: Problems with GM Axle, Ford Hub/Rotor
RustoleumWhite 06-29-2002, 06:55 PM OK, this was *supposed* to be simple...
I have a GM D44, GM Knuckles, GM "small" bearing spindles, GM "Full Coverage" backing plates, Late model F-150 ('91??) hub and rotor, fresh from the pull-a-part.
The Ford rotors hit the backing plate. Its like they are going on too far. I put a GM hub/rotor on, and they come close, but don't hit. Measured from rotor face to rear bearings, and the ford is maybe 1/16"->1/8" farther inset. Checked online part numbers and the same rotor is called out for all F-150 '79->'91
What am I doing wrong?? Everyone says its a bolt and go job, but this is a no go for me. The bearings "feel" good on the ford hubs, but I have not pulled them and checked them out.
Any clues?? Is there a differance in GM backing plates??
HELP!!

ALEX Bronco 06-29-2002, 08:07 PM What year are your spindles? I think you need around 73 gm spindles for the proper clearence. Brett
GearMan 06-29-2002, 09:05 PM you have the wrong spindels you need a dana 706528x spindel then it will work you must have drum brake spindels instead of disc brake ones
RustoleumWhite 06-29-2002, 09:48 PM hmmm, I *though* they were disc spindles.... not sure though, I have a stack of spindles (and a stack of GM hub/rotors) so I assumes they were disc....
is the PN stamped on them?? Where?? I've never seen a PN on them, but then I've never actually looked..
I'll check them out tomarow
thanks, any other thoughts??

TONY K 06-29-2002, 10:00 PM Wire brush the side of the spindle for the number and just to be sure, what are the bearing and race numbers on the inner kit. This means you'll have to waste a seal but that might be the problem.
see ya,
tony k
75-86 F150 hub/rotor's 75 waggy spindles, works mint...
RustoleumWhite 06-30-2002, 09:00 AM hmmm.... it apears I have like 4 or 5 different kinds of spindles kicking around (not including some Ford ones)
non of the numbers match up with Gearman's numbers. Does anyone have a way of ID'ing these things??
here are the numbers of the "small" spindles I have...
#1: D 38?27 J2R7 0355A
#2: 36576 H2786
#3: 6D 1828?P6(?)?53?156 C
Then I have one other as well, that I can't find any numbers on.
Any clues? All are physicaly different in some way (I'll try to get a picture later today or tomarow). The "?" are oviously were I couldn't read the number clearly.
thanks for the help

Maine Jeepah 06-30-2002, 09:16 AM FWIW I had a similar problem with small bearing spindles and ford rotors(f150) hittin the inner sheild that is attached to the backing plate.(it was rubbing the backs of the lug studs)
Removeing some material form that sheild appered to solve the problem...and all else appeared OK.
Its got to be a spindle thing.
The boneyard we got mine from had shelves of them...we picked out what appeared to be the right ones...there are so many with such small variances that it is easy to get the wrong ones.
Sorry for the crappy picture.
No #'s on mine that I can find.
MJ
CJ-Jeeper 07-01-2002, 09:49 PM Check dimensions:
with the spindle sitting like the pic above
1) total height should be 6 1/2"
2) flange to end of inner journal should be 1 3/16"

Waggy's use the big-bearing spindles... I don't see how a Ford hub would fit... they need the small-bearing ones...

Some ar ebig some are small. I have a 77 waggy with small spindles.
I am in the middle of the same conversion..... how much space should there be between the brake backing plate and the rotor? is there a minimum clearance?
thx.
so are the ones i sent ya not working?

75 waggy drum brake spindles ;)
'75 Waggy drum brake spindles? A '75 Waggy had discs, not druims. The spindles are the right ones to use though. The big bearing spindles weren't used until mid-77.
