: why 38.5 swampers?

i was just thinking about this and wondered if anyone knew the answer. Super Swamper tires are notorious for being undersized. I've heard measurements of 37s that were just over 35". So, why do they bother calling a tire 38.5, why not just 38 or 39? They're clearly not accurate enough to make one a half inch bigger or smaller than another.

think of the name.... SWAMPER.

Long before rock crawling was a fad - these tires were built to specs for mud competitions.

As with anything else - competition guidelines change over time, but the tires that were spec'd out to run certain categories do not always change.

I am sure if anything here is incorrect - TEX knows more than enough to set me straight ;)

anyone know the actual diameter difference between their 38s, 38.5s, and 39s (if they even have 39s).

dont look at tires much, do ya steve :D

dunno, i personally have the 38.5x14.5r16.5 SX but have never measured. And no, 9volt, i don't look at tires much because i have these and if i ever switch it will be to a 42" TSL.

This is a 38.5 at 10 lbs on a 10" beadlock

38 x 12.50 on a 10" rim v a 38.5 on a 10" rim...10# air

Here's a flat out guess for you. The tire molds are sized correctly, then, when the tire cools, it shrinks down a bit.

These are my 42's next to my old 38.5's....

why is a 2x4 actually 1.5"x3.5"? The answer? Who cares. Carry a tape measure if you need to be that exact and call it good.

it's not that i care how big the tire is. I just find it interesting that a company that clearly is sometimes well over an inch off in their measuring make a tire that is supposedly a half inch bigger. Also i wonder why 38.5 and apparently 39.5 are the only half inch designations in their line. This is not a question being asked for any practical benefit, i'm just curious.

Steve great question,
why don't you call interco and ask them
and then give the class a report on monday as we would all like to know
thanks

as for you DRM if you are going to chew gum in class you better have enough for everyone!:D

Why is it the lug pattern on some TSLs are tighter that on others?

Case in point, I am running 35x15s I can almost lay 4 fingers down in between lugs. My buddy runs 36s on hid junk, and you can only get 2 finger in, I mean down, in between lugs.

My guess follows DRMs line of thinking. These were some of the first models offered by Interco and were made for mud, hence the lager lugs and voids in between lugs. I want to run 38s or 39s next year and want to keep the same lug spacing. Is it safe to assume that they used the same spacing on the earlier versions denoted by 15x35 type nominclature?

I would just go to the local tire store and check out different tires but all they have are passenger car tires, WTF??? :D

because swampers are like wimmen? :D

seriously, i think its because throughtout the swamper size range, they keep the proportions correct with the tire. meaning when you increase diameter, you increase the lug spacing. so they keep the same number of lugs, just make them bigger and further apart as tire size increases. thats my guess anyways.

oh and DRM, can i have a piece of gum? :D

because the sawmill cuts a 2x4 rough, and then it is planed smooth.

Can't answer the tire question tho. I think its a marketing ploy

here is another thought as to tire size.... if you take each tire and put it on a 6 inch rime YES SIX inch rim then pump it to MAX pressure you will have an accurate tire size then you put each tire on a rim that is 2 inches wider than the advertised width and you ahve the right width so they are acurate RIGHT?

just a side note a buddy got some 36" and not on rims they measure 33" WTF .... BFG actually do measure 32.5 why go 36..... but they wern't on rims so.....
