, i hope they do a good job of it like spiderman.

i have used my hilift as a winch several times. works great in a pinch. wouldnt want to have to go very far though, takes a lot of work.

Ben Affleck...i just saw the preview. Anyway, that's perfectly fine to use a hi-lift like that.

We pulled a K5 out doing that once - back in my teenager days. Took two guys to work the handle (thought the shear pin would go, never did) and it took damn near forever.

Make sure you have LOTS of extra chain. You can't use a tow strap anywhere in the system, since they stretch, and you can only pull 3 feet without rerigging it... so it the strap will stretch until you run out of jack.

well.. you could use a tow strap and rig it similar to what that guy did with the chain so teh tension is always on it.

Sure.. first full pull would be stretching the strap.. but after that.

(Won't get in to a strap breaking though)

I would rather walk 30 miles in the snow... barefoot... up hill... with open wounds...

Than to ever have to use a HiLift as a winch again :(

In case you didn't figure this out from my former post: What he said.

It's hard work, it hurts, and it's an all-around PITA. But it works.

I figured I would remove any doubt about how I feel about that particular form of torture :p How'd I do? ;)

Thas how I was doing it 20yrs ago before I got a real winch...and it was tough but worked when you needed it...makes for sore arms also....

I had been told that you never put a shackle into the "tounge" of the high lift, that's it's not designed for pulling there. Principle is fine, just have to put that part of the shackle over the whole jaw.

high lift makes a piece that slips over the lifting tongue, just for this.

PS high lift's are great winches, if you need to move a foot or two.

I like the "Lift rig and Push over" style,personally.. :p
