If you look in (for example) the big, hardcover 'Chilton' manual, for late 60's / early 70's light-to-medium trucks, in the I-H section, under front drive axles.

There is a setup there referred to as a 'drive gear type' front axle. After staring at the diagrams, and reading part names, I have a pretty good grasp on what I am looking at, and how it all works.

My question is, has anyone in the I-H world ever seen one of these units? Have any pictures? Or maybe a link to some pictures or information?

Rather than ramble on with more questions at this time, I will wait and see if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks in advance
Dave

Might get a better response here: www.binderbulletin.org Specifically the "Triple Diamond Talk section. Many "big truck" experts there that will share what they know.

Oldihc.org even more full of old crusty guys that know way too much and have forgotten even more :D.

Is it a Gleason Torsen?

Thanks Rustoleum, I will likely have to wander over that way.

Old Scout. Not a diff, but actually a whole front axle setup. Used axle shafts that did not steer, drove a large item referred to as a 'power yoke' which was connected to what is referred to as a 'compensating ring'. Those 2 particular components make up what amounts to a U-joint, except the joint is nearly the same diameter as a brake drum.

Sort of an interesting setup, I just wonder if anyone in the wheeling world is familiar with which particular axle / truck this is used on.

I have seen one on a old 4x4 IH Loadstar firetruck. It is the strangest setup I have ever seen. It was a 1700, no newer than mid sixties.

Thanks for the info, DNL.

It certainly appeared to be that old. But I was wrong about which Chilton manual I was researching while I was on the throne, it was actually the 71-78 truck one.

But that makes sense, since the early-to-mid-60's stuff would be the ones getting fixed at about that time.
