DAAAAAMMMMMMMMM

That is awsome man. Those reducers remind me of the Bus gear reduction axles we used on VW Baja's :flipoff2: what size tires you using?

sweet axles, but one question what did you all do for oiling the pinion bearings?

JR,

I know you said that you guys welded some 1" stock to the portal housing as a truss of sorts. I'm not seeing it in any of those pics. Do you have any pics of it, or is it there and I'm just missing it?

That looks like a standard high-pinion 3rd to me... someone else worked that one out a long time ago.

Nice axles JR,

I think some of the confusion over the CV thing in the previous thread is now clear to me. You meant a double U joint CV when I meant a birfield style CV (damn rover lingo).

what exactly are the center sections?

no, its a flipped 9" centersection cause mogs run backwards, then the 2 gear portal corrects the direction.

hmm. daniel youre being awfully suspicious here.

let me guess.

6x6
6wheel steer
6 wheel portal axle

rockcrawler?

awesome, make it diesel powered and it will really kick ass!

extremely strong. ive never heard of one breaking, and they go through some SERIOUS use worldwide.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. :flipoff2: It's not a reverse cut high pinion differetial but a standard Ford 9" (well it's all after market stuff but based on Ford). They're flipped upside down which causes an oiling problem that has to be worked out in the pinion support to lubricate the pinion bearings.

But I guess I will be the one to ask $?It's hard to guess cause I'm not very good at keeping receipts, plus I have a lot of my own hours in them. Then there are all the steering components.

Without the steering components $4500 each is a rough ball park. But that was 2 years ago when CTM wasn't so busy. Today I don't know.

I'll take a picture and post it later.

The housings are Currie "9+." They are a little thicker than stock. The third members are Strange nodular carriers. I use Detroits. :)

Ryeguy (Rob) the guy in TTC that has full mog axles under his Chevy and 44" tires proved to me that these axles are HARD to break. I saw his truck bounce several times that I swear would have broke 60s.

not sure if they were moog or volvo portals, but the purple thing at the CalRocs event in Nevada (Moonrocks) did toast one. (front pass. side) I witnessed knuckle failure. It was likely a longtime in the making since it occured on flat ground, not while competing.
Pretty sure the rig was from socal, somebody here will likely recall who it was... ORGS rig???

In the top picture the upper shaft was made by Jack. The lower shaft is the stock 'mog. As you can see the 'mog shaft is turned down. It's diameter is just under 28 splines and is the reason we made new shafts instead of resplining the old ones. Just didn't want almost 28 spline lockers!

But a high pinion 9" doesnt have a removable pinion support. like some one else saids it just a regular 9" chunk

Ya i know there is a oiling problem with the center chunk flipped like that, but really what did you all do? From what i can see you dont have a electric pump pumping gear oil to the pinion bearing. or are you is there enough fluid throw off the ring gear directed into the pinion suport area or what? Thanks.

Do those axles have more or less clearance than a Mog center section? What gears ratio is in the diff? Do you find it to be geared too low on the street?

Since both the Ford and 'mog use about the same size ring gear (9"), clearance is about the same.
I use 2.50s in the diffs. The pinion is like 6" in diameter
with the 2.13 in the reduction boxes, the final is 5.27
TTC was the first time it was on the street :D I don't know how fast I was going at the end of the acceleration test ('bout 1/4 mile), but hope to never go that fast again :rasta:

Here's one for you guys. There is three different diameter axle shafts of the four that the 404 'mog uses. The shortest shaft is the smallest dia. Quiz time. Guess why?

fcfred
06-29-2002, 05:34 PM
I would guess that if it is the shortest shaft it would twist the least. and as such it wouldn't need to be as long.
does that make sense?

BadDog
06-30-2002, 12:28 AM
So that it twists tortionally equal to the larger shafts in shock load?

07-01-2002, 04:07 PM
if it has the same clearance as a mog diff, then why change to 9" diffs?

that is cool, though

JR
07-01-2002, 08:05 PM
1. Can place the diffs where you want them.
2. Don't have to deal with the long 'mog snouts and pinion joint conversion.
3. Less weight.
4. Don't have to run 7.50 gears.
5. Lots of locker options
6. Lots of replacement parts.
7. Higher drive line entry.
8. Make it the width you want, easy.
9. More Ford stuff :usa:

Daniel, I have to say.....that picture is one that gets me thinking....of big trucks......on mog axles....that are 6x6.

And I like thinking about that!:D :D

Hm. I'll have to re-measure, but I thought they were all different in size.

Bonus points for anyone: why are some shafts different material than others, in addition to different dia.'s?

ok I know they are more rare than 9's and there are not as many locker choices, but what about building portals around a set of eaton ho72 rear axles? They are bigger?

JR
07-02-2002, 08:39 PM
Hey Daniel, toying with the idea of 44s.

With 42s, I'm curently using 12 bolt hummers, stock width.
Would like to widen them 2". Any ideas?
The big deal is in making the beadlock wider. Is it hard ($) to get just the rubber band, not the run flat part, just the reinforced band? Maybe they could be cut down to fill in the gap.
