: weird NP231 shifts

I am going to assume that I screwed something up here, looking for suggestions on how to fix it. My NP 231 just grinds when it is in 2hi or 4hi and I let off the clutch. If I put it into 4lo, it works fine. If I put it into neutral, it works the same as 4lo. How the hell did I manage that one? I did have it apart and it is the front half of a 95 ram np231 and rear half of a 93 yj np231. There is only one shift rail so I can't see how I managed it.

Thanks,
Moe

Even when I remove the linkage and shift the shaft coming out of the transfer it does the same thing. That was the first thing I tried.

did you just install a short shaft kit?
could be the sequence of the shift "cam" is off.

or it could be you had a t-case skid drop or a body lift. wich put pressure on the linkage causing the shift fork to wear on the slider, wearing the plastic pads off and chewing up the Aluminum arm. Wich will cause it to do something similiar.

X2

sounds like you may have fawked up on assembly if you are sure the two different halves are compatible?

they are both NP231, but the Jeep had the short input shaft, I needed the long one which the truck had.

I changed the shift fork, it appears to work correctly. I will know for sure when I put it back in today.
