So prior to the 4l60/4l80 years, what did 3/4 and 1 ton trucks have for an automatic, the 700r4? The 700r4 was improved in 87, but were they ever good enough for a 1 ton? And what was the best transfer case used with the 700r4? Basically I want to know what is the best 700r4/tcase combo to look for on Craigslist. (gearhead heaven!)

I see in your sig you are building a race truck. What's the application for the 700r4/t case combo you are asking about?

700's never came in 1 tons to my knowledge, and probably only came behind small blocks in 3/4t's. they also came with either a 208 or a 241, and of those the 241 is the better choice. now you can make something better with a little mix and match, but for stock combo's this is the best IMO.

The 4L80E was the first OD auto used in GM 1-tons.

OK, thanks for the info. I ask because I am building up my 93 fullsize blazer into a pre-runner. It has a 5 sp now, but I want to convert it to a 4 speed auto. So I will look for a 87 to 92 3/4 ton 4wd being parted out. Should I get a 3/4 ton ifs diff while i'm at it? Bet I can find it all within 2 weeks!

1/2 or 3/4 ton will not matter if u are looking for a 700, no difference. It will take a lot of fab work to get the eight lub stuff to work with your half-ton frame, but if u are looking for a pre-runner stance then maybe some long travel a-arms are what u are looking for, and that u will have to fab yourself. The 3/4 ton diff will be very close to bolting up in the stock location. The cv axles are longer and the diff is longer, thus giving the wider track width the 3.4 and 1-tons have. U maybe able to use the 6-lug knuckles cause the splines are the same from 6-lig to 8-lug, this would simplify things alot for u. Come to think of it, with a set of longer a-arms, this would be a pretty easy swap. Just so u know, the lower a-arms are the same from 1/2 to 3/4-1ton. The uppers are different with different balljoints, but u can swap the balljoints between the 2 with drilling a couple of new holes. the 8-lug knuckle is taller than the 6-lug, that is why u can not use it on the half ton frame unless u fab up some new frame mounts.

Has to be 91+ and 8-lug if you want a 4L80E.
