: Samurai won't shift

I've been having more and more trouble with my samurai shifting. Often I can't get it into 2nd. If I drive it a short distance so things don't have time to warm up things are OK, but if I were to drive far I won't be able to get it into 2nd and I'll have difficulty getting it into 1st/3rd. Sometimes I will have to turn the vehicle off at the lights, put it into 1st/2nd and start from there when it is warm!

When this started I adjusted the clutch myself and it seemed great. For a day. Then I adjusted it more and it lasted a day. Then I took it to a garage and they adjusted everything and it was great, for two days. I can't adjust the clutch any further now.

I'm probably going to pull the thing apart to look at the clutch today. I've never done anything like this before, it looks like a PITA according to my Haynes manual...

Am I on the right track with thinking it is the clutch? What could be causing this shifting problem? Anybody else ever had a problem like this?

I have seen this before and it has happened to me. Take a good look at your clutch cable. You will probably find a buldge in it. Best to use 2 people. Depress the clutch and have your helper follow the cable to find the buldge or break, no fixing it, just replace it....

As long as the tranny subject is up I put a new clutch, tb,and pilot bearing in my truck cause the old one was slipping and the tb howled when the truck was in nuetral and clutch not deprssed as soon as you push the clutch in it would stop so I replaced it all, problem is it still does the same sound with the new one in and when Im out on the trail at any kinda speed as the truck bounces you here a rubbing noise coming from the tranny?????????? aint broke I havent fixed it but would like to no what it is.....

I've got the bouncing and rubbing noise going on in my tranny too. I'm saving for a kicker and praying it doesn't bust in the time being. How long has your's been doing it for Rockrat?

hello all
i beleive its the input bearing right at the front of the tranny mine has been noisey for at least three yrs now and it still functions ok so i wouldnt worry about it right away but by the same token i have another tanny laying out in the barn should i ever get off my ever widening fat arse and do something about it{im really lazy in my old age} rabidray

I think it sounds like you need some new bearings and syncros. When your bearings in the tranny start going out different gears become harder to get into.

Mine has the same little howling noise when the clutch is let out, but when you push it in, it goes away...

What exactly needs to be replaced?

Sure enough there is a giant bulge in the clutch cable right in a hard to see place. I probably never would have found it if I wasn't looking for it. I'll be installing a new cable in a couple days as soon as it gets in.

Thanks a lot! You totally saved my weekend from being spent taking my vehicle all apart :)

Glad it was only a clutch cable. It would have been a real bummer had it been the tranny. On the noise issue my buddy replaced his whole clutch everything, disc, flywheel, throw-out and pilot bearings. Still makes that same noise. I did everything on mine except the flywheel same thing here. I think it's a zuki thing!

Have the flywheel reworked. Costs about 10 bucks at the auto parts store. When I replaced my clutch and flywheel I had the flywheel spun as well, it works like a brand new truck now!! Well it needs a shift sheet, but I'm sure RRO will put it in the mail any day now.....

Front input shaft bearing. It will last a long time making the noise, tho ;)
