: 366 chevy?
fredbuilt 01-01-2008, 05:36 AM Looking at buying a 1976 chevy dump truck. Its going for a good price, and seems to be in good condition. My question is what is a chevy 366? is the owner mistaken. I asked him twice if he meant 350 but he said it was a 366. Now if it is what he says it is, whats the parts availability? Sorry to be putting this on a 4X4 forum but you guys have always been good with info and I couldn't find anything online. Which probably isn't a good sign
WyoJeeper 01-01-2008, 05:56 AM The 366 is an oddball big block. I dont think much will interchange. Very limited on parts.
JeffHPK5 01-01-2008, 05:59 AM Tall deck , small bore BBC. The couple I've been around where low revving and and had a very flat power curves, even with the governors removed they where less than exciting.
fredbuilt 01-01-2008, 06:26 AM Yup I think if I do get it I will run it till something goes and replace it with a 350.
Grumpy_old_fart 01-01-2008, 09:20 AM try using the magical "search" function.
trkklr77 01-01-2008, 10:10 AM it has been thouroghly coverd.
dont waste your time or money.
med stroke
small bore
small heads
very heavy
not worth the effort. get a regular bbc and you will be much happier.
fredbuilt 01-01-2008, 11:35 AM try using the magical "search" function.
Some people on here cry about search, search, search. Yes all the answers to life's question are on the net. I could waste time "searching" on the Internet and might find a good answer. Not to patronize you guys but the members of pirate4X4 are a great resource. It is no different then another Landscaper asking me how I would fell a tree. Sure I could tell him to go back to his forestry books but why be that way just tell him what I know.
Grumpy if you would read what I originally wrote on my second to last sentence: Sorry to be putting this on a 4X4 forum but you guys have always been good with info and I couldn't find anything online.
49willys 01-01-2008, 11:59 AM If your buying it to use as a dump truck it'll be fine.... You would not want to replace it with a 350. Parts availability is not an issue as everything for them is readily available.
It is not a hot rod engine, but suitable for what it was designed for, medium duty trucks. just my $.02
trkklr77 01-01-2008, 12:01 PM bullshit, i have gone through this at least 3 times with pics , spec, why they are differnt, what to expect, whats better.
please search my name with above info and you will find EVERYTHING HERE.
49willys 01-01-2008, 12:11 PM Read his post, Guess reading comprehension is not important to you, but he is asking about buying a dumptruck with a running motor to use as (get this) a dump truck, not buying an engine to transplant.....
And your suggestion is he would be much better off buying a regular 454, ok, will that haul dirt or will he still be looking for a dumptruck?
Now, where is the flip off smiley when I need him?
fredbuilt 01-01-2008, 12:41 PM yup I have a 454 in my dd. That would be the smarter choice. I will just run the 366 till it dies. 454 are easy to come by. LOL maybe I could convince the fiance to let me get a 454 crate motor for the dd and but the engine from that in the dump truck... Well I can always dream.
Stout Racing 01-01-2008, 12:57 PM why not build a 427 with the 366 crank and the 454 block :P haha
fredbuilt 01-01-2008, 01:08 PM no comment
Stout Racing 01-01-2008, 01:18 PM well it was just a thought do u wanna stay big block??
Grumpy_old_fart 01-01-2008, 07:48 PM if you couldnt find it with search, let me provide you with some info..
using the Advanced search on this board alone, i found, using the text delineated in such a fashion:
"366 AND BBC AND Engine"
this request came up with the following results, as pictured:

next time, dont forget to actually use the search function. if you have problems using the search function, I would suggest learning how to use the search function. Generally, this requires hearing the resounding *POP* as your head removes itself from your rectum.
listen for it......

