My buddy has a '74 CJ5 needing a third member and he has a '79 Scout with a good third member. Since they are both D44's will it be a swap or a no-go part for part ?

A 44 is a 44, no matter what it comes out of, except for the aluminum 44 in Grand Cherokees and maybe the 44 in Rubicons.

Or of course if you have an older 19 spline carrier with the smaller diameter side gears...Which will not fit the larger diameter 30 spline side gears...

Well I know how IH likes to "over build" things so I wondered if maybe the bearing surface of the carrier might be different size. I'm an IH Cub Cadet guy myself ;)

Thanks guys !

That's what I was wondering... :shaking: I took it to mean carrier.

I normally call'em "stumps" but my buddy doesn't know what I'm talking about ... thought I'd try "third" that time :D

I've always thought "center section" was more universal.

35 years ago when I started working in a wrecking yard my boss called them stumps so that's what stuck. To us a stump was the housing containing the R&P and carrier. My buddy calls the "center section" a carrier because that's what he seen on some website. I told him the carrier had the ring gear and spiders on it but carrier stuck for him. We get all confused talking to eachother :shaking:

The more "politically correct" term would be "differential" but I any term will work as long as you are on the same page. As far as the interchangeability of the Scout and Jeep diffs, they would fit (depending on the year of the Jeep) with differences stated above however, bear in mind you can't just simply remove one and stick it in the other axle. Any changes in a diff (ie. bearings, carrier, or gear ratio) require re-shimming of the components for proper backlash and preload. Note these before you tackle a job as you might be creating other issues that would cause axle failure.

Yeah I already know about setting the backlash but what I've not been able to find out anywhere is what to set the pinion bearing pre-load at or how much backlash.

I think he's decided to go with putting the IH D44 up front ... but ya never know :shaking:
