I got a chance to test drive the 84 GMC 3/4T with that 6.2L Diesel.

I have some more ?'s for you :

- Is there a 5 spd that will work with the 6.2L:question:
- Is there an OD unit that will work with it:question:
- What can be done to give more top end so I don't end up road:skull:
- Are there any economical ways or do I tell the seller "fogedaboudit"
- What the 6.2L worth on the market:question:

Reason for my babbling is that it just doesn't seem like it will go over 60-65mph on the freeway. It only has about 1K miles on the rebuild now. It has a 14bolt rear, a good cab, bed, and tool boxes, tires in good shape, tranny/clutch seem okay too. I liked the granny low BUT I am gonna hafta have some better top end without feeling like its at redline(no tach).

PLEASE HELP!!

Sorry, I can't answer all your questions. I have driven many 6.2L powered trucks but they have all been TH400 equipped. Not sure why yours won't go over 65, mine has no problems going faster than that.

Hay Paul I was thinking about geting one in my Scout (6.2 that is) how do you find it going up steep hills on the free way e.g. the Fraser canion road does it hold or does it bog down

thanks

It's pretty wimpy. If you are going to all the trouble of swapping in a diesel you'd probably be better off choosing a different one than a 6.2L.

The 6.2L I have been looking at ISN'T a TH400 like I first thought.:emb3: It turns out that it is a 4 speed manual.:mad3: How hard is it to find a TH400 that will work for it?!? Know anybody who'd want the 4 speed?!?:D

I am beginning to wonder if this truck is really worth it. You made comment that it is "wimpy" going uphill. I need something that can run and gun with a load. It sounds like this ain't the one for me.

any 400 form a truck will bolt up. I'm not sure but you *might* need a difrent flex plat but i dought it. and you might need a difrent vacume modulator, for the shifting i'm sure the 6.2 has difrent vacume readings then a gas engine

When I decided to run an auto between my AMC360 and the Doubler I had to be sure to get an AMC Th400. Wouldn't it be the bellhousing and not the flex plate that would be different?!? I am looking for a bolt in application and NOT have to go to AA or Novak!
Did any of the 6.2L come with an auto tranny?!? Being as old as it is I fear they may have only been made with a manual tranny. I have heard that an NV4500 might work. IF this is true and they aren't outrageously priced then I would be kewl with that. I'd still have a grany low of about 5.62:1 and a 27% o/d 5th gear. BIG:D Agian, I would really like to stay away from any OVERPRICED adapters.

The 6.2 uses the same chevy bolt pattern as a sbc, same engine mounts too. you need a 139 tooth diesel flex plate, the torque converter is set at a different stall too.

i just dumped my th400 for a sm465 behind my 6.2.

if you go through swapping a different diesel into your scout do a 4bt or even a 6bt :) cummins, they have alot more hop up parts for them and they are stronger. you can also get the 4bt with a th400 or sm465 behind it for relatively cheap out of certain chevy P-series vans

The cummins 6bt is just the 5.9 engine used in Dodge rams, Ford F650s, Freightliner FL70s... etc. The 4bt is a 4 cylinder version of the 6bt and was found in some chevy panel vans among others.

here is a link with a bunch of swaps (including ones into Scouts): http://cgi2.x-pointcgi.com/~dieselrepower/ :D

A intercooler is a ATA (air to air) radiator that cools the air coming from the turbo and going to the intake. With out it you lose prefomace big time.

5.9 Cummins were available in dodge 2500 and 3500s from 1989 to present. They are not too cheap though

usually for $1000 you can get a 3.9 4bt Cummins with a TH400 or SM465
