Senator Perata Carjacked in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS/AP) -- State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata was robbed at gunpoint of his government-issue car Saturday afternoon while driving in his district in Oakland.

Perata, 62, said that a masked man tapped on the window of his 2006 red Dodge Charger with a gun shortly before 2 p.m., while he was waiting at a red light in North Oakland.

The carjacker told him to get out of the car, and Perata said everything happened so quickly that he didn't feel fear. He immediately complied and got out on the street. He was not injured.

"My only concern was that he was fiddling with his mask. I was thinking, 'I hope he doesn't get one motor skill confused with another and shoot me,'" Perata said.

"It's weird what goes through your head, but that's what I was thinking," he said.

Oakland Police Lt. Lawrence Green said a second man drove the robber to the intersection in a stolen two-door gold Chevrolet Camaro. No arrests have been made.

Perata said dozens of witnesses saw what happened at the busy intersection, and offered assistance immediately.

The state senator has lived his whole life in Oakland, and said he has never been the victim of a violent crime.

"This is a punctuation mark on what I've been doing for 20 years. There are too many guns out there," he said.

"Anyone who would do that in broad daylight with hundreds of people around must be pretty desperate."

The Democrat is one of many public officials who have struggled to find solutions for Oakland increasing violent crime. Last year Perata enlisted the help of Oakland's numerous motorcycle clubs in an effort to provide mentors to young people who are lured by street life.

This morning he was saying something about this incident showing him that there are too many guns out in the streets and there needs to be better gun control. Another person thinking legislation is going to stop criminals. :shaking:

The cops think he was targeted because of his "dubs".

sounds like not enuff guns are out there...if some of those "dozens of witnesses" had been armed, they COULD have stopped the robbery.

Dubs on his government-issue car? Spiffy!

Standard equipment on a lot of the newer Chryslers.

Wonder if he'll ever make the connection that making it harder for the law-abiding to get guns, only makes the criminals' "job" easier. Somehow I doubt it. :(

It's good to see that our state spent my tax dollars on buying this tool "Dubs" for his state owned car :shaking:

It's California. You've got millions of deer, and a few wolves spotlighting them.

I guess it failed to cross his feeble mind that armed robbery is already against the law. :shaking: Yes, more legislation is precisely what we need in order to make things all better. :shaking::shaking:

Well why not? It's working in the UK....I mean the outlawed some/most firearms...now that some samurai wielding individuals are terrorizing the countryside....they decided to ban those too.

the wonderful logic of that guy is impressive.:shaking:

holy fuck.
a CRIMINAL robs me at gunpoint.
There are dozens of people around who do not do shit because none of them have a gun.
I don't have a gun.

Therefore the CRIMINAL has to have owned a legally purchased gun  AND it will be all good if NO ONE AT ALL has a gun.

Is it wrong of me to keep a katana in my golf bag? It seemed a good place to store it last time I moved and it's been there since. Only been questioned about it a few times at the golf courses.

Surprised no one turned up his CCW permit application yet! Guy gets robbed at gunpoint by an "automatic" pistol and wants to limit the guns on the street... but it is ok if he goes out and gets a permit??? If no one can find it I will look to see where I had found it earlier. He fears for his safety afterall.

I fear for my rights as a gun owner. I compete, hunt, and am teaching my children and all I can that it is not GUN CONTROL that will make the difference, but education. Education that guns are not inherently evil, they are merely tools. Tools for hunting, and for protection.

The few that I have "converted" to this education on guns has shown amazing difference in their thoughts and actions. It seems like a light has come on in their head and then "Holy Crap, he's right". Granted, some of them still don't own guns, but they are no longer against others owning them if they are lawful in their intent.

Gun control means using both hands to hit your target. Gun control means allowing (read: Encouraging) law abiding citizens to carry for their defense and to help defend those that are unable to defend themselves. Gun control means making it harder for a criminal to rob/molest/mug/rape their victims. If people can start sticking up for themselves and others against the "forces of evil", then we will be back on track to making this country what our founding fathers had in mind. A free country from enemies, foreign (terrorists) and domestic (muggers, rapers, criminals).

Who knows, it could happen.

I think to prevent this thing from happening again we need to take a logical approach and do what it takes to prevent this happening in the future. Sacrifices must be made and I believe I'm ready to make it.

No more cars for state Senators. :flipoff2:

Don Perata shouldn't be so modest....this is the same guy who in 2001 opposed the notion that gun manufactures shouldn't be held liable, barring manufacturing/production defects in workmanship etc., for damages caused by intentional and illegal misuse of their products, namely handguns, vis-a-vis a SCOTUS ruling in 1983.

So, in order to protect himself so that he can further his crusade bolstering "rational" gun ownership, he felt compelled to legally arm himself.

Hey, at least he's not speaking out against guns and surrounding himself with armed bodyguards. :flipoff2:
