Anyone mounted, either by receiver hitch, or permanent mount, a rear winch on their Heep?
Lemme see pix, ideas.

Mounted over the axle, most of the time the cable is hooked to the top of the diff housing for an adjustable limiting strap. On steep downhills, I pull the axle up to the bumpstops to lessen the chance of going over.

My buddy mounted one in his flat-bed Samurai on the edge of the bed.

when my heep is finally running again I will have a rear mounted winch, but I am not running a tailgate so I will fab up a bracket to fit inside the tub right behind the fuel cell...:D

I mounted my HS9500I on a multi-mount, installed recievers front and rear, wired in quick plugs front/rear, can use winch either place or not carry it at all. I have a set of 20' jumper cables that quick connect on one end so I could put the winch into anyones reciever and just hook to battery to use...works great...especially on the trail if someone else needs it

The electric forklifts usually use the same type of quickplug. Same as those fold down steps I see on some people's rigs those are the ones we use on the icecream trucks. I heard a guy paid $70 for a pair and my work pays like $30. Other advantage is your winch doesn't have to be on all the time for thieves. Just my .02

I've got a steel plate with 2" tube for my rear receiver. But I'll be damned if I'll ever use it on the Jeep. My winch is so heavy and a tight fit that it's never comin' off.

If I need the winch to pull me backwards, I just loop my cable under my axles (poor man's solution).

I may use the plate on a winch for my trailer though.

If I had the room, I'd be doing this:

This one's encased inside the rear bumper - like the ARB bull bar. The bumper has to be removed to get the winch in/out.

it looks like that bumper totaly murdered your departure angle, do you get hung up on it often

Same departure angle as without it - at least right in the center of the rig. Here's one from the side showing the hitch which is still on. A straight line to the bottom of the tires abuts the hitch and the bumper.

It is a little big and if I had it do over again, I'd trim down the dimensions by about an inch or so all the way around. ON the other hand, it protects my ass end and all that glass a lot better than the stock configuration.

Oh, I've never gotten hung up on it, though I do tend to drag it around on some of the obstacles we have around here. It's pretty stout: 8 gauge t304 and the mounts are 3/16 - or maybe that's the other way around? I always forget which is which...

Hey JayH, is that a Boxer in the background of the photo?

You can, it's not an original idea. The hickey sidewinder was set up like that so that you could run the cable to the front or back. You see them for sale once in a while.

I've been told I can run the winch I have to the rear just by taking the cable out of the fairlead and running it to the rear. You just can't go out the front, down the bumper and back, that will break the cable.

The thing I like about his setup is it's all ready to go front or rear. No dragging the cable under the truck, no lugging a portable winch to the back, just grab the hook on the front or the snatch block on the rear and go. I also like the way he can rig it both front and rear. That could come in handy if you ever had to cross something like say a washout on a side hill where you'd want it attached front and rear to keep it from sliding down.

My undercarriage is just too crowded to do that without a bunch of pullys. Also no room to mount a winch midship like he did. But, if I ever decide to build something bigger, that's what I'm doing.

Nope, Niko is a pure bred American Pit Bull Terrier.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I've been thinking some more on this, and i think the really trick setup would be to make a rear bumper whichs holds the rear winch, AND doubles as an airtank. I've got an ARB, and QuickAir hooked up together, with a quick connect coming out the right rear panel, if i could run a T off to the air tank, that would work very nicely.
I guess the biggest problem is theres not much room between blocking the rear door, and hanging down in harms way. The internal winch seems kinda different, but i'm not a fan of having a winch and winch cable somewhere i can't get to it in case of problems. Also its hard to make sure it spools back on the drum properly.
The Multi Mount is another good (cheaper) option, but space in a YJ is always at a premium, and another 75lb chunk of metal inside the vehicle waiting to nail you in a rollover doesn't thrill me. So anything you can bolt down, AND LEAVE THERE, is a good idea. Also, i have heard multimounts are not as strong as frame bolted winches (obviously), especially for sideways pulls, and we all know how often the nearest winch point is right in front of you.....:D.
Anyway, if anyone else has ideas, i'd like to hear them.
