: Millermatic vintage welder help
85jeepn 12-30-2007, 06:05 AM There is a listing for a Millermatic vintage mig welder on Craigs list. That is all the info that is given. The listing says it will weld up to 1/2 steel. It is abot 4 hours from me so not close enough to go look at. He has not responded to request for pics yet. My main question is I have never heard of a Millermatic vintage.
What is the amp output?
Are they any good?
Any help here would be great.
Thanks
BumpyDodge 12-30-2007, 06:29 AM It's a "250 class" machine. The Vintage was meant to operate like an older MM200. It should weld 1/2" no problem.
85jeepn 12-30-2007, 06:45 AM It's a pretty good machine then? They are asking $800.00 for it. I don't know the age or much about it yet. Waiting for a responce from them.
BumpyDodge 12-30-2007, 07:53 AM $800 sounds like a fair deal. They aren't very old machines. Just ask the typical "used car" questions. When was it last running? Why are you selling it? Can I take it for a test drive?
For that price I wouldn't nitpick very much. I think they sold for around 2K new.
85jeepn 12-30-2007, 08:52 AM Millermatic Vintage is a welder Miller came out with after they introduced MM250 and 250X. There were so many pissed off former MM200 owners that "upgraded" to the newer machine only to find out it was a POS compared to MM200.
Vintage is supposed to have the same internals (transformer, rectifier, etc.,) as the MM200 so it should be just like the MM200 in terms of power output and weld characteristics. Vintage should have been manufactured in the mid to late 1990s. Ask for the serial # to see what year it was manufactured.
I would buy the Vintage for $800 if it is in good shape.
MM200 and Vintage are 250 amp class machines. The max output is nearly 300 amps.
200 amps at 60% duty cycle.
Wow! I may have finally found the machine I was looking for. I don't have much experience welding, but I want to learn, and get a machine that I won't outgrow as my skills get better. I don't like to buy things twice.
SHERPA 12-31-2007, 06:34 AM definetely sounds like the perfect machine for you....... used industrial
quality is always 110% better than "home-use" branded equipment.....
the vintage machine is just what the other guys have mentioned...
I still have my mm200, and a newer mm250x machine. (no reason to
sell my older 200 machine since it wouldn't fetch very much, and makes it
very easy for me to maintain 1 machine with a different wire gauge for
thin material, and one of thicker materials.
if it's available, try to get the guys bottle with the welder too.... he
might be moving, or getting out of welding.... you might even ask if
there are any other accessories that go with the welder... helmet, gloves,
welding aprons, tools, spares, wires, etc....

85jeepn 12-31-2007, 06:37 AM Thanks.
He is supossed to be getting me some pics and answers to some questions today.
Thanks again guys.
SPEEDCRAVIN 12-31-2007, 06:47 AM I have a Millermatic Vintage and I love it. It is the 250 machine family. I bought mine new and have went through 5 or 6 44lbs spools of wire in this machine and 2 m-25 guns. I like it so much I bought one for my bodyshop...
Most wont need any bigger Mig machines...
When I bought mine there was a Vintage 250 and just a 250 side by side and I asked what the differances were. The guy at the welding store told me when they built the 250 the pro welders did not like how the zap started in the new machine and sales were down so they built the VIntage 250 with the older curcuit boards. He told me the new machine ahd digital boards and the older machines and the Vintage had the analog boards and the anolog made a better weld start (zap)
I dont know if that is true but I know I like my Vintage...
800 bucks for a decent machine is a steel!!!

85jeepn 01-01-2008, 07:41 AM I want to thank you guys again for your input on the welder. I got the pics from the guy and they look like a used welder but not beat to hell. Scratches, dirt, a few dings but nothing major. Comes with a brand new miller gun and he says it works flawlessly, talked him down to $700. Going up Saturday to pick it up.
Thanks again guys.

SPEEDCRAVIN 01-02-2008, 05:52 AM I did not jump the 2 wires but when I pull the trigger it controls the relay board inside and they are working. I have also tried an old gun and it does the same thing. I called the Airgas place and they wee no help. They want me to bring it to them and they will send it to Fort Smith for repairs. Sounds pricy to me. I am trying to find out whey they send it to so i can cut out the middle man. Hell I can take a long lunch and run to Fort Smith...

flycl65 01-02-2008, 10:07 PM You'll love it, I had a Home depot 230v Lincoln that I sold a few years ago and bought vintage off ebay for $600 with bottle, flow meter, and a spool of wire, and a jackson auto dark helmet. Nobody knew what a Vintage was so, I got a deal on it. I figured a Miller 250amp made in 98 couldn't be that bad especially for 600. I put a tweeko gun and liner in it and it has worked flawlessly.
good score, have fun with it.
