I keep buys trucks at towing auctions and they never have the F***ing keys with them,,, so I started pulling keys from the wrecking yards and now I`m up to 50 or so for GM and about twice that for ford.... Whats up ? I was told in the past there was only like 8 key codes for older GM`s and 14 or so for fords?
At the rate I`m going to be able to wear the F***ing key chains for a neckless before long. Thanks

Well lets see......

GM had an A - H blank style up through the mid to late 90's
So that makes 13 different blanks and each lock has 5 pins and each pin can be one of 5 different sizes........

Soooo.....5 to the fifth power is 3125 which means there are 3125 different combinations for EACH style of blank, so you take 3125 and multiply that by 13 and you need to collect 40625 different keys.

Of course my math could be wrong after all I only scored 129 on the IQ test.:D

I think you want 5! (5 factoral) not 5^5 (I am a little rusty). But 5! = 120 then multiply that times 13. So it is only 1560 ;)

Yeah, locksmith sounds good!

Assuming you've got the right stats on GM keys...

5 pins, 5 ways each pin could be, any combo is allowed, I'm coming up with 5^5, times how many blanks, over 40k keys... man, that'd suck.

Now, reality is, GM probably didn't actually *use* all of those keys, so you'd probably be OK at substantially less than that.

That said, these guys have "the original master key set" (according to their website--no affiliation, I just remember seeing this long ago) for Ford, GM, and Chrysler... http://www.awdirect.com/awdirect/finditem.cfm?itemid=6820

If you can get everything you need for $600 or so, or have to collect over 40k keys in order to get the equivalent... I think I'd spend the money. 'Specially if you do this regularly and/or for a living.

you couild also always just pull out the lock cylinder from one of these junkyard trucks.... but now you probably don't know what key goes with which truck.

there are about 350 keys per year model. You just need the code number from the lock and you can get a new key. code numbers can be obtained from a lock smith for the year and models you are interested in. You may have to prove a ligit reason or most lock smiths won't talk to you about the codes.
some codes will cross reference to other models, and years so it may be easy and it may be hard to find what you want.
