I have this Ford HP Dana 44 front. I need to modify the diff cover that I have on it now as it is a LP version. How far above the axle center line is the fill plug hole supposed to be on HP Dana 44's? Should I make the fill hole an equal amount above the axle center line as it is now below the center line?

i would make it a little bit higher in n order to bathe all the internals of the differential properly. especially if you have cut and turned the knuckles on a front axle.
If you don't want to modify it I think Leonard has brand new Dana front covers for around $20-$25.

That's easy. I might go that route.
