: My 2 Car Garage Shop
Stephenw 01-05-2008, 03:05 PM Here are some pictures of my shop. It's an oversize 2 car garage. I'll update this thread as I make progress getting set up.

RustyNailJustin 01-05-2008, 03:19 PM Looks like you are getting set up pretty well. I worked out of a 2 car for several years and got a ton of work done. That looks like a good work area.
Joe_88k5 01-05-2008, 03:48 PM I'm in the same boat, oversized attached 2 car that's 22' wide and 32' deep. Looks like a nice organized setup. Where'd you get the small lift from? I've seen those before but never knew were to get one. Are they reasonably priced?

My lift is a Snap-On, so it was very expensive. I've noticed that HF sells something similar...

jpmassey 01-07-2008, 02:53 PM I'm working out of a 20x20. I've got to roll my chassis out to free up space. My advise: Build alot of shelves.
SPEEDCRAVIN 01-08-2008, 07:05 AM Looks great. I wish I would have done more with my garage when i had one living in Dallas. Instead I used a friends shop and the drive back and forth was killing me...
Also looks like you have the large Central Machine drill press from HF. I just bouhgt the biggest one they make and almost have it together. Does the drill chuck jsut press on???
JOSH

The drill press has a Morse taper spindle. The chuck has a Jacobs taper back. A chuck adapter goes into the chuck and then into the spindle, all a press fit. The HF chuck sucks. The scroll mechanism seized on mine after about 6 months use. I replaced the chuck with a genuine Jacobs, which was about $100.
Stephenw 01-14-2008, 04:16 AM Update...
I bought a solid beech counter top from IKEA for $169. It is 96 7/8" x 25 5/8" x 1 1/2" thick. I finished it with tung oil.

The vise is a Wilton multipurpose from Home Depot. Most Wiltons are made in the U.S.A., and are very expensive. Those which are sold by Home Depot are marked "Made in China to Wilton specifications". They have a lifetime guarantee and are also affordable. Most who have broken a vise were using it as a press, with a cheater on the handle. This is misusing it. I have a hydraulic press to use for pressing duties.

Here is a picture of my multipurpose machine under my bench, mostly disassembled. It is both a lathe, and a milling machine. I need to build a table for it.

K2Orion 01-15-2008, 07:26 PM The beech counter looks cool, but why?
Wouldn't a metal top be more appropriate in a shop used for metalwork/fab?
I use a piece of formica counter, but it was free. If I were to spend $169 it would be to build a metal top that I could weld on/to and would be impervious to oil.
I long for a 2 car garage, especially one as clean as yours. I grew up with a 2 car and my last house also had a 2 car. Now I'm trapped in a 1 car but I have at least twice as many tools.
In the first pic what is the thing in between the black roll away tool chest and the wooden cabinet? It looks like a couple propane tanks on a 2 wheel cart with hoses coming out?
TejasYOTA 01-15-2008, 07:53 PM Very nice!
I am having our new home built and it is a three car stacked garage, meaning one bay will allow two cars bumper to bumper. What this does is to allow me to use the furthest bay as a work area. Once built, I plan to get new tool cabinets, shelves and hopfully, get a lift. It will be a done, after the home is decorated - meaning it will be completed sometime late this year or early next.
I like your multi-machining center, who is the maker and cost?
Stephenw 01-15-2008, 08:19 PM The machine next to the toolbox is a Robinair refrigerant machine. One tank is for R-12 and the other for R-134A. I will not weld on the workbench top. I intend to build a separate welding table. If I am doing a messy job, such as a tranny rebuild, I'll do that in a drip tray on top of the workbench. The multipurpose machine is from Harbor Freight (usually goes on sale for around $400). It's not the greatest, but it doesn't take up too much space.
Stephenw 03-11-2008, 07:13 PM Here's a minor update. I installed a 100 amp sub-panel in my garage. I also ran conduit for my welder outlet. The sub-panel will be used for all my garage circuits (outlets, welder, air compressor, lights). You can also see the color scheme I am painting on the wall behind the panel.

Pt_Ranger_V8 03-11-2008, 07:32 PM If you can - get a small storage shed for your 'yard machines'
it free's up a LOT of space for welding fab :smokin:

I have a shed, a really good sized one. I had a foot of snow on the ground (that stayed all winter) which stopped me from organizing and moving stuff out there.
bc35339 03-12-2008, 07:55 PM what will your first project be when you finish up your shop? Looks like its comming along good.

I'm working on my Samurai (daily driver). I need to build bumpers, a cage, skid plates, convert to fuel injection, etc.

100 amps nice! I have 50 amps pulled off the house now and seams to be plenty of power but you have more tools then I do. I don't have an air compressor and my welder is only 120v. But I do have a 240v PTAC.
What is the total amperage on your house?
I didn't pull any permits when rewiring my garage.
Hope that doesn't bite me in the ass later.
FSR BIKER 03-13-2008, 12:17 PM This isn't much more expensive, only requires 9'3" of head room.