VerticalTRX 01-01-2008, 08:11 PM The 366 is a medium duty big block. It is a slight step up in power from the 350 offered in the MDT's, but was mostly an option for greater durability over the 350. It will serve you well in its intended application, and parts availability is not a problem.

terryd 01-01-2008, 08:39 PM Yup I think if I do get it I will run it till something goes and replace it with a 350.
don't do that. A 366 may not be a high revvin motor, but they are a pretty formatable truck motor. Much stronger than a 350. It's has the canted valves of a big block.
KyTrash 01-01-2008, 08:42 PM 366,427 Tall blocks are .400 thousands of inch taller in deck height. They use a taller distributor and intake. These blocks are a true 4 bolt main with the front main cap having 4 bolts as well as the rear main cap having 4.The 366 will move your dump truck better than a 350.:) I beg to differ on the performance part. Any one who pulls trucks around here will to. Back years ago KTPA (Kentucky Truck Pullers Association limited the 4 wheel modified class to 370 cid. May and Travis Coomer's truck kicked ass that year with May behind the wheel . Well, you guessed a highly modified 366 tall block. The little big motor sounded like mouse motor on steroids.I always thought a 366 made a good boat anchor until then. OH WELL,HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!:grinpimp::grinpimp:
Tominator II 01-01-2008, 10:25 PM Well since I actually read this thread and am not going to read all those links in the search results to see if it was covered, I would rather have any Chevy Big Block in a truck. I dont know how hot you have to get a BBC to overheat and blow a head gasket and I have run them into the red a scary amount of times. Do it in a small block once, you probably blow a head gasket and lose a cam.
GMCTruxrule 01-01-2008, 10:33 PM I vote for preventative maintenance, proper driving and engine operation and not overheating them. :smokin:

That is most excellent but Sh!t happens! :D

What do you know about a 5 liter v6 chevy? :flipoff2:
I saw one in a truck back in 2000, Tried google but didn't find much, lost interest until a couple weeks (months?) ago there was some info on them.
If I really cared I'd find the thread on my own, I just wanted to throw some more shit around :blackmrt:

you didnt read any of the searched threads did you?
they do NOT use a different dist.
the pathetic closed chamber small valve heads on the 366 i picked up it is very obvious what a stock pair of open chambers and a carb could do to one of these motors. the ultimate question is why bother. they are a longer stroke and a heavier rotating assembly which is why they make such good med truck motors, but the retarded pistons and puny bores make it all kind of a waste.
Kilborg 01-02-2008, 06:26 PM Urban - Big block v6's were gmc made.. search 60-66 guy and youll find all kinds of cool info.
The 366 isnt a terrible motor for what it was made for...governed medium duty trucks with lotsa gears. The 427 talldeck was a much better motor and i personally wrench on a few trucks with em that do just fine with a load. I got a 427 talldeck on the stand im working on...apparently its a very desireable block for the high cube drag guys. As far as the 366 and performance...i guess you could work out something.
My advice on the 366 dump truck: If its cheap, has a good frame, good hydraulics, and good brakes/axles, buy it. Run the little 366 until it croaks and do a diesel repower of your choice. Or just spend 150 grand on a new one like the rest of the knuckleheads that come into my shop. Nothin wrong with running an old turd for awile.
fredbuilt 01-02-2008, 06:44 PM The guy only wants 3000 for it. Everything works great on it. I just started this business this summer so the 150 grand deal is out the picture. I also do a lot of work on some of the privately owned islands here on the coast of Maine, and with the way my ramps work on the barge some times your in 3 feet of salt water so I am better off with an old beater. I think I will run it how it is and when and if the 366 shits the bed I will re power. Thanks all for the info guys if you ever need any landscaping done in Maine give me a shout.
Kilborg 01-03-2008, 04:08 PM Your pretty close fred...I wrench donovans in Nh, best dump truck shop around bar none. Our prices are a little high but seeing the quality (Read: Shit i wouldnt run on a 1/2 ton pickup let alone a tri axle)of the competition, you get your moneys worth. Pm me and maybe i can give you a list of stuff to check out....Big trucks get expensive QUICK and they arent easy to work on unless you are setup for it.
