Let's see your pics of your rear shock isetups. I am currently contemplating mounting my shocks outside the frame rails, anyone running a setup like this on Zuk axles??

Why would you want to?

I noticed a commet on ORC that Brent a TT feels the stock shock angles are preferred, so there must be some reasonable arguments to support the notion.

The only thing I don't like about the zuk rear axle/shock mount set up is that the ebrake cable is kinda in the way, also I have been wondering if you put a shock on the outside of the axle and one on the inside if that wouldn't help with axle wrap.
On angles if you push the top mounts to far topward the center you will end up bending the shock as it will absorb movement/impact that way. The closer to straight up and down the better it will absorb the impact.

Here's mine. Pretty standard setup. Didnt have to change anything from my old CJ spring/missing link setup.

I have never seen that. It would be interesting. A vertically mounted shock gives you better dampening, but an inclined shock mounts gives you more travel for a given shock length. If you can find a shock that has enough stroke and works with your suspension when mounted vertically, that is best IMHO.

it doesn't look like LoJones has much room for up travel in his shocks either......

Looks can be deceiving. that 3.5 inches of up travel is plenty for road shock, both wheels going up at the same time. When it comes to articulating 1 wheel will go 8 inches up fully stuffed in the wheel well and still have a bit left on the shock. thats why the shocks are mounted at an angle.

I ran it up on a ramp and set all the shocks in their ideal locations. Ramped over 1000 on a 30degree after everything was complete.

Thats awesome! 1000 on a 30deg. ramp. I had no idea you could stuff the tire that far with so little shock showing. If thats the case I can go with a shock a couple of inches longer cause I have about 4- 5" showing.....

Yea, I downloaded them a long time ago. If you have any advise on the install I'm all ears. Have you given any thought to longer springs? I don't know if you could get more articulation or better performance. I'm always looking for an edge.

tip1: rent/borrow/steal a plasma cutter. they are only about $35 a day from a rental place and will save you days of grinding.

tip2: pray that RROs instructions are better than Mike's :)

tip3: dont start working on or taking apart your rig until you have all the parts sitting on your floor waiting. How many horror stories have you heard of folks thinking its in the mail and they rip their rigs apart only to find out the parts didnt show up.

Feel free to contact me during the install if you have any questions. It took me a few weekends to do it by myself with bad instructions. With help and good instructions you could do it in a day.

Now that you kind folks have addressed the rear, could someone please tell me something about the front?

Is it true that the shocks help to prevent axel wrap?
If so is it lots or not really a big deal?

I have a SPOA front and would like to mount the shocks on the U-bolt plate
in the center facing the wheel and moving the upper mount directly above it.

Will this work?
Sorry no pictures posted, however I could e-mail them to someone if they thought they could help me.

Thank you

I am installing my Shaffer lift now and Lonny's pics have been helpful since I didnt get much instructions either. There are a few differences since I am using Toyota axles, like the front springs mount outside the frame rails. Hopfully you can use the pics as a guide because they are better then the instructions

Axle rap shouldn't really be a problem for the front.........

The pressure washer definately articulates better than the air compressor due to the lower CG and wider skids.

Actually, it does just fine. With the shocks mounted at an angle, you don't use as much (ie, 1" of shock travel for every 2" of suspension travel). Plus, those bumpstops on the shocks compress an additional 1.5"-2". :flipoff2: ~Steve

From what I've seen and heard, those are the Rocky Road 5.5" SPOA perches. The SPOA was on it when I bought the Zuk, so it wasn't my doing. :flipoff2: They worked fine while I had them (got the Toy axles on there now). ~Steve

I mount mine at a 45* in the back like squirelman does.....But i put my shock bodies at the top.....Keeps them away from the rocks....

Plenty of flex that way, it takes 2" of wheel travel to move a shock 1" at 45*......and with 9012's.....It is hard to max those out!

Dude, somebody is pulling your friggin leg! RRO 5.5 spring perches? I don't think so. RRO perches are really beefy. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Well, I don't know what they were honestly. All I know is that they looked like 5.5" SPOA perches, had the tabs that go down to the SPUA perches like the RRO ones, and they worked fine for as long as I had them. They are gone now, though, and got replaced by Warrior perches on my Toyota axles. ~Steve

Rud, how much rub (if any) do you have when you turn your wheels @ full comp?

Hank, I've seen a few rigs with shocks mounted on the outside of the frame rails but never on stock sammie axles. I've seen them on waggy and yota axles though. I talked to Mike Schaffer about this back in May and I think he said it was to help with the stability of the longer axles. Like I said, I think, but it makes sense to me. I don't know if there would be an added benefit to doing it on the stock width axles plus you would need some super long shocks to have any wheel travel. Just my .02!

we mounted psf4x4's shocks outside of the frame when we built his sami. i am not sure if you could do it with a stock setup or not. we moved the wrangler springs under the frame on his zuk and he is using waggy d44's so they are wider. he is using some stiff pro-crap shocks that are the same lengthe as the rancho 9012's. plenty long. the pro-comp 3000's that he is running are long but they are too stiff for a zuk in my opinion.
