My harness from howell did not come with a connection for the oil pressure switch. Do I need this to function properly? the motor starts fine, I have only ran it for a few seconds and then shut it off.

:Edit: Oh yeah, 1990 350 TBI

It would be nice to know what motor! :shaking:

Technically the engine shouldn't run for more than a few seconds with the oil pressure sensor disco'd. The oil pressure sensor is critical and I can't imagine a "purchased" harness NOT having this. Are you sure it's the oil pressure sensor and not the oil pressure gauge? The oil pressure gauge connection is not critical.

All an oil pressure switch is going to do is kill your motor (if you have it wired up right) if oil pressure drops below the switch setting. A good safety, but any monkey should be able to monitor his oil pressure all on his own. IMHO

The 1990 oil pressure switch shuts off the fuel pump when there is no oil pressure. It is not mandtory, I dont believe the computer even knows if it is there. Check a wiring diagram , it would be easy to add if you wanted to.

I believe it's primary purpose is not to save the engine in case of lost oil pressure. Rather, it's a safety feature in case of a roll over. When a vehicle is upside down, it will loose oil pressure and shut the fuel pump off so it does not continue to pump fuel and potentially cause a fire.

ok, so is the consensus that the computer does not even know about the switch? I can function without it and just pay attention to the gauge?

Yes.
