: Help With Rear End For 94 Bronco

Could use a little help. I'm an Isuzu Trooper guy trying to help out a friend with a 94 Bronco. It's auto with the 351 motor. His rear end is making a horrible noise and sounds like the ring and pinion are dying. There is a local pull a part near me. What year Bronco rear ends will work ? what other Ford rear end's will work ? what gearing does he have ?
Pull A Part usually only charges $70 for a whole axle. They even load it on your trailer for free.
What's a good auto locker for the rear ?
Thanks for the help.

Has he even pulled the diff cover?
It's a sterling 8.8 rear end
all models from 87-96 will work I think
a 9 inch will work but you have to move the VHS sensor
you might want to figure out the problem with the axle before you go talking about lockers

He took it to a local shop who said his Ring & Pinion were going bad. Said they wanted $700 for a new gear set and install. Once you have experienced Pull A Part, you have a hard time putting up with this nonsense. Are all the 87-96 Bronco rear end's geared the same ?
What other Ford's have the same rear axle as the 94 Bronco ? what is the gearing on the Bronco ?
Appreciate the help, ask me about an isuzu axle and I can ramble on forever. Don't know anything about the Ford's but hope to learn ASAP. The faster I fix his rig the sooner he can come wheeling with me.

What your looking at is a Ford 8.8 axle. It came in F-150's as well, for the same widths. Most likly he's got 3.73's in there, but I think bronco could come with 3.45's or 4.10's as well. It's also probally a L/S axle. You could just look at the axle tag or door for the ratio. This is also a C-clip axle. What you could do is just grab oneat the JY and toss it in. I run the same rear axle, and I use a lunchbox Powertrax locker, which works just fine pusing 37's. If you want to change ratio's I'd rebuild what you have, if your just going to toss in a locker then just trade out the axle.

My 88 has 3.55's as well it all depends you either got 3.55's or 4.10's. As far as a locker for the rear axle just weld the things up its much cheaper and you might as well do it when you check the ring, pinion and spiders....

make sure you know how to weld because if those welds break your rear end goes:barf: that's what happened to my 74

3.55 or 4.10 from the factory. never a 3.73 because there is no dana 44 ratio for the front axle.

We already established it was 3.55's. Do people even read the thread?

I know the later models had the VSS in the rear axle, whereas the older has the VSS in the T-case.

I believe they started in 95 with that, but it may be as low as 92 (cant remember off the top of my head). So you may need an axle with a VSS imput on the back there.

Check for that, otherwise anything bronco or F150 from 86-96 will work as long as the VSS sensor is taken care of.

Any 87+ 8.8 will have the VSS, 83-86 ones don't.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. So I am looking for a Bronco or F150 rear end 87-96. I gather all the rear ends for the Bronco and F150 are 3;55 or do I need to confirm the axle code on the body ?

I'd pull the cover to confirm, depending on what it's out of could be 3.08 to 4.10

X2. The G/R should be stamped on the ring or you can count teeth and divide.

70 bucks for a junk yard axle is a pretty good deal but I call bullshit on it being the ring and pinion. My 95 bronco started making some funky noises too. It was like a loud humming that got worse the faster I went. Turns out it was just bad carrier bearings. Cost me about 20 bucks.

If this sounds like your problem I would check the bearings first. At least it might save you 50 bucks and a trip to the junk yard
