So - -this is my first major build - - I am installing a 79 Ford D60 front and rear in my 01 tj and I am wondering which steering set-up you guys would suggest. I think I am going to stretch the front end about 3 - 4 inches and really don't want to go the high steer route since I am going to try and keep my jeep as low as possible. In my searching I found a couple guys that had the tie rod behind the front axel (is that the way to go - -what is involved in doing that). I dont know if you need to know but I am running 37's with 4.5 in. lift thinking of going to 3.5 springs. Hydro assist maybe in the future but not immediately. Most of my wheeling is 70% trails and 30% rocks. Any Help or pics would be greatly appreciated!
Oh - - and a side note -- I was going to leave the front axel where it was for now and stretch just the rear. I went to order the currie bracket and they were like 400.00 so i thought that I would just go ahead and order polyperformance 3 link and stretch the front too. I know that alot of you guys are running that kit - - how do you like it - - pros/cons..... How big of a bitch was it to install.....

I've had a Dynatrack PR 60 on my '01 TJ for the last 2 years.
I had nothing but problems w/ the steering.
I first tried to use the stock steering (actually Currie HD draglink & a beefy dom tie rod) but never could get full lock to lock. Other hassles.
I next tried the Dynatrac high steer. Never got full lock to lock, wasted off the draglink/pittman arm rod end several times, sheared the trackbar/frame bracket bolt once & had to plate/reinforce the frame trackbar bracket.
Finally realized I'd get full lock to lock w/ a custom pittman arm.
Got sick of the problems & went full hydro & so far, it's a dream. :smokin:
I plan on moving the front axle forward one of these days & it should make things much easier.
It's mostly a trail rig.

Well just my .02..
I run a YJ. Dana 44 with self built 1-ton steering 1-1/4" Tie rod/draglink and high steer using parts from PSC. If u damage that steering setup u need a tank, not a jeep.
Personally i feel that if u are going to stretch it hydro would probably be your best bet. But I feel if u are considering putting the steering behind the axle because you are worried about bending your steering i think its unneccessary as u can build a setup to take a beating. First time i seen my setup walk away unscathed from a hit that would have pretzeled a normal steering setup i was floored. The fact that u spend limited time in the rocks would lead me to believe that a beefier well setup steering would more then likely fit your application perfect.
Umm and also, hi-steer has nothing to do with how high your jeep is...
Hope this helps

I know that steering does not determine the height of your jeep, however I have heard if your trying to stay low that you could have some clearance issues with high steer. I dont know how true that is but that is what i have heard. Thanks for the info - - I wonder how the full hydro steering would be on the street?
