: Saiga 308 rifles, conversion thread
aloharover 12-28-2007, 08:20 AM Got some in and am converting similar to what I am doing on the S12.
Looking at doing one in Yugo style wood.
And then one with an ACE side folder and US made railed front end.
Will do a US piston, pistol grip, FCG.
Whats a good source on 20 or 30rd magazines for these? Anything US made?
I am also looking at using M14 mags.

I have been looking around for 30 rd mags. and all the places that sell them seem to be back ordered like crazy. I am getting ready to make a "dragunov" style rifle out of one of the 21.8" .308 rifles, and mags seem to be pretty scarce.
Loveday 12-28-2007, 02:09 PM FBMG sells 30-rounders, but they're insanely expensive IMHO.
I'm going to try to mod some M14 mags I picked up.

Edit: if you should have to use any foreign mags or wind up with any foreign mag parts, I've got a bunch of new US made floor plates and followers.
usmcdoc14 12-28-2007, 05:27 PM I would fuck up some FAL mags as they are cheaper.
aloharover 12-28-2007, 06:37 PM Well given that reasoning its times to dig into the 1$ G3 mags :D
Loveday 12-28-2007, 06:59 PM Pete, can you do anything price-wise on RSA fcg's for the VEPR 308? I need two more.
And I've got a box of G3's from CTD myself. Surely someone can do better than this:

aloharover 12-28-2007, 09:13 PM Those G3 converted liberty mags are barftacular.
You have to remove all the material from the front of the G3 to get it into the mag well.
The FAL mag will be a lsightly better fit, bit narrower at the front.
I wonder about sawing the front of the magazine, bend the sides in some and then seld it back together. Cut the follower and floor plate down.

Will and AK FCG work? I still have some of the Copes kits with pistol grip and piston.
morpheus 12-28-2007, 09:18 PM hey pete, what do you think of that handguard? I've been thinking of getting one like that. Personally not real fond of the rail on the top piece but like the rest of it.
rocknbronco 12-28-2007, 09:24 PM It looks all good to me.....
afroman006 12-28-2007, 09:29 PM Pete, are you talking about modding mags to fit the rifle? Why not hack away at the rifle till G3 mags fit with no modifications. I am somewhat turned off at the idea of modifying mags to work, I'd rather modify the receiving gun. Seems like it would ultimately be less work and encourage one to buy buku's of mags (epecially G3's )
usmcdoc14 12-28-2007, 09:35 PM Pete, instead of the cut/pinch/weld of the front of the FAL mag why not make a chunk of steel that is a copy of the top/lug/inserted area of the saiga mag, cut that area of the FAL magazine out and then weld that new "nose" in and then weld the duckbill milled out of steel on the back.

It is plastic not aluminum.
The two side pieces are bolted on so they can be removed.
Depending on the rifle receiver some sanding has been required at the handguard-receiver joint, but it's plastic so easy enough.
I actually like the top piece, makes a good spot for a red dot.
ACE side folder, this fore end with a vertical grip, flashlight, and the red light is kinda mall ninja, but it works.
Good price.

If I can find a way to easily and quickly modify a mag without touching the rifle then I have a huge market to make more mags and sell them.
Going the other way people would have to send me their rifles and they can never use stock style mags again. Or I am just buying Saiga rifles, doing the full conversion and selling it as such.

just wonder about the follower and the area where the two meet.
I think I could pretty quickly and easily make up a solid wood die. Route out the areas for the bead rolls in the stock FAL mag.
I also believe that since the body, follower, and base plate would all get modified by the process all would now be US parts.
Though I also think the rifle can be made to work directly with unmodified FAL metric mags. Which is probably going to end up the path I take.
Been reading where people are talking 2-3 MOA with these. Wonder if a new barrel, trigger work, and longer sight radius could improve upon this. Maybe make up a SaigaVD :D
Pete
aloharover 12-30-2007, 08:32 PM Anyone got a Bren mag? Only seen the photos. Think this would work?
I am also wondering how hard it would be to make feed lips and then take the stock follower and stick it into the Saiga-12 10 rd mags. Looks like it would hold 30x308

Yeah. They'll work, but lots of people have touble getting the G2 to have positive engagement with the safety. You either have to build up the safety, or use a Yugo selector. Or you can use the RSA fcg for the VEPR 308. Which is what I've chosen to do.
I never thought about using one of the AGP's. I'll have to fiddle with it and see if the bolt will clear the rear of the mag.
