Ok Guys, I know this isn't hardcore tech or anythimg but I have asked elswhere and am still clueless.

I have been having problems with my speedo lately. It would jump all around, sometimes up to 100 and back (to actual speed for a split second) very sporadically which causes my rev limiter to kick in when I am in a low gear accelerating, it just cuts at 3K and is VERY annoying:mad3: . So I tried taking the speedo gear out, and as I was driving down the freeway today, my speedo started jumping around again!! Only now it returns to 0 intead of actual speed, also since there is no speed reading, it dies if I push in the clutch and come to a stop, also very annoying.

SOOOO, do you guys think its the speedo or the VSS? PS if anyone would be kind enough to let me try their VSS around the chandler area I could see if thats the problem or not. TIA (I have never take my Jeep into a shop(except for some fab work) and dont wont to start now!!LOL)

Help Me:D

Whoops, sorry A little info may help:p . Anyway, I drive a 93 Wrangler, 6 Cyl, 5 speed, JB Conversions SYE, 4.56 gears, 35 tooth speedo gear and 37" MT/R's. I have tried all four different positions for the speedo to no avail. Thanks;)

Just drive around with a bloodhoud dog and have him stick his head out the door. 1/2" teeth showing is about 30mph 1.5" is about 50mph. His lips should be flying up at full mast at about 55-60 don't go any faster you could hurt him.:flipoff2: I actually had a similiar prob on mine and a little cleaner on the contacts and it went away sounds like yours is more complicated though.

"I have tried all four different positions for the speedo to no avail." Your speedo sensor should have little numbers on it between the index slots for the "four different positions" these numbers are the range speedo gear that the housing needs to be clocked for, ie: 35-37 means if you've got a 35 tooth, it need to be clocked in that position, 39-41 means you're 41 tooth needs to be in that position. With the higher tooth count gears it shouldn't even tighten down in at least one of the positions. When I swapped in a different speedo gear into my YJ, I did it in the driveway, in the dark, before a long trip, it work fine for almost the whole day, then bounced around, then quit. I checked the clocking and put it in the right spot and it has worked ever since. Yours sounds kinda funny though, maybe the speedo sensor is hosed, or maybe just the nylon gear. They pop out in a minute, swipe one from a friend and try it.

Thanks for getting me in trouble at work, I busted out laughing so hard my boss peeked in to see what was up.

I don't think your rev limiter is linked to your speedo, should only be tachometer, but then my 4Bangler has never been even near 100mph, so who knows, I know 6500rpm, that's when she starts sounding like a Jet ski on some waves.

Yeah, I have it clocked right, I think. Where are the numbers supposed to point? 6 0'clock? I just tried all the other positions out of spite, and it does the same thing with 3 different gears. Im thinking the VSS is hosed.

Thanks

Well, It may not be the rev limiter:flipoff2:, but something is killing the engine when it hits 3K's when the speedo is hooked up :mad2: .

Hmm.........I think you're problem may be a bit more complicated. Any trouble codes? could be and electrical short, been swimming with it lately? What do your other guages do when the speedo freaks? Does the motor cut at 3000 every time, free reving?

No touble codes, never been swimming with it, other guages are perfectly normal, and the motor doesnt cut out at all free revving or in first gear, but 2-5 if I take it up to 3K it cuts out  The numbers on the speedo housing, are supposed to point to 6:00 right:question:

Uhh...I can't remember, and my wrangler is 250 miles away, I'd check my ZJ, but I don't have any tools at work and have no idea what gear is in it. I think it's just supposed to be in between the two prongs on the hold down. I had a little trouble getting it right on mine at first.

Thanks for getting me in trouble at work, I busted out laughing so hard my boss peeked in to see what was up. Sorry dude my dad used to have a dog that would bath me in drool in the backseat. I couldn't help myself. It really works though I used to watch the lips move at the change of the gears.

Hey, I'm still at work (okay, I'm not really working, just playing on the internet) at 8:00pm and I work 250 miles from home and live out of a hotel, what do you expect? If I had a 1/2" I'd go out to the parking lot and take a look, why don't you fax me a wrench and I'll check. Just kiddin', I don't want to break the fax machine.

What part of A: My engine cuts out if its hooked up or B: It stalls when its not, don't you understand? I could give a shit less how fast Im going, but the Jeep sure seems to want to know. Yet anothe useful post by the great MOVEASIDE:rolleyes: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Yeah, but that shit about telling your speed by the dog's lips was hillarious.

Hey, go to a Jeep dealer at night with a 1/2" and swipe a speedo sensor, if that does the trick, buy one, if not, keep looking, either way, put it back when you're done. That reminds me, I need a new radiator overflow cap for my ZJ, time to got test drive some Grand Cherokee's
