I've been wanting to get an ak for a while, and am looking at one from aim.
http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/New_Rifles_.html

they are only about an hour and a half away, so no shipping or ffl charges as I'll drive over there. It looks like a good rifle, but a bit more than I wanted to spend. I've got a budget of $500, and was hoping to get the rifle a 1k rounds for that (or fairly close). There's a big gun show coming up the second week of January. Think it would be better to wait and see what I can find there? Or is this a really good deal, and I should get it and just buy less ammo for now?

I should add I'm not necessarily looking for a brand new gun, just something to shoot and keep around the house for target practice/coyotes.

Those are built in the US with Yugo parts kits for Century. They are well built from the reports I have heard, and the few I have handled (never shot, only fondled). The AIM price is good in my opinion, similar to what is avail at the gunshows (here). The underfolders are not much more, and worth it IMO....even if it cuts into your ammo budget a bit.

I`ve shot a couple and they`re very nice for the price, especialy when they come with a new barrel. If your not going to build your own, I`d buy one. Your not going to hit your budget though if your planning on 1k of ammo with it. You MAY find a decent price for ammo at the fun show, but I doubt it. You`ll have a hard time finding 1k for less than $180.

One of mine (my first) is a century built on a yugo. Shoot pretty good and is decent quality. I had to play with the trigger some as it would bite the shit out of you but all in all, not bad. :D

Trigger slap is easy to fix. All you need to do is grind down the lower portion of the disconnector tail. Its caused by the hammer striking the disconnector, then the disconnector binds on the trigger as it moves back to reset. The bind is what causes the slap on your finger. Grinding down the tail eliminates the bind, and the slap.

i wouldn't mind trying to build one, but not sure yet. might look at the gun show and see how much some kits/receivers would run and go from there.

ended up buying a century built yugo from aim. put 20 rounds through it yesterday, and shot just fine. only question i have is how do you remove the lower hand guard? i found the bolt behind the recoil pad to remove the stock, and took off the upper handguard, but haven't found the trick for the lower hand guard.

If holding the rifle like you are shooting it there is a very small (1/8x1/8x1/2") lever located on the top, right, front of the lower handguard. This gets rotated forward, and then the hand guard retainer slides forward.

thanks, just looked and saw that. that would have been tough to spot.

what all types of grips do you sell for an ak? i'm wanting to replace the chincy plastic one, but can't decide if i want a wooden grip, or a more sturdy plastic one (the one on there is kinda thin for my hands). i'm going to be refinishing the wood, so would like to get that at around the same time.

ACE makes an adapter so you can use any AR grip on an AK. I will see about trying to get a photo up here tonight or tomorrow.
I have the CAA G47, and the Ergo also available for AKs.
I think CAA also makes one of their customizable grips (kinda like the MIAD) for the AK.

thanks. do you offhand know the dimensions of the ergo one? i like the way it looks, and it looks like it might be a bit bigger than the one that came on my yugo.
